Two novelties characterized Prato’s textile industry during the first months of 2012, which saw new appointments for the heads of the city’s Industrial Union and the Consortium Pratotrade. While the young Andrea Cavicchi appeared on the scene as head of the industrialists, Pratotrade’s change was no less significant: Alessandro Benelli left his post to Sandro Ciardi, another representative of Prato’s green textile sector. It was a quasi natural ‘succession’ between two entrepreneurs with similar experiences and outlooks. Ciardi, 45, is an ex-textile expert who became the leader of enterprises like Ultra and Dinamo. More recently, he’s acted as a consultant for the Master Loom brand, part of the Emmetex Group, where he starting working straight out of school. PCiardi’s a world traveler even as far as fairs are concerned. An attentive observer, he has always scrutinized details within the textile sector, and has found himself at the head of a consortium that is currently emerging from tough times which implied cutting down on personnel, downsizing headquarters and being ultra-careful with costs. The difficult economic situation overall is to blame, as well as cuts to funding once allotted by various institutions, including, first and foremost, the Region. What does the Pratotrade you inherited look like? Benelli’s work was challenging during this difficult moment but he proved skillful when it came to handling the problems at hand. Pratotrade continues to be a consortium with fifty registered members including all of the district’s most representative companies and entrepreneurs which are Prato’s greatest asset. What are the first steps to take? It’s not that we have few members, but they do need to be increased. In order to achieve this goal, new opportunities for development have to be created. We’ve got to provide new services and strengthen those created in the past. Direct internationalization is one of our main issues. We plan to participate in various missions abroad, organizing several workshops in emerging countries. We’re looking to adopt a formula featuring five to ten companies and host meetings targeted toward the most important economic realities of China, Brazil and Russia, to name a few. It’s fundamental to have select targets. And then, we’ve got the fairs to consider… Speaking of fairs…Prima was not exactly a success. We’re in a stop-and-go phase, in the sense that the fair started off really well, thanks in part to its synergy with Pitti Filati. Then, the two dates became difficult for exhibitors, or one of them at least. In fact, the July schedule was perfect, with collection presentation planned two months in advance in respect to Milano Unica and Première Vision. It was the one in February that proved too close to Milan and Paris.
