L’immagine tradizionale di visitatori stranieri che si aggirano tra le
rovine classiche o i monumenti d’arte italiani con un libro che parla di essi tra
le mani che si tramanda sino ai giorni nostri, viene efficacemente evidenziata
da Adlous Huxley, nel suo Along the Road del 1925 in cui in una celebrazione
appassionata dei Old guide-books, osserva:
so out of date as to be historical documents, make excellent traveling companions
[…] It is delightful to read on the spot the impressions and opinions of tourists who visited a
place a hundred years ago, in the vehicles and with the aesthetic prejudices of the period […]
They are morally wholesome reading too […] for they make one realize the entirely accidental
character of all our tastes and our fundamental intellectual beliefs 14 .
Un’immagine questa che porta spesso altri viaggiatori stranieri a ridicolizzare
il tipico English traveller abroad che «walk everywhere with
Murray’s Guide in hand and with open mouth, through galleries and temples,
swallowing everything they hear from the most stupid Cicerone» 15 .Gli old
guide-books di cui parla Huxley che costituiscono insostituibili ed eccellenti
«traveling companions», vengono più spesso affiancati dai componimenti poetici
o da romanzi scritti sul nostro paese che molti viaggiatori citano allorché
si trovano al cospetto di un’opera artistica o di spettacoli naturali. È questo il
caso di coloro che transitando per l’Umbria si soffermano a descrivere la
grande attrattiva naturale che la regione offre della cascata delle Marmore, at-
