Forse la nostra è una delle più
simpatiche professioni del mondo
moderno. Ti fa osservare la
realtà nelle sue forme e nei suoi
contenuti più reconditi. Ti fa
avvicinare principi e diseredati,
confrontandone il
comportamento senza
prevenzioni e senza rischi. Ti
porta a visitare con lo stesso
entusiasmo e la stessa libertà i
quartieri tra i più lussuosi e i
tuguri della suburra. Ti fa
conoscere la gente faccia, faccia,
diventarne subito amico,
ostentandone il primo piano e
riproducendo da protagonista
l'immagine del secolo che
trapassa.
Ma soprattutto nel mestiere
dell'operatore si cela la gioia di
sapere che il proprio lavoro potrà
alleviare, magari per un breve
momento, la disperazione le
frustrazioni e le angosce dello
spettatore che cerca rifugio nella
penombra della sala da
proiezione e vi reperisce
divertimento e oblìo per gli
insanabili traumi della vita.
I think that ours is perhaps one of the
most interesting ana enjoyable of
today's professions. It allows us to
observe reality in all its most hidden
aspects, all its most recondite forms. It
permits us to bring prince and pauper
face to face without any prejudice. It
takes us to visit an exclusive residential
area or the slums on the outskirts of a
city with equal freedom and
enthusiasm. It enables us to strike up
immediate friendships, to get to know
people intimately, and to show them to
the world in close-up, as the stars of
this century in which we are living.
However, I think the most gratifying
thing about being a Director of
Photography is that inner jcry we
experience in knowing that the films
we work on succeed in alleviating, if
only for a short while, the despair,
frustrations and anguish of the people
who go to see them, whos, seeking
refuge in the darkness, suddenly find
themselves lost in the film, having
totally forgotten the seemingly
unresoi'able problems they left outiside.
