bene, non citeremo quindi Ramazzotti, la Hunziker, Costa,
Bergomi, la Ferrario, la Arcuri, che allo studio Vanini
periodicamente sono di casa.
Lorenzo Vanini nasce nel 1955 in Valle Intelvi da una
famiglia modesta che crede però profondamente nella
cultura, a 360 gradi. Si laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia
all’Università di Pavia nel 1980. I suoi maestri più
importanti sono stati i dottori Ivano Casartelli e Fabio
Toffenetti (presidente degli “Amici di Brugg”), che ama
spesso ricordare, poi una lunga carriera a studiare i
materiali collaborando con Bayer, 3M e da dodici anni
con il dipartimento sviluppo e ricerca materiali della
GDF di Francoforte per trovare nuovi materiali e tecniche
di ricostruttiva estetica. «Per molti l’aspetto estetico è

studying materials in collaboration with Bayer, 3M and
the last twelve years with GDF’s materials’ development
and research department in Frankfurt, endeavouring to
come up with new cosmetic reconstruction materials and
techniques. “To many people, looks are all-important”,
says the doctor. “So we’ve found new approaches to

avvicinando sempre più allo stesso livello dello smalto

aver esposto la mia idea al dottor Niem, il chimico
tedesco responsabile di un team di centocinquanta

icercatori tra chimici, fisici e ingegneri che lavorano nel
suo dipartimento. Siamo partiti con grande entusiasmo
incontrando però enormi difficoltà sia nel depositare il
brevetto internazionale, sia nello sviluppo del prodotto,
come sempre avviene quando ti addentri in campi nuovi,
poco o per nulla esplorati e conosciuti. Oggi il nuovo
materiale è nella fase finale di messa a punto e inoltre il
governo locale tedesco (Hessenagentur) e l’European
Council, avendo recepito l’importanza della nostra
ricerca, saranno gli sponsor ufficiali del progetto; questo
fatto mi rende orgoglioso di essere italiano».
In vent’anni di studi, il dentista ha brevettato una tecnica
di stratificazione e determinazione del colore che in
tutto il mondo viene chiamata del “dottor Vanini”. Vanini
è docente di Odontoiatria Ricostruttiva Estetica alla
Sapienza di Roma e all’Università di Marsiglia, socio
attivo della Società italiana di Odontoiatria Conservativa
e dell’American Society for Dental Aesthetic. Svolge
attività di ricerca in Italia e in Germania ed è docente di
master universitari in Italia e all’estero. Quando non è in
giro per il mondo tiene corsi di aggiornamento nel suo
centro corsi a San Fedele, magari collegato via satellite
in videoconferenza con la Germania o con l’Olanda. Se
vi capiterà di incontrarlo non pensate però a un saccente
medico che vi tedierà con una valanga di termini tecnici.
Vanini è genuino come la sua terra, che non ha mai
voluto abbandonare, genuino come la tavola imbandita
per quell’indimenticabile intervista a San Fedele, a
colazione con invitati di lingue e culture diverse. Un po’
di prosciutto crudo, funghi della Valle Intelvi, salame
nostrano, salmone, un assaggio di lasagne, frutta e
un bel gelato. Dimenticavamo la cosa più importante:
Lorenzo Vanini è sposato, con una dentista naturalmente,
Olga Klimoskaia, conosciuta come allieva in università e
da dieci anni moglie e preziosa collaboratrice nello studio
di San Fedele; Olga e Lorenzo hanno due splendide
bambine, Margherita e Letizia, di 8 e 3 anni e mezzo.

