Aperto nel 1990 il Museo è
stato voluto a giusta testimonianza
della storia della seta
a Como, segnale tangibile di
una continuità fra passato e
presente di una industria che
mantiene il primato rispetto
al mondo intero. Si estende su
una superficie di ca. 900 mq
ed è situato nello stesso stabile
della scuola tessile di Setificio.
Nell’atrio si è ricreato l’ingresso
di una fabbrica, esponendo
preziosi orologi timbracartellino.
Nella sala centrale, dopo un accenno all’allevamento
del baco e alla trattura, si possono ammirare strumenti
di preparazione alla tessitura: macchine per la fabbricazione
di licci in cotone e di pettini, foracartoni,
duplicatrice, orditoio a sezione.
Un interessante piantello a pancia in fuori del 1870
con 288 fusi testimonia la fase della torcitura.
Nella sala tessitura campeggiano due telai a mano,
uno jacquard e uno a doppia ratiera con lettura del
disegno ad assicelle, un orditoio per cimosse ed un
lisage dell’Ottocento; la presentazione si conclude con
il telaio meccanico Omita del 1922.
Successivamente si entra nella sala controlli e misure
che presenta un’interessante collezione di apparecchi:
dinamometri, torcimetri, bilance di precisione, aspatrice
e provinatrice.
Quindi si passa al laboratorio chimico,
fedelmente ricostruito con
mobili e strumenti d’epoca.
Si accede poi al locale dedicato
alla tintoria dove trovano spazio
una barca per tingere i tessuti,
una pirola in rame per i filati, vari
attrezzi ed un cavigliatoio.
Nella stamperia si incontrano la
cucina colori, il doppio fondo, utilizzato
per cuocere gli addensanti
e miscelare i coloranti; un tavolo
da stampa a tampone con una vasta
collezione di planches in legno
e metallo; un tavolo da stampa a
mano con quadri, lucidi d’epoca
e attrezzi per la fotoincisione. La
stampa a cilindri è rappresentata
da particolari macchine per campionature,
da cilindri in legno e
in rame finemente incisi. Un’ala è
riservata ai modellini di macchine
per stampa a quadri e rotativa.

L’ultima sala è dedicata alle operazioni di finissaggio
dei tessuti: di grande interesse un’antica macchina lignea
per la realizzazione dell’effetto moiré su seta, una
plissettatrice e un imponente palmer del 1932.
The Silk Museum opened in
1990 to present, while there
was still the opportunity, a
true account of the history of
the silk industry in Como. It
is a tangible sign of the continuity,
from past to present,
of an industry that operates
an absolute world-wide monopoly.
The Museum covers
an area of about 900 square metres and is located
in the same building as the textile school, the
Setificio.
The Approach to the Museum is reminiscent of
the entrance to a factory, with
an evocative collection of works’
time-clocks.
In the Main Hall, reference is made
to the art of silkworm breeding.
Also on display are machines that
were used during the stages preceding
weaving. They were variously
employed. One knitted the
cotton heddles, through which the
warp is passed in the loom. The
next made the punched cards for
Jacquard patterns. Another made
sectional warps.
An interesting piantello, a double
deck twister used from 1870s, with 288 bobbins,
facilitates the twisting phase.
In the Weaving Room we can see two hand-looms.
One is for Jacquard method of weaving. Here the
instructions, for the figuring of the silk as it is
woven, were given by means of punched cards.
The other is a
doppia ratiera,
which reads the
design through
the use of wooden
pegs. There
is also a warper
for making the
selvage, which is
the edge of the
fabric, and an
18th Century rope lisage that made piped edges.
The presentation ends with the 1922 mechanical
loom from Omita.
We enter another room dedicated to the control and
measurement of yarns and fabrics. Here we are presented
with an interesting array of fine instruments:
dynamometers, twist counters and balances.
Then we come to the real heart of dye-printing, the
Chemical Laboratory, faithfully reconstructed using
original furniture.
When we enter the Dyeing Room we see a dye vat for
fabrics, a copper kettle for yarns and a number of
tools, including one precious dowel.
In the Printing Room we meet with the doppio fondo,
the Colour Kitchen. This was used to blend the dyestuff
for thickening and to cook them. We can also
see a printing table with a wide selection of wooden
and metal printing blocks and a hand printing table
with screens, transparent foils and engraving tools.
Roller printing is represented by machines for making
samples and by engraved rollers in chromed
copper. A further section is reserved for the display of
models of small mechanized machines for flat printing
and for roller printing.
The last room is devoted to the special finishing of
textiles. Of particular interest is a pleating machine,
an old wooden machine which created the moiré effect
on silk, and the important 1932 palmer.
