Gli abitanti del villaggio georgiano Pankisi Gorge sono convinti che tutte le
questioni importanti della vita e della morte debbano essere risolte attraverso
la mediazione di un’autorità. Altzaney è un’ormai anziana signora. È lei,
in paese, a svolgere questo ruolo. A lei è consentito entrare nelle vite degli
altri, prendersene cura e assumersene la responsabilità. Il suo dovere è quello
di risolvere le controversie, di appianare i confl itti e soprattutto di farsi mediatrice
tra i due mondi, quello dei vivi e quello dei morti. Altzaney è infatti
l’unica persona a cui è affi data la cura dei defunti. Ma cos’è che rende questa
gracile e sorridente signora così autorevole e così rispettata in un ambiente
ancora fortemente maschile e patriarcale? E qual è il prezzo che lei deve pagare?
Th e inhabitants of the Georgian village Pankisi Gorge are convinced that all
important questions about life and death must be resolved through the mediation
of an authority. Altzaney is an elderly woman, and it is she who fulfi lls
this role in the town. She is allowed to enter into the lives of others, to look
aft er them, and to take on responsibility for them. Her obligation is to resolve
controversies, calm confl icts, and above all to mediate between two worlds,
that of the living and that of the dead. In fact, Altzaney is the only person entrusted
to care for the dead. But what is it that makes this graceful and smiling
woman such an authority and so highly respected in a strongly male-dominated,
patriarchal society? And what is the price she must pay?
Nino Orjonikidze, Vano Arsenishvili
Nino Orjonikidze, dopo la laurea in Giornalismo
a Tbilisi e a Londra, ha iniziato a lavorare come
reporter per una televisione georgiana. Dal
2004 ha iniziato la sua attività di produttrice e
di regista di documentari. Vano Arsenishvili
ha studiato Regia alla Tbilisi University of Film
and Theatre e alla Film Academy di Vienna e
ha lavorato come regista di cortometraggi e
di documentari indipendenti e per emittenti
televisive. Insieme hanno fondato, nel 2008, la
compagnia di produzione di documentari Artefact
Production, dirigendo insieme numerosi
documentari.
Nino Orjonikidze, after earning degrees in journalism
in Tbilisi and London, began working as
a reporter for Georgian television. In 2004, she
began her activity as a producer and director
of documentaries. Vano Arsenishvili studied directing
at the University of Film and Theatre and
at the Film Academy in Vienna and has worked
as a director of short fi lms and independent
documentaries, as well as for television. In 2008
they founded the documentary company Artefact
Production, where they have co-directed
numerous documentaries.