into hitherto virtually unexplored territory. Today this
new material has reached its final refinement stage,
and the local German government (Hessenagentur)
together with the European Council – having realized
the importance of our research – will be the project’s
official sponsors; this fact makes me proud to be
Italian!” Twenty years’ research has led to the dentist’s
patenting a layering and colour determination technique
which is known the world over as “Dr Vanini’s”. Vanini
is Head of Aesthetic Reconstruction Dentistry at Rome’s
Sapienza University as well as at the University of
Marseilles, an active member of the Società Italiana di
Odontoiatria Conservativa and the American Society for
Dental Aesthetics. He conducts research in Italy and
Germany and is lecturer in Master degrees in Italian
and foreign universities. When not travelling around
the world he gives refresher lectures at his course
centre in San Fedele, sometimes relayed via satellite as
videoconferences to Germany or Holland. But if you run
into him, don’t dismiss him as some know-it-all doctor
who will bog you down in technical jargon: Vanini is as
down to earth as his place of origin which he has never
abbandoned, as down to earth as that table set out for
that unforgettable interview in San Fedele over a meal
with guests of different languages and cultures – some
raw ham, mushrooms from Valle Intelvi, free-range
salame, salmon, a lasagna taster, fruit and some nice
icecream. But we’re forgetting the most important
thing: Lorenzo Vanini is married to Olga Klimoskaia
(a dentist of course) whom he met when she was a
university student; for ten years she’s been his wife and
indispensable collaborator in their San Fedele surgery.
Olga and Lorenzo have two lovely girls Margherita and
Letizia aged 8 and 3 and a half.

Quattro passi nelle vecchie strade a lago, rasentando case
secolari ben ristrutturate, che tuttavia mantengono facciate
gentilizie, di cui alcune di elegante cotto con stemmi e altre con
caratteristici portoncini di pietra. Un itinerario ideale per vivere
qualche minuto di romanticismo e catturare fotograficamente
scorci pittorici oltre i quali si staglia il blu dell’acqua lacustre.
Non contenti, ci si può spingere verso la parte alta dove, tra
suggestivi vicoli acciottolati e basse volte che li mettono in
comunicazione, si scorgono le antiche case di pura pietra, che
tradiscono l’origine contadina o artigiana, molte però riadattate
ad abitazione e qualcuna in fase di rifacimento conservativo.
Questa è la zona che trasuda la storia ultramillenaria del borgo,
che un tempo era più ricco, quindi più potente, di Como
capoluogo. Ricchezza che derivava dalla lavorazione dei “panni
lani”, antenati della seta, esportati allora in tutta Europa.
Siamo a Torno, paese aggrappato alla falde della collina
che culmina in Montepiatto, pochi edifici adibiti a luoghi di
villeggiatura – anche per l’aria salubre dell’altura – un tempo
rifugio dalle pestilenze. Dal piazzale adiacente alla chiesa di
Santa Elisabetta, con annesso convento abitato da monache
fino al XVI secolo, quando le due sopravvissute furono “rapite”
da Carlo Borromeo e portate (la leggenda dice in volo) al Sacro
Monte di Varese, da quassù, insomma, il panorama sul Lario è
a dir poco unico. Certo, per arrivare a Montepiatto ci vogliono
un paio d’ore di cammino su un sentiero scalinato ben tenuto.
Ma, credete, ne vale la pena.
E non si manchi di visitare la chiesa di Santa Tecla, a lago,
e di vedere lo splendido gruppo ligneo, otto figure scolpite
in pioppo, che raffigurano il “Compianto al Cristo morto”. E,
A walk along the old lake side lanes along well renovated
century old houses that maintain noble facades, some
in elegant terracotta tiles with coats of arms, others with
distinctive stone doorways. An ideal itinerary to experience
a few romantic moments and capture picturesque views
with the lake’s blu waters in the background. Wandering
towards the higher part of town, among suggestive cobbled
lanes and low vaults, you can spot ancient stone dwellings
betraining their farmer and artisan origin.
Many have now been turned into houses or are being
renovated. The bourgh’s millenary history exudes in this
area, once wealthier and more important than Como.
Its riches came from the processing of woollen fabrics
exported in all of Europe.
We are in Torno, the town clinging to the sides of the slope
culminating into Montepiatto, with its few summer houses
that once served as refuge from pestilence. The view from
the square next to Saint Elisabeth’s Chuch, with its convent
inhabited by nuns up until the 16 th century, when the last
two were kidnapped by Carlo Borromeo and carried to the
Sacred Mount in Varese (the legend says they where flown),
the view of Lake Como, we were saying, is breathtaking. Of
course you need a two hour walk up a well kept stair trek to
reach Montepiatto, but it’s well worth it.
And don’t forget to visit St. Tecla Chuch along the lake, with
its eight figure woodden sculpture depicting the “mourning
of Jesus”. But most of all don’t miss the nearby Chuch of
St. John. Its origin is unknown and it is now late gothic, its

