significant interest in machinery, which, in the end, did not entirely pan out because by the time it was time place orders, the
market had already entered into its curbed phase which is not yet over.
In such a critical situation, the data presented on Pitti Immagine Uomo’s inauguration day by the Edison Foundation’s Marco
Fortis is positive because it provides evidence that our productive system remains vital. But, above all, these estimates are good
news because they originated from third parties, which are therefore impartial. The Trade Performance Index compiled by
WTO and UNCTAD in 2010, suggests that despite the growing competitiveness of emerging countries within the lowest added
value bracket, Italy remained the world’s most competitive country in three sectors: textiles, clothing and hide-leather-footwear.
It’s in second place in the non-electronic mechanics sector, featuring basic manufactured products and diverse manufactured
goods.
Italy is only in sixth place when it comes to the food products sector and this reality is, perhaps, is a negative surprise.
Considering the competitiveness of the foreign market in general, which has extended to all commodity sectors for G20
countries, we should consider that, in 2010, Italian ranked second after Germany, which clinched first place in eight commodity
sectors out of the 14 economic macro-sectors considered in the Trade Performance Index (which includes transport vehicles,
non-electronic mechanics, chemical products and electronic components).
China ranks third followed by France and Japan. As confirmation that the fashion clothing sector has not become overly ripe
and fallen from the tree, Edison supplied data regarding the generation of added value within this ‘expanded’ sector, which has
prodotti chimici, componenti elettronici).
