La Divina Commedia fu senza modello e non ebbe ne ana imitatori.<br />

Tien oa' tempi in cui fu scritta Ie forze della barbarie che cessa, Ie gralie<br />

della civilta cbe comincia, e la vita di un mondo che si rinnovella. Dieooo<br />

saviamente cbe Omero Cu iI senso, Dante l' intelletto dell' umana<br />

sapienza. Egli dall'abisso levandosi al cielo non perde di vista la terra, e<br />

al santo scopo della civile rettitudine adoperando la parola come arma<br />

del potente suo ingegno, ti trasporta nelf altro secolo a contemplare Ie<br />

condizioni della vita mormle. La sua Musa penetra impavida nel regno<br />

delle ombre, e fa che queUe si riscuotano a maraviglia e terrore come<br />

nell' avvenimento del Cristo trionfante, e risentano ancora un palpito di<br />

vila alIa vista e aile parole potenli e passionate dell'uomo 'Vit'O che vi diseende<br />

: ritrae la speranza che fa eomportabile e dolce ftnanche iI dolorc<br />

Sll per 10 monte dell' espiazione: flcca sicura l' acume della sua vista en­<br />

Iro i piiJ gelosi e piu profondi misteri rivelati; s'innalza sublilne sopra il<br />
