Ivan ha perso il suo cava llo. Va a cercarlo nelle fattorie dei villaggi vicini, e
scherza con gli amici: «Sarebbe meglio se invece del cavallo trovassi una moglie…».
Sembra uno scherzo e invece ecco Marychka, vedova da poco, pronta
a cominciare una nuova vita. Prima di decidere, Ivan la invita a vedere la
sua fattoria, dove Marychka dovrà lavorare, perché è questo che lui cerca,
oltre che una compagna: un’aiutante per il duro lavoro nella fattoria. Marychka
accetta e si trasferisce a vivere con Ivan e con l’anziana e cieca madre di
lui nella piccola casa di pietra, immersa nel verde e selvaggio paesaggio dei
Carpazi, dove il ritmo della vita è scandito dal lavoro e dalle antiche tradizioni
degli antenati.
Ivan has lost his horse. He goes looking for it in the farms of the nearby villages,
and jokes with his friends: “It would be better if instead of the horse, I
found a wife…”. It seems like a joke, yet there is Marychka, recently widowed
and ready to begin a new life. Before deciding, Ivan invites her to visit his
farm where she must work, because it is this he is looking for, in addition to
a companion: a helper for the hard work on the farm. Marychka accepts and
moves in with Ivan and with his elderly, blind mother in the little stone house,
immersed in the green and wild landscape of the Carpazi, where the rhythm of
life is marked by work and the ancestors’ ancient traditions.
