Tredici estati, dal 1990 al 2003, ha trascorso Timothy Treadwell sulle montagne
dell’Alaska, convivendo con grandi orsi grizzly, prima di essere ucciso,
sbranato e divorato da uno di essi. Negli ultimi tre anni di questa convivenza,
l’esploratore porta con sé una telecamera con la quale realizzò 100 ore
di riprese. Treadwell non fi lma soltanto gli orsi, a ciascuno dei quali dà un
nome, ma si mette in prima persona davanti alla telecamera a raccontare di
sé, della sua ossessione di proteggere dai bracconieri questi animali, del suo
rapporto con loro, con la Natura e con il mondo. Treadwell si convince di
essere diventato amico di questi orsi, se non addirittura di essere uno di loro,
o come loro. Nel 2003 è proprio uno di questi amici orsi a sbranare lui e la
sua compagna, Amie Huguenard, che è al suo fi anco durante quella estate.
Solo il microfono della telecamera è testimone di questa tragedia annunciata.
La voce di Werner Herzog, che accompagna tutto il fi lm, sottolinea questo
straziante epilogo sonoro. Il regista in prima persona commenta la morte
di Treadwell come aveva commentato la sua vita con gli orsi e la sua visione
della Natura che è soltanto «caos, confl itto e morte».
Timothy Treadwell spent thirteen summers, from 1990 to 2003, in the Alaskan
mountains living with grizzly bears until he was killed, torn apart, and
devoured by one of them. In the fi nal three years of this coexistence, Treadwell
took a video camera with him and shot some 100 hours of footage. He not only
fi lmed the bears, but also sat in front of the camera and told his own story: his
obsession with protecting these creatures from poachers, his relationship with
them, with Nature, and with the world. Treadwell was convinced that he had
become the bears’ friend, if not one of them, or like them. In 2003, one of these
friends savaged him and his companion, Amie Huguenard, who was with him
that summer. Only the microphone of the video camera was witness to this
foreseeable tragedy. Th e voice of Werner Herzog narrates the entire fi lm and
provides a commentary for this heartbreaking audio epilogue, and the death
of Treadwell, as he had commentated his life with the bears and his vision of
Nature as only “chaos, confl ict, and death”.

Werner Herzog è nato a Monaco nel 1942 con il
nome di Werner Stipetic´, è cresciuto con la madre
in un piccolo villaggio delle montagne della
Baviera, ha trascorso la sua infanzia senza vedere
un solo fi lm, ha iniziato a 14 anni a viaggiare
da solo e a piedi, ha lavorato come saldatore
in una fabbrica di acciaio, ha studiato Storia,
Letteratura e Teatro e a 19 anni ha girato il suo
primo fi lm. Da allora ha scritto e diretto più di
50 fi lm e documentari che lo pongono tra i più
grandi registi viventi.
Werner Herzog was born Werner Stipetic´ in
Munich in 1942, and grew up with his mother
in a small village in the Bavarian mountains. He
did not see a single fi lm during his childhood,
but began travelling — alone and on foot — at
the age of fourteen, and worked as a welder in
a steel factory, studied history, literature, and
theatre before making his fi rst fi lm at nineteen.
Since that time he has written and directed
more than fi fty fi lms and documentaries that
place him amongst the most important living
directors.
