Ormai è chiaro che tutto ciò che
potrà trasformarsi in un processo
digitale, lo diventerà.
Ancor prima di aprire i battenti, nella
giornata che precede il primo giorno di
manifestazione, come da tradizione, i big
player dell’industria della stampa presentano
in anteprima ai giornalisti provenienti
da tutto il mondo le loro novità.
Nelle conferenze di tutte le aziende alle
quali abbiamo preso parte, siano essere
di prestampa, stampa, processi di finishing,
è emersa forte e chiara la tendenza
di un settore che volente o no lente

While we are writing this article, Drupa is
still taking place, but the scheduling of our
magazine issues leads us to take stock of
the situation and to report what we have
seen and what has emerged during the
first days of exhibition. We cannot but
highlight the nano-technological novelties
by Landa, the real catalyst of Drupa 2012
Now everybody is aware of the fact that
what can be converted into a digital
process, it will become.
As usual, on the day before the opening of the
exhibition, the big players of the printing industry
show the journalists coming from all
over the world a preview of their novelties.
All the company meetings, we took part in,
both those belonging to the prepress, printing
and finishing segments, clearly highlighted a
tendency towards digital technologies which

è costretto a fare i conti con le tecnologie
digitali, per poter sfruttare le potenzialità
offerte da opportunità come il
settore del packaging, uno dei pochi ad
avere andamenti positivi, verso il quale
tutte le aziende puntano il proprio
obiettivo per garantirsi dei margini di
crescita ormai impensabili in altri comparti
come l’editoria o la stampa commerciale.
Se dovessi riassumere in quattro parole
Drupa 2012 non avrei dubbi: Landa, digitale,
packaging, collaborazioni strategiche.
the printing sector, like it or not, has to face.
Today digital printing is a must for those who
want to exploit the potentials of the packaging
compartment which is one of the few
still showing a positive trend.
Most companies are interested in this sector
in order to secure themselves higher margins
of profit which other compartments, such as
publishing or commercial printing, could ne -
ver ensure. If I should summarize Drupa 2012
in four words, I wouldn’t have any doubts in
choosing them: Landa - digital printing -
packa ging - strategic partnerships.

Quest’anno a a sparigliare il mazzo ci ha
pensato Benny Landa, i cui rumors era -
no sempre più pressanti all’avvicinarsi
dell’apertura di Drupa, che ha presentato
le sue macchine da stampa “nanografiche”
a foglio e bobina per l’industria
della stampa editoriale, commerciale e
imballaggio.
Una presentazione assolutamente spettacolare,
davanti a una folla di giornalisti
incredibile, così come lo stand al pad
9 di oltre 1400 metri quadri, senz’altro
uno dei più visitati di tutta la fiera.
Chiariamo subito un aspetto: non siamo
daccordo con chi sostiene che si tratti
solamente di una strategia di marketing
ben ideata dall’inventore della stampa
digitale Indigo. Mettere in campo una
presentazione spettacolare e una presenza
imponente può essere senz’altro
visto come un tentativo di ammaliare
con effetti speciali, annunciare però ac-

While the opening of Drupa was approaching,
rumours were quickly spreading about
which machines this company would pre sent,
above all, about their sheet-fed and web
“nanographics” presses for the publi shing,
commercial and packaging printing industry.
The presentation was rally spectacular ta -
king place in front of an incredible crowd
of journalists, and also the stand covering
over 1,400 m2 in Hall 9 was equally impressive
and, no doubts, one of the most atten -
ded in the whole exhibition.
But, first of all, we would like to clarify one
thing: we don’t agree with those who say
that it was only a strategy well-conceived
by Indigo, the inventor of digital printing.
The organisation of such a spectacular pre -
sentation and imposing presence might be
regarded as an attempt to bewitch with

quasi catapultati su un’altra realtà.
Voglia di sedurre il mercato? Senz’altro
con quel pannello touch-screen a comandare
le macchine di Landa che ricorda,
anzi è un iphone gigante.
L’intento è chiaro: rendere familiare un
ambiente a operatori o imprenditori
che non hanno mai affrontato l’esperienza
digitale, con la quale prima o poi
dovranno imbattersi.
Nonostante le macchine della Landa Corporation
facciano bella mostra di se nell’anfiteatro
all’interno del mega-stand, e
sullo stand stesso, e siano anche in funzione,
dovrà passare almeno ancora un
paio di anni affinché siano pronte per il lancio
sul mercato. Intanto però la linea è stata
tracciata, e tutti sono stati quasi costretti a
farci i conti fin da subito. Siamo quasi certi
che dopo il cappello posto sopra queste tecnologie
da parte di aziende di stampa offset
come Heidelberg, ManRoland e Komori,
non mancheranno altri annunci di partnership
di aziende costruttrici di macchine
a bobina, interessate all’evoluzione

