Partirei dall'idea che l'immagine
non è mai copia della realtà
anche se ciò a volte
incautamente viene sostenuto.
La semplice posizione della
camera, la scelta dell'obiettivo,
l'ora del giorno, fanno
dell'immagine opera
dell'invenzione a dispetto di tutti
i realismi e neorealismi teorizzati.
Il realismo dell'immagine è
realistico quanto l'immagine di
un sogno. Io ci devo trovare il
mistero, la magie inedite del
sogno quale che sia il suo
significato. Penso al realismo
reale ed irreale di tante immagini
del "neorealismo" (De Sica,
Visconti, Rossellini) e a quelle
dei primi film di Pasolini. Per me
l'immagine è un condensato di
significati molteplici che ha
quindi riferimenti con la sfera
del sogno. Quando ci si sveglia
dopo un sogno, rimangono in
mente immagini inedite cariche
di forza. In quei momenti si
comprende meglio il valore
nativo ed evocativo
dell'immagine.
Inventare ^immagini è il nostro
mestiere. E come se prima e
dopo l'immagine ci fosse il caos,
cioè il non-significato.
L'immagine è lo sforzo di
conoscenza-esperienza che
attraversa gli occhi. Regista e
direttore della fotografia per
inventare l'immagine dovrebbero
avere fatto lo stesso sogno.
Sembrerebbe impossibile. Di
fatto ciascuno dei due cerca di
accostare il proprio abbozzo di
immagine a quello dell'altro per
farli combaciare. Da ciò la
necessità di una collaborazioe
profonda.
Non esiste l'immagine da un lato
e il suo significato dall'altro:
l'immagine è significativa di per
se stessa. Di conseguenza non
può nascere l'immagine da un
regista che dice un significato
(che riesce solo ad esprimerlo a
parole) e un direttore della
fotografia che prova ad
inventare. L'invenzione
dell'immagine, secondo me, è il
risultato alchemico fra due che
riescono a "vedere" la stessa
Pensare e ascoltare
"San Francesco" di Giuseppe Lanci
immagine come se facessero un
sogno insieme. Forse non è
sempre facile ma non è neanche
facile inventare immagini.
Vediamo spesso film fatti del
parlare e dell'argomentare del
regista e del fotografare del
LILIANA CAVANI
direttore della fotografia, cioè
film privi di immagini. Non so se
ci sia una strada da seguire per
inventare immagini. L'inizio
della strada è senz'altro quello di
pensare e ascoltare il più
possibile.
I would like to begin by saying that
the image is never a copy of reality,
even though this a theory that is
sometimes rashly upheld. The very
position of the camera, the choice of
lens, and the time of day, make the
image creative, regardless of all the
theories about realism and neorealism.
The reality of an image is as real as a
dream. And, for me, the image has to
have both mystery and the
extraordinary magic of a dream,
whatever its significance might be. 1
think of the real, and unreal, "realism"
of many of the "neorealistic" images
created by De Sica, Visconti and
Rossellini, and those in Pasolini's early
films. I believe the image is a synthesis
of many meanings and is, therefore,
related to the world of dreams. When
one wakes from a dream,
extraordinarily powerful images remain
in one's mind. And it is in these
moments that one gains a deeper
understanding of how images are
actually bom, how evocative they can
be.
Creating images is our profession. But
creating extraordinary images in the
raw state is not easy. It is as if both
before and after the image there were
chaos, or in other words, non-meaning.
Our creativity tranforms our
knowledge and experience into images
before our eyes.
To create an image together, the
Director and Director of Photography
need to have experienced the same
dream. Something that hardly seems
possible. In fact, each tries to reconcile
the idea he/she has for the image with
that of the other. For this reason, they
have to establish a very cbse rapport.
The image cannot be separated from
its meaning, as it is meaningful in
itself. Consequently, an image cannot
be created by a Director who
communicates it verbally, and a
Director of Photography who tries to
visualize it. As far as 1 am concerned,
an image is only truly created when a
wonderful chemistry exists between the
two, arid they are both able to "see"
the image as if they were dreaming it. 1
know this isn't always easy, but
neither is creating images. We often
find ourselves watching films in which
we hear the Director speaking and
theorizing, while the Director of
Photography tries to photograph what
he's saying.
I don't know if there are any rules for
creating images, but I would make the
first one to listen and reflect as much
as possible.