soprattutto, la non lontana chiesa di San Giovanni. Non se ne
conosce l’origine, ora è di stile tardogotico; l’impagabile portale
marmoreo, fine Quattrocento, è della scuola dei Rodari, insigni
scultori anche del Duomo di Como. Vi è custodito anche un
chiodo di ferro, che la tradizione vuole essere uno dei chiodi
della croce di Cristo. Fu lasciato qui da un vescovo alemanno
reduce da Gerusalemme liberata (XI secolo).
Il prelato, fermatosi a Torno nel viaggio di ritorno in patria,
tentò tre volte di uscire in barca verso l’altolago, ma fu sempre
respinto da un forte vento, che però cadeva quando la barca
rientrava. Il vescovo si convinse che fosse intervento divino
e lo interpretò come ordine a lasciare qui il Sacro Chiodo.
Che poi sarebbe diventato miracoloso grazie all’acqua in cui
periodicamente veniva immerso.
Torno dista pochi minuti d’auto da Como, verso Bellagio, e
oggi dispone di numerosi posteggi, che anni fa mancavano.

Inside the church is a steel nail that legend says is one of
those from Holy Cross, it was left here by a german bishop
returning from freed Gerusalem (XI century).
The prelate stopped in Torno on his way home and tried
three times to leave by boat and was always prevented by
strong winds that ceased once he returned to harbour. He
took this to be a sign from God that the Holy Nail should be
left in Torno, where it eventually became miraculous thanks
to the water into which it was periodically immersed.
Torno is only a few minute’s drive from Como, towards
Bellagio, and now offers a lot of parking space that was once
lacking. The origin of its name – there are various theories
– may come from the celtic word “turn”, maybe because
the lake “turns” around its promontory.

IL VAPORE, PARK PRIVATO
E PASTA FATTA IN CASA
Il Vapore, gestione familiare dal 2001, si
apre al termine della stradina scalinata
che porta alla suggestiva piazzetta con il
porticciolo e l’imbarcadero dei battelli. È
dunque agevole raggiungerlo via lago con
il servizio di linea o con un motoscafo da
piazza Cavour, a Como. Il giardino a lago è
il vanto estetico dei titolari, con i suoi alberi
secolari, dai rami bassi, nodosi, a mo’
di bonsai però cresciuto. Il “tris Vapore”
di pasta fatta in casa è il modo migliore
per aprire, dopo gli antipasti, il pranzo o
la cena. E il tiramisù sempre della casa
è quello ottimale per chiuderli. In mezzo,
soltanto l’imbarazzo della scelta. Per i vini
un profumato Franciacorta bianco o un ben
noto e apprezzato Sassella rosso. Per chi
volesse arrivare in macchina, invece che via
lago, il Vapore dispone anche di una decina
di posti auto. Osserva il turno di riposo il
mercoledì.

that leads to the quaint town square
with its small harbor and boat pier.
Therefore it can be easily reached
by boat with the regular service or

with its ancient trees and gnarled
branches like overgrown bonsais,
is the owners’ pride. Vapore’s triple
home made pasta dish is the best
way to start lunch or dinner, the
house’s tiramisu is an excellent way
to end it. In between you have only to
choose, and as for wines, try a savory
white Franciacorta or a renown red
Sassella.
If you prefer coming by car, Il Vapore
also has about ten parking spots.

300 anni. Infatti, il Villa Flora,
che offre una veranda a vetri a

dimora che risale al 1723. È

un primo cuoco con trascorsi al
Palace di St. Moritz, a Villa d’Este
di Cernobbio ed esperienze in
Inghilterra. Oggi è tutto in mano
a Massimo Xodo, nipote dell’ex
maître, con un passato anche in
Francia e in Germania. E, cosa
non da poco, è aperto sette giorni
su sette. Cosa offre a tavola? La
risposta è in un menu rompicapo
con una cinquantina di piatti
che fanno riflettere anche il più
smaliziato dei buongustai. C’è
praticamente di tutto e in tutti i
modi, dal tradizionale pesce di
lago ai primi piatti con tartufo
nero, dalla vera fiorentina ai dolci
con frutti di bosco. E, per la bella
stagione, non manca la piscina.

