Carmine Gallone sul set di "Casa Ricoidi"
cinema, di vita, adorabile. Ennio
Flaiano, lucido e implacabile.
sdrammatizzare ogni cosa. Il tuo
realismo umano faceva sbollire
problemi che si sgonfiavano in
un istante.
Il più caro degli uomini maestri è
stato il mio caro Memmo
Modestini. Geniale pittore, nel
suo lavoro dipingeva con i
pennelli nelle due mani.
Incredibile, in alto mare da solo
dipingeva una fiancata di una
nave in poche ore mentre si
girava l'altra parte, e via per
giorni e giorni. Di tutti quelli
che ho avuto accanto è quello
che più rimpiango. Mi piaceva
bere con lui un bicchiere mentre
gli sprizzavano gli occhi di gioia
sincera.
Come in un teatrino fatato, ho
seguito Piccoli a Cinecittà dove
m'insegnava tutti i trucchi che
aveva inventato. Maestro, mago
— perduto, peccato! Per la cecità
di burocrati che hanno distrutto
il suo reparto perché ritenuto
sorpassato, ed oggi, dopo 40
anni, nessuno conosce quel
cinema fatto di pura intelligenza.
Peccato!
Alvaro Belsole, cresciuto con
me, con i miei film, scelto nel
"Gattopardo", nel "Compagni",
a dirigere il reparto costruzioni.
Un leone mansueto ma forte,
con la sua grinta instancabile.
Sordi, Sergio Leone, Bertolucci,
Carlo Egidi, A.G. Bragaglia,
Scarfiotti, Pasolini, Luigi Zampa,
Piero Tosi, Vera Marzot,
Sensani, Duilio Coletti, Goffredo
Lombardo, Comencini,
Armando Nannuzzi, De Sica,
Zavattini, Pinelli, Tellini,
Barbaro Pasinetti, Diamante,
stirpe di macchinisti di scena.
Soldati, Aldo, Rocchetti, Rivo
Garboti, De Rossi truccatore di
fama mondiale.
Non vorrei dimenticare nessuno,
soprattutto perché a tutti, alla
loro "scuola" dovremmo il
nostro "rinascimento". Quel
rinascimento che deve per forza
passare, nel sapere reinventare,
per il nostro futuro in un mondo
pacifico, in un Europa unita, la
perfezione delle "immagini", che
unico linguaggio universale
donerà a tutti gli uomini del
mondo le scintille dei nostri
poveri, umilissimi geni.
Cinema: Images...Images. 7 !
I've almost forgotten what they look
like! Just as "one swallow doesn't make
a spring", a dozen Oscars don't mean
that the Italian Cinema is in winning
form.
It is difficult to make people
understand this, because everyone
illudes themselves that it isn't true,
which is just refusing to face reality.
Serious affirmations, indeed, which 1
shall attempt, in some way, to prove.
Let's start with "televisionization", a
ccmtagoius disease, like leprosy, which
attacks full-length feature films and
eats away a large portion of their
images. Their long shots. And the sets
which create the feeling of the film in
such a "full" way — rare — oh, so rare,
and loved above all by those film
authors who made the cinema such a
fine traditional craft, through "having
learned their craft by also working as
assistants on the set".
Syntax, language, style, and technique
are passed on, but with an eye to what
has happened in Hollywood, London,
Paris and, why not, Moscow!
There was also — still unresolved — the
battle of the "specifics" with, on the
one hand, that which should by rights
be the cinema's and, on the other, that
which was imposed by television.
However, 1 fear — indeed, I am certain
— that when it came to choosing one or
the other, the deciding factor was the
budget — the costing — the actual cost,
