E volentieri che faccio mia una
frase, letta a pag. 81 del libro di
Giorgio Albertazzi «Un perdente
di successo», quale introduzione
a questo mio intervento:
«...tutte quelle cose, persone,
emozioni intorno, sopra e sotto
l'azione vera e propria del
«recitare» che è del cinema (del
teatro) l'aspetto più ovvio e
meno stimolante, (il teatro) il
cinema è (era) quell'immaginare
oscuro e pericoloso, incerto e
subliminale, tutto quell'insieme
di imprevedibili relazioni cui lo
stare assieme per uno scopo (la
messa in scena) dava luogo...»
Mi scuso, Giorgio, se ho
approfittato di una «cosa» tua,
ma è successo per un
imprevedibile insieme di rapporti
che non ho potuto fare a meno
di associare tale pensiero alle
magnifiche esperienze da me
vissute durante le riprese di
«Maria con i suoi angeli...».
La ricerca luministica fu per me
estremamente stimolante. Far
scaturire tutta la delicatezza, il
tono, l'atmosfera, la scelta del
negativo appropriato, onde
rendere viva e attuale una storia
praghese postsessantotto. Lo
sforzo compiuto da me fotografo
per quell 'immaginare oscuro e
pericoloso.
Mi piace prender l'avvio da quel
«pericoloso». Pericoloso perché
pervaso dall'angoscia di non
azzeccare il tono appropriato,
angoscia che sempre mi assale
quando intraprendo la
lavorazione di qualsiasi film.
E poi, l'immaginare oscuro,
termine pieno di mistero, cui fa
riscontro l'incognita, il fascino
dell'imprevisto, per quel che
scaturirà più tardi dal nostro
negativo (cosa c'è dietro
v i m m a g l n e e g u m j t o w
...Immaginare oscuro
e pericoloso
l'angolo, insinua Maurizio
Costanzo).
Una perpetua emozione e
sofferenza... fino alla sospirata
proiezione, che conferma poi
l'incerto e subliminale.
Tutto questo insieme di aspre e
piacevoli frustazioni e paure,
portano tuttavia ad una
speculazione quasi
meccanicistica mercè la quale il
nostro fantasticare luminoso
impalpabile si concretizza in
potenze elettriche, direzione di
raggi, attenuazioni di luci
violente e intensificazioni di
lampade fioche. Tutto studiato e
programmato, costruito
geometricamente, come
l'architetto progetta la sua opera
partendo da elementi astratti.
Così,da una sceneggiatura, a
volte scarna e disadorna, si
compie il miracolo della luce, dei
colori e delle reazioni
chimico-fisiche, che si chiama
fotografia e che affascina la
platea.
"Gli angeli del potere"
GIUSEPPE PINORI
Qui, accanto, più evidenti di
ogni discorso, parlano le
immagini del lavoro compiuto.
It is with great pleasure that I make
one of Giorgio Albertazzi's phrases
mine, which can be found in his book
«UN PERDENTE DI SUCCESSO»
(A WINNING LOSER), on page 81
to be precise.
«... all those things, people and
emotions outside the actual acting,
which comprise the more obvious and
less stimulating aspect of cinema
(theatre). Cinema (theatre) is (was)
that dark and dangerous imagining,
uncertain and subliminal, all those
unpredictable relationships brought
about by our being together to create
the mise-en-scène...»
I'm sorry to have plagiarized you in
this way, Giorgio, but you must blame
«all those unpredictable relationships»
that were created during the
magnificent experience of filming,
«Maria con i suoi Angeli...», as it
was these that is brought your phrase
to mind.
The problems I had to solve on the
157
lighting were particularly stimulating:
how to obtain the softness of colour,
tone and atmosphere, and choose the
right negative to do it — to bring alive
and make vital a story set in Prague in
the post-invasion years. This was my
part, as Director of Photography, in
the «dark and dangerous imagining».
Let's consider first the word
«dangerous». The danger arises from
the anxiety one experiences should one
not be able to achieve exactly the right
photographic tone, something I
inevitably experience whenever I start
work on a film.
Then, there's the «dark imagining»,
words charged with mystery, which
conjure up the unknown and the
unexpected, both of which cannot but
fascinate, and which are revealed when
the negative is developed (that which
hides around the comer, as Maurizio
Costanzo insinuates).
The emotion and tension never let up...
until we attend the long-awaited
screening, and the uncertain and
subliminal aspetcts are confirmed.
All the terrible, and at the same time
stimulating, frustrations, lead to an
almost mechanicalistic speculating,
which results in all our wonderful
imaginings for the light being realized
by units of electrical power, beams
directed in a certain way, harsh light
being attenuated and weak light being
intensified.
Thus, the film takes shape and the
action develops in the various settings,
its images charged with the dynamism
and evocativeness so typical of the
Cinema.
Everything is studied and planned,
composed geometrically, in the same
way that an architect designs a
building by starting from an abstract
idea.
Beginning with a script that sometimes
merely provides the bare bones, one
works the «miracle» of light, colour
and physicochemical reactions, known
as photography, to make films which
keep the audience enthralled. .
These photographs from the film say
far more than any words.