special effects.
On the other hand, however, the announcement
of partnership agreements with manufacturers,
such as Heidelberg, ManRoland,
Sheetfed and Komori, made by Landa toge -
ther with these three companies during the
first days of exhibition, is an important sign
which enables us to realize that there might
be something more concrete behind the
first impact leaving us speechless and almost
catapulting us into another reality.
Do they want to captivate the market? No
doubt, they do, if we think of the touch-screen
panel controlling Landa machines which
evokes, or better really is, a huge iphone.
The goal is clear: they are going to enable the
operators or entrepreneurs who have never
approached digital printing to get used to it
considering that, sooner or later, they will
have to undertake it.

di Landa sono presenti tre macchine a bobina
per la stampa di imballaggi flessibili in
diverse bande e spessori.
Eravamo presenti anche noi alla presentazione
di Landa, e tralasciando l’aspetto
delle macchine, che affronteremo nel
prossimo numero, il luglio-agosto, sul
quale pubblicheremo uno speciale post-
Drupa, Mr. Benny Landa ha confermato
che la nanotecnologia non andrà a sostituire
la stampa offset, ma potrà integrarsi
tranquillamente con essa, visto che
la offset sarà più competitiva per le
medie e lunghe tirature e la tecnologia digitale
troverà spazio invece sui lavori
brevi, a tutto vantaggio della clientela che
potrà avere un ampio ventaglio di scelte

In the meantime, however, the line has been
drawn and everybody has been forced to face

We are sure that, once offset companies such
as Heidelberg, ManRoland and Komori have
embraced these technologies, other partnerships
will be signed among companies manufacturing
reel-fed machines that will be
in terested in the evolution of nano-technology
applied to the printing world. As a matter of
fact Landa equipment range includes three
reel-fed machines for the printing of flexible
packaging of different webs and thicknesses.
We took part in Landa presentation during
which Mr. Benny Landa highlighted that
nano-technology will not replace offset but
it will be easily integrated with it because
offset will be more competitive for medium

C’è chi sostiene che Landa alla fine, affidando

fetta di mercato delle forniture
di inchiostri nanotecnologici di cui è
l’unico produttore al mondo (nanoink
sono particelle di inchiostro più piccole
di un microbo, che al contatto con il substrato
non lo penetrano, bensì polimerizzano
formando una pellicola, garanzia di
maggior qualità grazie a un più ampio
gamut colore) chi è convinto che invece
presenterà comunque delle proprie macchine,
magari cercando di differenziarle
per formati rispetto a quelle dei suoi licenziatari,
chi invece è convinto nonostante
tutto che si tratti di una bufala,
come tante se ne sono viste a Drupa.
Di certo c’è che la curiosità e l’interesse è
crescente, e lo abbiamo potuto vivere in
prima persona, giorno dopo giorno,
nello stand Landa, preso d’assalto da visitatori,
partner, competitor. Quello che
accadrà non lo possiamo prevedere, non
si sanno ovviamente ancora i prezzi, le
stretegie definitive, la qualità e la competitività
che queste macchine, a pieno
regime, potranno garantire, di certo

As far as the machine description is concer ned,
we will deal with this aspect in our next magazine
issue of July/August in which we are publishing
a special post-Drupa report.
Somebody says that, if Landa entrust licence
holders with their technologies, they will do it
simply to secure themselves the most important
thing, that is the monopolization of a
market niche currently related to the supply
of nano-technological inks, of which they are
the only manufacturers in the world (“nanoinks”
are actually ink particles smaller than a
microbe which, coming in touch with the substrate,
do not penetrate into it but polymerize
it forming a film. This ensures higher quality
thanks to a wider colour gamut).
Others, on the contrary, believe that Landa is
going to present, anyway, some machines of