Maschere intagliate a mano in legno di noce, costumi
tradizionali preparati accuratamente, a uno a uno, decine di
figuranti che mettono in scena la quotidiana contrapposizione
tra i ricchi e i poveri.
È irresistibile per gli amanti dei travestimenti e delle feste in
maschera il fascino esercitato dal Carnevale di Schignano,
sicuramente il più caratteristico del territorio lariano. La
kermesse vanta un’antica tradizione e ha origini che si
tramandano di anno in anno e resistono al passare del
tempo e delle mode.
Ogni anno, in occasione del Carnevale, a Schignano decine
di figuranti mettono in scena la contrapposizione, senza
venire mai in contatto, nell’indifferenza reciproca, tra i Belli,
cioè i signori e i Brutti, che rappresentano i poveri.
I ricchi, detti Mascarun o Bej, si travestono in casa con
l’aiuto delle donne della famiglia e vestono costumi sfarzosi
ed eleganti. Indossano un gran cappello decorato con
piume, fiori e nastri multicolori. Legati alla cintura hanno dei
campanacci di bronzo che fanno un rumore caratteristico
per segnare l’arrivo e il passaggio del corteo.
I Brutti si mascherano in stalle e fienili fuori dal paese,
indossano tute da lavoro e pelli di pecora. Sulle spalle
portano gerle piene di rifiuti, mentre sulle loro teste si
notano grandi corna di bue, corrono senza tregua per le vie
del paese facendo risuonare i loro campanacci di ferro, si
rotolano per terra e si gettano al suolo come morti.
L’elemento più caratteristico sono le maschere che coprono
i volti dei figuranti, tutte intagliate a mano in legno di noce.
Pezzi unici, che in molti casi vantano storie che rimandano
indietro nel tempo.
CARNEVALE di
I belli e i brutti
Hand-carved walnut-wood masks, traditional costumes
carefully tailored one by one, dozens of walk-on extras
enacting the daily discord between rich and poor. Those who
love dressing up and fancy-dress parties will find Schignano
Carneval, which is definitely the most typical one in the
Como area, irresistibly spellbinding.
The kermis proudly re-enacts an ancient tradition whose
origins are handed down year after year standing the
test of both time and passing fashion. Every year to mark
Carneval in Schignano dozens of walk-on extras stage the
rivalry between the Beautiful (i.e. the gentry) and the Ugly
(representing the poor); this all takes place with no contact
between the two mutually indifferent parties.
The rich called Mascarun or Bej, dress up at home with
the help of the women in the family in elegant gaudy
costumes. They wear huge hats ornated with feathers,
flowers and multi-coloured ribbons. Tied to their belts are
bronze cowbells clanging characteristically to mark the
arrival and passing-by of the procession. The Ugly dress up
in cowsheds and barns outside the village in overalls and
sheep skins. On their backs they carry panniers filled with
rubbish, whereas large ox horns can be seen on their heads.
They rush unceasingly through the streets of the village
jangling their iron cowbells, roll around on the ground and
throw themselves down as though they were dead.
The typical slant to events is provided by the players’ handcarved
walnut face-masks, unique items often depicting
age-old tales. The procession is opened by the Sapoeur
(the tillers) attired in sheep skins and with blackened faces.
In the evening of Shrove Tuesday along comes Carlisep

Il corteo viene aperto dai Sapoeur, gli zappatori, vestiti di pelli
di pecora e con il volto annerito. La sera del martedì grasso
appare, trascinato da una slitta, Carlisep, un fantoccio
che raffigura il Carnevale morente. I partecipanti al corteo
vogliono bruciarlo, lui scappa ma viene ripreso e la festa si
conclude con un grande rogo in piazza.
SCHIGNANO
Schignano è un paesino della provincia di Como che
sorge a circa 650 metri di altitudine. Nella bella stagione è
la partenza ideale per escursioni a piedi, ma è conosciuto
soprattutto per il Carnevale. Per raggiungere Schignano da
Como, costeggiando la riva occidentale del lago, si imbocca
la statale 340 Regina che si percorre fino ad Argegno, dove
si imbocca la deviazione per Schignano.

