DANIELE NANNUZZI
Il giovane Toscanini" è
ambientato nel 1900 e suddiviso
J n tre parti.
La prima, nei saloni dorati delle
audizioni, alla Scala di Milano.
La seconda, sulla nave in viaggio
per " Sud America. La terza in
Brasile, nelle strade, nelle
"favelas", negli ospedali dei
quartieri degli schiavi, e nel
Teatro Imperiale di Rio de
Janeiro.
Nonostante la diversità dei
luoghi, ho voluto che si
respirasse sempre un'aria
"Italiana", così mi sono rifatto a
quella Italia romantica e
"scapigliata" rappresentati nei
quadri di Boldini, Segantini,
Fattori...
Negli esterni ho girato sempre
con controluce fortissimi
avvolgendo i personaggi di luce
diffusa.
Mi ha particolarmente
impegnato la rappresentazione
dell'Aida. Bisognava illuminare la
scena con i mezzi e il gusto
molto "pomposo" di quei tempi.
Nei primi del '900 la corrente
elettrica era agli albori e non
esistevano proiettori, ma solo
luci di ribalta.
Ho esasperato molto questo
effetto di luce dal basso e ho
saturato i colori usando tanta
luce fino ad arrivare a 8,0 di
diaframma. 11 risultato ricorda le
famose "ballerine" di Degas,
mentre la saturazione dei colori e
i fortissimi tagli dorati mettono
L'IMMAGINE E GIL AU10R1
in risalto gli splendidi costumi e
le scenografie di Lila de Nobili,
veri pezzi di antiquariato
"riesumati" dagli archivi della
Scala di Milano da Franco
Zeffirelli.
Il giovane Toscanini" di Daniele Nannuzzi painters, Boldini, Segantini and
..."ho sempre voluto fare questo
mestiere fin da bambino, quando
guardavo mio padre illuminare i
teatri di posa. Mi viene in mente
solo una frase per sintetizzare
quello che provo per il mio
lavoro; "Questo sol m'arde e
questo m'innamora"... peccato
che l'aggia già detta
Michelangelo Buonarroti!...
"Il Giovane Toscanini" (Young
Toscanini) is set in the early 1900s,
and the film is divided into three parts:
The first part takes place in the
audition rooms, decorated in gold, of
La Scala in Milan; the second on the
ship that takes Toscanini to South
America; and the third in Rio de
Janeiro in Brazil: in the streets, the
"favelas", the hospitals in the poor
areas inhabited by the slaves, and the
Teatro Imperiale.
Even though the locations were so
vastly different, I wanted the images to
communicate a feeling of Italy, and so
I drew my inspiration from the Italian
Fattori, trying to create the same
Bohemian feeling, the same romance...
I used very strong back lighting for the
exteriors, and surrounded the
characters with diffused light.
The performance of "Aida" was
particularly difficult to light, as I had
to illuminate the stage, using the
lighting equipment of that particular
era, am achieve the grandiose effects
that were so popular then.
In the early 1900s, electrical
engineering was in its very early stages:
therefore, there were no spotlights, only
footlights. I used the "footlight" effect
exhaustively, saturated the colours, and
inundated the sets with light, to the
point that I had to reduce the aperture
of the stop to as much as 8.0. The
resulting images are very similar to
Degas' famous "ballerinas", while the
saturated colours and strong shafts of
golden light show the original costumes
and sets, designed by Lila de Nobili,
and "resurrected" by Franco Zeffirelli
from La Scala's archives, in all their
splendour.
I always wanted to be a Director of
Photography, even when I was a little
boy, and used to watch my father set
up lighting in the studios. There's one
phrase that really expresses how I feel
about my work, and that is: "Questo
Sol m'arde e questo m'innamora"
(This sun, that is my inspiration and
my love!)
Too bad Michelangelo already said it!
