The month of April starts well for
those who love good food and good
wine. Easter is on the fourth. Four
days later, from April 8 to 12, Vinitaly, the
important wine trade fair, takes place in
Verona. You barely have time to finish
“sweetening your mouth” with Easter
chocolate, the so - called “food of the
gods”, and you are off to taste the
“nectar of the gods” at the highest of
levels. Liguria makes its presence felt by
showing up with its famous dessert
white, the sciacchetrà, symbol of the
In famiglia veniva chiamato refursà, cioè
“rinforzato” dall’appassimento. La denominazione
“sciacchetrà” deriva forse dal vocabolo
armeno shekar (bevanda alcolica) o
saccar (saccarosio). Fu comunque il grande
pittore macchiaiolo Telemaco Signorini a
chiamarlo così per la prima volta.
Quanto alle sue caratteristiche è un uvaggio
di bosco (40%), vermentino ed albarola. Rende
pochissimo: 25 litri per quintale di uva e
deve invecchiare per legge minimo 2 anni
prima di essere venduto.Il suo colore è ambrato
e profuma di fichi, albicocche mature, vaniglia
e spezie. Ha
un sapore dolce, ma mai
stucchevole, è sapido e
ben equilibrato. A Manarola
ha sede dal 1973
la Cooperativa Agricoltura
delle Cinque Terre,
263 soci vi conferiscono
le proprie uve (presidente
Matteo Bonanini). E’ nata
con lo scopo di salvaguardare
il vino dalle adulterazioni
e speculazioni.
Ma ci sono inoltre 15 piccoli
vignaioli indipendenti, alcuni
dei quali giovani (Giacomo Forlini
Cappellini, Walter De
Batté, Cesare Rimini e Piero
Corte, Capellini-Barani,
Cinque Terre. When the world’s leaders
met for the G8 conference in Aquila,
sciacchetrà was there. They sweetened
their discussions with wine from the
Società agraria Buranco di Monterosso di
Luigi Grillo.
“Sciacchetrà is an intrinsic part of Cinque
Terre family life” insists Walter De Batté
in Riomaggiore. The best known producer
of this exquisite passito wine, (made from
grapes left to dry on the vine), explains,
“tradition has it that when a child is born,
you immediately start putting aside his
wine ‘dowry’. Communions, marriages, on
every special occasion, a bottle would be
opened. It was also drunk to ward off
sickness, or to thank someone for a
favor.” In his family it was called
“reinforcement”, as it was reinforced by
its appassimento, (the drying technique
that adds alcoholic content to the wine).
The origins of the name derive perhaps
from shekar (alcoholic beverage) or
saccar (sugar). But they say that the great
painter, Telemaco Signorini, coined the
name “sciacchetrà”. 40% wild grape,
mixed with vermentino and albarola, it
takes a lot of grapes to make a little wine
- a tenth of a ton makes only 25 liters -
and it must legally be aged for a
minimum of 2 years before it can be sold.
Amber in color, its bouquet is of figs,
mature apricots, vanilla and spices. Sweet
but fulsome, it is savory and well -
balanced.
The Agricultural Coop founded in
Manarola in 1973 (president, Matteo
Bonanini) to protect the wine from
adulteration and speculation, now has
263 members. But there are also 15
independent producers, some of whom
are quite young (Giacomo Forlini
Cappellini, Walter De Batté, Cesare Rimini
and Piero Corte, Capellini-Barani, Maria
