Kenrap ha 8 anni, vive e studia nel monastero di Phuktal a 4000
metri, nel cuore dello Zanskar. In uno sperduto villaggio della
Romania vive una sola ragazza, Elena, e decine di giovani uomini
che non riescono a trovare moglie. A Ushguli, in Georgia,
uno dei luoghi abitati più alti d’Europa, per la prima volta nella
loro vita gli abitanti hanno potuto assistere a una proiezione cinematografi
ca su uno schermo piantato sul prato in mezzo alla
valle. Sempre in Georgia, a Panikisi Gorge, l’anziana Altzaney è
incaricata a mediare negli aff ari della vita e in quelli della morte.
Nella Valle Ellero un gruppo di amici è tornato a tagliare e trasportare
la legna a valle alla maniera dei vecchi boscaioli. Sonia
studia all’università e fa l’alpigiana. Pier ha 15 anni e da quando
è nato trascorre l’estate all’alpeggio. Costica tira avanti la famiglia
in Romania mentre la moglie è emigrata in cerca di lavoro
in Italia. Santina vive in una casa senza elettricità e coltiva il suo
orto. Isamil aspetta la neve per poter guadagnare qualcosa per
vivere. Dolma aspetta il grande freddo perché il marito Stanzin
possa percorrere il fi ume ghiacciato.
Ecco. Sono loro i protagonisti del XVI Film Festival della Lessinia.
E molti altri ce ne sono in questa selezione internazionale
di 55 fi lm provenienti da 22 paesi di tutti i continenti. Alcuni di
questi montanari riusciranno a venire a Bosco Chiesanuova e il
“tappeto rosso” del Festival sarà tutto per loro. Altri nemmeno
sapranno che le loro storie sono viste in un luogo tanto lontano
dalle loro montagne, in un posto chiamato Lessinia che non
avranno mai sentito nominare. Ci saranno i registi a raccontarle,
queste storie, a Bosco Chiesanuova, dopo essere andati a
raccoglierle in luoghi lontani, cercando i soggetti da raccontare,
aff rontando viaggi e imprevisti, imparando la lingua di quelle
terre, confrontandosi con mentalità diverse.
La montagna sta cambiando, lo dicono questi fi lm che sono lo
specchio di quanto accade oggi sulle terre alte. Un’emigrazione
al contrario sta riportando gente ad abitare le Alpi, dopo che
queste montagne si erano spopolate, mentre dal Caucaso, dagli

Kenrap is eight years old and lives and studies in the monastery
of Phuktal at 4000 metres, in the heart of Zanskar. In a remote
village in Romania live only one young woman, Elena, and a
few dozen young men who cannot fi nd wives. Th e inhabitants
of Ushguli, in Georgia, one of the most elevated inhabited areas
in Europe, for the fi rst time were able to watch a fi lm, projected
onto a giant screen in a meadow in the middle of the valley.
Again in Georgia, in Panikisi Gorge, the elderly Altzaney is
charged with mediating in the aff airs of life and death. In the Ellero
valley, a group of friends has returned to cut and transport
wood to the lower valley using the methods of the old woodsmen.
Sonia studies at the university and works summers in the mountains
making cheese. Pier is fi ft een and since he was born has
spent his summers looking aft er cows and goats in a high mountain
pasture. Costica holds the family together in Romania, while
his wife has emigrated to Italy in search of work. Santina lives
in a house without electricity and cultivates her garden. Little
Isamil waits for the snow so that he can earn some money to live
on. Dolma waits for the great cold so that her husband, Stanzin,
can cross the frozen river.
Here they are, the protagonists of the 16th Film Festival della Lessinia.
And there are many others in this international selection of
55 fi lms from 22 countries representing all of the continents. Some
of these mountain folks will join us in Bosco Chiesanuova and
the Festival’s “red carpet” will be laid out for them. Others won’t
even know that their stories are being seen in a place far from
their mountains called the Lessinia, whose name they have never
heard. Th ere will be fi lm directors present to tell these stories in
Bosco Chiesanuova, aft er having gone afar to gather them, in
search of subjects to recount, facing long voyages and unexpected
turns, learning the languages of those places, coping with diff erent
mentalities.
Th e mountains are changing; these fi lms that are the mirror of
what is happening in the highest lands tell us that. A counter-