Konica Minolta per citarne una sola che
in collaborazione con Komori sta sviluppano
una macchina per il formato
50x70), piuttosto che la Xeikon con le sue
macchine a bobina per la stampa in digitale
delle etichette.
Partnership, collaborazioni sempre più
frequenti, per poter unire il meglio di
ogni tecnologia e aumentare la propria
offerta, senza partire da zero, voglia di
uscire dai propri mercati di riferimento
per cogliere nuove opportunità.
Oggi non è più possibile infatti ragionare
secondo segmenti di stampa (offset, flexo,
rotocalco, digitale), e la tendenza che era
emersa già da Drupa 2008 con la presentazione
di macchine ibride aventi più tecnologie
di stampa e finishing tutte in linea
in una stessa soluzione, oggi non solo è
confermata dal punto di vista tecnologico,

theirs, maybe trying to diversify their formats
compared to those of their licence holders.
And somebody else is convinced that, in any
case, all this is going to be a blunder like ma -
ny others at Drupa.
Nevertheless, it is clear that interest and curiosity
are growing. We were able to realize this
personally, day by day, in Landa’s stand which
was stormed by visitors, partners and competitors.
Of course, we cannot predict what is
going to happen since we don’t know yet the
prices, the final strategies, the quality and competitiveness
that these machines will be able
to ensure when running at full speed.
Nevertheless, we do know that we are at a
crossroads from which it will be impossible to
come back. Landa is simply ahead of the times
of a revolution which is already ongoing. They
have signed partnerships with the biggest offset
printing companies offering digital presses
and exhibiting technologies exclusively dedicated
to the traditional offset market as well
as to the labelling or printing sector, and some
of them have displayed prototypes, like Konica
Minolta, just to mention one of them. Konica
Minolta, in collaboration with Komori, is de-

ma se vogliamo si allarga a un’idea strategica
che riposiziona l’azienda grafica come
fornitrice di un servizio completo e non
più di un prodotto.
L’azienda grafica tradizionale non esiste
più, le tirature lunghe, se non per poche e
grandi aziende, non esistono praticamente
più. Per poter continuare a essere
competitivi è indispensabile offrire un
servizio, risolvere un problema al proprio
cliente. Le tecnologie digitali, che come abbiamo
visto in Drupa stanno entrando
prepotentemente anche in settori apparentemente
tradizionali come la fustellatura,
dove la ditta israeliana Highcon, (in
Italia sarà rappresentata da Heidelberg),
propone una macchina in grado di cordonare
e fustellare senza ausilio di filetti di

digital label printing.
These partnerships and co-operations are
growing and are aiming at combining the best
of each technology in order to increase the offering
without starting from zero. They also
prove the will to explore new opportunities beyond
their markets of reference.
Today it is no longer possible only to follow
separate printing segments (offset, flexogra -
phy, rotogravure, digital printing).
As a matter of fact, since Drupa 2008 we have
noticed a tendency to present hybrid machines
equipped with more printing and finishing
technologies all incorporated into the
same solution. Now this tendency has not
only been consolidated from a technological
viewpoint, but it has also changed into a stra -
tegic idea according to which the graphics
company becomes the supplier of full services
and not only of mere products.
The conventional graphics company no longer
exists, and so do long rungs, except for a few
big companies.
In order to be competitive, it is essential to offer

di impianti e attrezzature in grado di risolvere
al proprio cliente determinati problemi
e allo stesso tempo garantirsi
mar gini di guadagno ormai svaniti se si ragiona
al prodotto di stampa fine a se stesso.
Molto probabilmente siamo davanti a una
nuova stagione per l’industria della stampa,
la quale non è destinata a sparire, bensì è
chiamata a dover affrontare il mercato in
maniera differente rispetto al passato.

Digital technologies, as we saw at Drupa,
are penetrating forcefully even into apparently
traditional sectors such as die-cutting, in which
the Israeli company Highcon (whose agent in
Italy will Heidelberg Macchingraf) offers a machine
capable of core cut slitting and die-cutting
without the aid of the relevant rules.
These technologies are purposely designed
for short runs which, provided they are carried
out with proper technologies, can still
ensure good margins of profit.
It’s not just a coincidence that also the finishing
industry of any reel-fed or sheet-fed
printed jobs is quickly growing. In fact, in
this compartment, without making huge investments,
you can equip your factory with
plants and machines capable of solving special
problems to your customers securing
yourselves, at the same time, good margins
of profit that you will never reach if you
work exclusively with single products.
No doubt, we are facing a new printing industry
era. Printing is not destined to disappear,
but it is called to approach the market
in a different way compared to the past.