SCHIGNANO
Schignano is a village in the Province of Como at a height of
650 metres asl. On a fine summer’s day it’s an ideal place
to start a walk from, but its real claim to fame is its Carneval.
To get to Schignano from Como along the western side of
the lake, you take the ‘Statale 340 Regina’ road as far as
Argegno where you turn off to Schignano.

più prestigiose abbinate a oggetti
unici, non comuni, destinati a chi il
bello lo apprezza e lo desidera. Tutto
ciò è Meda Immagine, di Luciano e
Giovanna Martinoli (nella foto) gioiello
incastonato nell’incantevole piazza
Castello, a Cernobbio, a un passo
dal lago, in un angolo nascosto che
apre il proprio splendore solo a chi
vuole cercare. Ed è questo il senso
dell’esposizione voluta dal titolare,
Luciano Martinoli.Un posto non visibile
a tutti, ma solo a chi vuole vedere l’arte
e ne comprende l’estetica e la qualità
degli oggetti. Meda Immagine però
ha voluto fare di più, aggiungendo
alle opere di illuminazione e dei
complementi di arredamenti: mobili,
vasi, poltrone, tutti lavorati con
professionalità artigianale e, soprattutto,
con i migliori materiali presenti sul mercato. «Noi ci rivolgiamo
alle persone che vogliono la qualità - dice Martinoli - Il Lago di
Como sta diventando anno dopo anno un punto di richiamo
per il turismo internazionale. Non solo Villa d’Este o Bellagio,
dunque, ma tutto il ramo di Como. Ci sono personaggi, non
solo stranieri, che comprano le splendide dimore del lago.
Abitazioni non comuni, che non possono essere arredate in
modo normale. Noi ci rivolgiamo a loro, a gente preparata al
bello, all’estetica e allo stile». L’anno di Meda Immagine non è
stato povero di soddisfazioni. «È stata una stagione piacevole -
prosegue Martinoli - in mezzo a persone che hanno apprezzato
la nostra professionalità. Abbiamo parlato con tanti italiani, ma
anche con turisti inglesi, tedeschi, belgi, interessati e preparati
alla cultura dello stile italiano, anche contemporaneo. I nostri
oggetti sono ideati e realizzati dai marchi più importanti al
mondo, da Baccarat a Lalique, da Flos a Barovier & Toso, da
Adele Cassina ai Cugini Lanzani a Fontana Arte». La chiusura
è per l’incantevole location dell’esposizione di Meda Immagine.
«Il centro storico di Cernobbio è splendido - conclude Martinoli
- viette e piazze in cui perdere gli occhi. Le potenzialità sono
incredibilmente alte per renderlo attraente anche per i turisti.
Noi stiamo dando in questo senso il nostro contributo».

Light becoming art. Highly
prestigious brand names associated
with unique, uncommon objects

is Meda Immagine (the company
set ub by Luciano and Giovanna
Martinoli, in the photo), a jewel
set in enchanting Piazza Castello
in Cernobbio, a stone’s throw from
the lake in a hidden nook which
will only reveal its splendour to
those seeking it. That’s what owner
Luciano Martinoli’s exhibition is all
about. Not somewhere conspicuous,
only visible to lovers of art who
understand his objects’ aesthetic
qualities. But Meda Immagine has
endeavoured to go further by adding
items for lighting and furnishings
accessories: furniture, vases and
armchairs, all professionally crafted and above all using
the best materials available. “We’re after people who love
quality”, says Martinoli. “Year after year Lake Como has
become an international tourist hot spot; not only Villa
d’Este or Bellagio but the whole Como branch of the lake.
Big names – and not just foreigners – are buying splendid
lakeside dwellings.These are very special homes which
cannot be furnished in the normal way. So people who
appreciate beauty, aesthetics and style are our target”.Meda
Immagine’s year has been rewarding. “It’s been a nice
season”, Martinoli goes on, “mixing with people who have
appreciated our professional approach. We’ve had dealings
with large numbers of Italians, but also with English, German
and Belgian holidaymakers interested in and familiar with
the culture of Italian style, also in its contemporary format.
Our articles are designed and produced by leading world
makers such as Baccarat, Lalique, Flos, Barovier & Toso,
Adele Cassina, Cugini Lanzani and Fontana Arte”. To round

“Cernobbio’s historic centre really is splendid”, concludes
Martinoli. “Little streets and squares to feast your eyes on.
It has incredible potential as a tourist attraction as well. We
