Due case lassù, prima del bosco

Come due ragazzi. Camminavano in quell’angolo ampio e silenzioso,
oltre le contrade verso nord, con Asiago alle spalle.
Come due ragazzi. È il grande Ermanno Olmi che racconta: «Ho
raccolto un sasso e l’ho lanciato alto, dove fi niva il prato, dicendo
che se avessi costruito una casa l’avrei voluta lassù. Mario imitò il
mio gesto e il suo lancio raggiunse il bosco appena più a sinistra».
Ora, a separare le case di Ermanno Olmi e Mario Rigoni Stern ci
sono due grandi larici. E dietro, la misteriosa armonia del bosco.
Scrive Mario Rigoni Stern in Arboreto salvatico, del 1991:
«Quando trentadue anni fa venni ad abitare questa casa che mi
ero costruito, il luogo era selvaggio e incolto: i cespugli di crespino,
rosa canina e ginepro avevano invaso i sassosi seminativi
che nel lontano passato gli abitanti della contrada vicina avevano
roncato per poter raccogliere un po’ di orzo e di patate».
[…] «Un giorno, era la primavera del 1989, mi venne da scrivere
del peccio che nei nostri boschi è l’albero più comune; via via
seguirono descrizioni di altri alberi, un po’ scientifi che un po’
letterarie. Naturalmente l’attenzione maggiore era dedicata agli
alberi che mi stavano più vicini, come un rustico arboreto».
E subito una frase del tanto amato Cechov, il compagno delle intense
letture giovanili: «Chi conosce la scienza sente che un pezzo
di musica e un albero hanno qualcosa in comune, che l’uno e
l’altro sono creati da leggi egualmente logiche e semplici».
Arboreto salvatico: un Preludio e venti Sonate, venti Ballate,
venti poetiche descrizioni che il divino Bach chiamerebbe Sinfonie.
Di alcune si raccolgono qui, di seguito, le manifestazioni
tematiche, i passaggi armoniosi, gli incipit.
«Prossimi alla mia casa sono due larici, me li vedo davanti agli
occhi ogni mattino e con loro seguo le stagioni.»
«Anche nel mio brolo, assieme ad altre diverse specie d’alberi di
alto fusto, ci sono i pecci.»

Like two boys. Th ey walked in that spacious, silent spot, northward,
beyond the clusters of houses, with Asiago at their backs. Like two
boys. It is the great Ermanno Olmi who recounts: “I picked up a
stone and tossed it up high, where the meadow ended, saying that if I
were to build a house I would have wanted it up there. Mario copied
my gesture and his landed in the woods, just a bit to the left ”.
Today, separating the houses of Ermanno Olmi and Mario Rigoni
Stern are two great larch trees. And behind is the mysterious harmony
of the woods.
Mario Rigoni Stern writes in Arboreto salvatico, from 1991: “When
I came here thirty-two years ago to live in the house that I had built,
the area was wild and unkempt: the barberry, rose hip, and juniper
bushes had invaded the rock-fi lled meadows that the inhabitants of
the nearby district had cleared in the distant past in order to gather a
bit of barley and some potatoes”. […] “One day, it was in the spring
of 1989, I decided to write about the red fi r, that is the most common
tree in our woods; by and by, descriptions of the other trees followed,
a bit scientifi c and a bit literary, and naturally I gave the most attention
to the trees that were nearest me, like a rustic arboretum”.
And right away, a phrase from his beloved Chekov, the companion
of his intense, youthful readings: “He who knows science feels that a
piece of music and a tree have something in common, that both are
created by equally logical and simple laws”.
Arboreto salvatico: a Prelude and twenty Sonnets, twenty Ballads,
twenty poetic descriptions that the divine Bach would call Symphonies.
Gathered here, below, are the themes of some, the harmonious
passages, the incipits.
“Near my house are two larches; I see them before my eyes every
morning and with them I follow the seasons”.
“In my orchard, along with other varied species of tall trees, there are
