Costica si prende cura dei suoi tre bambini nel piccolo villaggio di Acui,
nella Repubblica Moldava. Sua moglie è partita più di tre anni fa per l’Italia
in cerca di lavoro e da allora non è più ritornata a casa. Per un uomo come
Costica è diffi cile crescere tre fi gli da solo e allo stesso tempo mandare avanti
il lavoro nei campi. La sua non è l’unica famiglia in questa situazione. Circa
la metà della popolazione di questo paese vive la lontananza di un familiare,
emigrato in Europa occidentale per cercare lavoro. Questo documentario,
che mescola narrazione e fi nzione, crea una sorta di palcoscenico dove i
personaggi interpretano sé stessi e ci porta a conoscere un versante poco
raccontato dell’emigrazione di questi decenni, quello di coloro che restano
a casa.
Costica cares for his three children in Acui, a small village in Moldavia. His
wife left for Italy three years ago in search of work and has not returned home
since. For a man like Costica, it is diffi cult to raise three children alone and at
the same time run his farm. His is not the only family in this situation. Nearly
half of the population of this country has a relative who lives far away, who
has emigrated to western Europe in search of a job. Th is documentary, that
mixes narration and fi ction, creates a kind of stage on which the personages
interpret themselves and show us a facet of this recent wave of emigration that
is rarely recounted, that of those who remain at home.
Thomas Ciulei
Nato a Bucarest nel 1965, nel 1979 si è trasferito
negli Stati Uniti, dove ha studiato Fotografi a alla
School of Visual Arts di New York. Successivamente
si è specializzato in fi lm documentari alla
Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film di Monaco
di Baviera dove in seguito è stato anche insegnante.
Prosegue la sua attività di regista e di
produttore di documentari.
Born in Bucarest in 1965, in 1979 he moved
to the U.S. where he studied photography at
the School of Visual Arts in New York. Subsequently,
he specialized in documentary fi lm at
the Münich Film School where he later became
a teacher. He now works as a director and producer
of documentaries.
