GIUSEPPE MODICA Quantunque il lavoro del cinema
sia eminentemente un lavoro di
equipe, vorrei puntualizzare le
mansioni del direttore di
fotografia, come lo sono io.
È fuori discussione che quello
che dico è soggettivo e per ciò
può anche prestare il fianco alla
critica. Ma, a mio giudizio, il
direttore della fotografia è un
pittore, scusate la presunzione,
che dipinge sulla pellicola
anziché sulla tela, e con la luce
invece che coi colori. E chiaro
che si tratta di un lavoro assai
importante; un lavoro di
responsabilità. E alla fine di tutto
ce il memento della verità,
quando si va in proiezione e si ha
modo di apprezzare la fotografia,
specie se riesce a compensare le
deficienze della storia.
Penso che gli sforzi per ottenere
il riconoscimento del diritto
d'autore alla nostra categoria
siano assai lodevoli, perché è
fuori dubbio che tutto ciò che è
visibile nel film lo si vede per
merito nostro in quanto
ciascuno di noi vi pone
entusiasmo e sacrificio. I risultati
saranno più o meno positivi, ma,
per lo meno nel mio caso, si fa di
tutto per ottenere il meglio di
noi stessi.
Although one works on a film as a
team, 1 would like to explain the work
of the Director of Photography, as I
myself see it.
It goes without saying that mine will
be a subjective point of view, and will
leave me wide open to criticism.
However, it is my opinion that the
Director of Photography is an "artist"
— I know this sounds presumptuous -
who "paints" with light instead of
colour, on film instead of canvas.
Naturally, our work is of considerable
importance and carries a great deal of
responsbility. And at the end of it all,
there is the moment of truth in the
screening room, when the Director of
Photography's work is appreciated in
full, especially if it compensates for any

weak points in the story.
1 think all the efforts that are being,
and have been made, so that the
Director of Photography might be
recognized as "co-author" by Law, are
praiseworthy, indeed. What one sees on
the screen, one sees thanks to the
Director of Photography, because each
one of us works with tremendous
enthusiasm and puts the film before
anything else. The end result might, or
might not be great, but one always
gives of one's best — at least, I do.