Macchingraf, the official distributor for
Italy of Heidelberg brand, has acquired the
agency of the Israeli company Highcon.
Although this reality was born just two
years ago, it is ready to make itself known
on the converting market
After the signature of the agreement,
we talked about it with Dr. Luca Fattorossi,
Trade Manager, and Fran -
cesco Diomede, Packaging and Finishing
Manager at Macchingraf.
“This new partnership, which is not in conflict
either with the marketing of Heidelberg diecutters
or with the products by Kama, a company
represented by us, proves our growing
engagement in the world of paper conver ting.
But this is not all because, since May, we
have also acquired the agen cy of Gallus machines
for the labelling sector. This completes

The machine model Highcon Euclid will be
available starting from November at Plan ten,
Macchingraf’s subsidiary company, in Brussels
(Belgium) where some live demonstrations
will be organized for the companies interested.
“We really believe in this project which is particularly
suitable for short runs and we are
sure that the market is ready to appreciate
this new technology. Moreover, I’d like to assure
die-cutters and manufacturers of consumer
materials, which have been actually
eliminated by Euclid in its production workflow,
that there will be still space for their solutions
on conventional die-cutting machines
which will continue to be used for medium
and long runs that cannot be carried out by
Highcon Euclid. So this machine will comple -

A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE
DIGITAL DIE-CUTTING MACHINE
With Francesco Diomede, qualified and enthu
siastic manager of Macchingraf for the
paper converting packaging sector, we ha -
ve deepened our technical knowledge of
the new digital die-cutting machine.
“Euclid eliminates the whole manual set up
work required before the machine starting
up, as well as all the tools related to the die,
which is actually not present.
The machine exclusively processes board, also
coated one, whose thickness ranges from 0.3
to 0.6mm and it is suitable for carrying out
runs up to 10,000 sheets in maximum format
76x106cm, reaching the highest speed of 1500

Analizzando i tempi di setup e produzione
di una fustellatrice tradizionale, è
emerso che la velocità media di produzione
è di 3500, (con tirature inferiori a 10
mila fogli), fogli ora (includendo i tempi di
avviamento), con un fermo macchina del
40% circa. Onde evitare di perdere tempo
e soldi, il progetto di Highcon si è concentrato
sui tempi di preparazione del lavoro
con una tecnologia diversa.
"La cordonatura viene realizzata direttamente
in macchina, su di una "camicia"
montata su un cilindro, sulla quale vengono
estrusi i cordonatori composti da
una particolare resina che polimerizza
grazie alla presenza di lampade UV.
Il taglio del fustellato è invece realizzato
mediante tre laser, e dopo la fustellatura
digitale, il foglio di macchina viene impilato
sheets/h”, says Diomede.
Analysing the average setup and production
times of a conventional die-cutting machine
it is clear that the average production speed
reaches 3500 sheets/h (with runs lower than
10,000 sheets), including the starting up ti -
mes, with a machine downtime of about
40%. In order not to waste time and money,
Highcon project has been focused on the job
setting up times through a different technology.
“The core cut slitting is carried out directly
on the machine, on a “jacket” assembled onto
a cylinder on which the creasing components
are extruded.
The creasing components consist of a special
resin which polymerizes by means of UC
lamps. The die cutting is carried by three
lasers and, after the digital die cutting operation,
the sheet is stacked during the output
stage.
At present, there is no ejection station and,
therefore, the die cleaning has to be carried
out by the operator before the switching to

in uscita.
Non è prevista al momento una stazione
di estrazione, pertanto la pulizia del fustellato

ancora Diomede, annunciando che però
per metà 2013 Highcon introdurrà anche
una stazione di pulizia del fustellato, anch'essa
estremamente innovativa come del
resto lo è la Euclid, e questa soluzione sarà
implementabile su macchine eventualmente
già installate.
Come funziona il processo di acquisizione
dei dati circa il lavoro da fustellare?
"La macchina riceve il file, sia esso DXF,
PDF, ILLUSTRATOR..., e successivamente
inizia il processo di estrusione della resina
che andrà a formare i cordonatori
in senso trasversale- longitudinale sulla
camicia, e viene poi avviata l'acquisizione
dei dati per la programmazione
del taglio laser".
La camicia quante volte è riutilizzabile?
"La camicia sulla quale viene estrusa la
resina per i cordonatori garantisce fino
a 10mila fogli. Se la tiratura è inferiore
Highcon consiglia comunque di ripristinarne
una nuova per il lavoro successivo.
L'operazione è talmente semplice, immediata,
veloce ed economica che non
vale la pena rischiare di compromettere
la fustellatura di una breve tiratura per
risparmiare pochi euro".

How does the data acquisition process work
concerning the job being die-cut?
“The machine receives the file which can be

Macchingraf ha iniziato fin da Drupa la raccolta
di eventuali pre-ordini, da confermare
poi dopo la presa in visione della macchina
nella sua versione definitiva, che sarà pronta
per novembre. È presumibile prevedere le
prime consegne per i primi mesi del 2013.
