Il lavoro negli alpeggi di alta montagna signifi cava, per gli abitanti delle Alpi,
guadagnarsi il pane per vivere. Ecco perché lassù non erano soltanto gli
adulti a lavorare, come pastori e come casari, ma anche i bambini, come aiuto
pastori e addetti ai maiali. La vita all’alpeggio è stata spesso celebrata dalla
poesia e dalla letteratura romantica, ma molti bambini vissero queste estati
in malga come niente da celebrare, anzi, ne conservano un ricordo terribile.
La fatica, il freddo, la paura del buio e dei violenti temporali, l’immensa solitudine
e la nostalgia di casa sono alcuni dei ricordi che i giovani pastori si
sono portati dentro per tutta la vita. Ma non erano soltanto le insidie della
natura a rendere diffi cile la vita di questi bambini bensì anche quelle degli
uomini. Sono molte le storie di violenze subite dai bambini da parte dei pastori.
Violenze sempre taciute per non rischiare di essere puniti in modo ancora
più feroce. Negli occhi terrorizzati e tristi delle fotografi e che ritraggono
questi piccoli pastori lassù c’è la verità su un aspetto della vita in montagna
fi nora ignorato e fi nalmente raccontato da questo documentario.
For the inhabitants of the Alps, work in the high mountain pastures signifi ed
earning their daily bread. Th at is why, up there, not only adults worked as
shepherds and cheese makers, but also children, as shepherd’s helpers or pig
tenders. Life in the Alpine meadows has oft en been celebrated in poetry and
romantic literature, but many children experienced these summers in the
shepherd’s temporary huts as anything but a celebration. On the contrary,
they retain terrible memories. Th e fatique, the cold, the fear of the dark and
violent thunderstorms, as well as terrible loneliness and homesickness are
some of the recollections that these young shepherds kept inside for their entire
lives. But not only the pitfalls of nature made these children’s lives so trying:
adults contributed to their misery as well. Many are the stories of violence
infl icted on children by shepherds. And these transgressions were always kept
secret by the children, who feared repercussions if they spoke up. Th e terrifi ed,
sad expressions recorded in photographs of these little workers reveal the truth
about one aspect of mountain life until now ignored and, fi nally, recounted in
this documentary.
Gion Tschuor
Nato nel 1947 a Surselva, in Svizzera, dopo gli
studi magistrali e quelli musicali in direzione e
composizione ha insegnato per anni nel suo paese
nelle scuole primarie e secondarie. Dal 1989
è redattore e autore della Televisiun Rumatscha
di Cuira, per la quale ha realizzato decine di fi lm
documentari.
Born in 1947 in Surselva, Switzerland, after
studying pedagogy and musical composition,
Tschuor taught primary and secondary school
for many years in his home town. Since 1989 he
has worked as an editor and author for Televisiun
Rumatscha of Cuira, where he has realized
dozens of documentary fi lms.
