Problemi di fondo
Devo confessare che il modo di
comportarci quali direttori di
fotografia lascia molto a
desiderare. I nostri discorsi
vertono sullo stile, sull'autore,
sull'autore dell'immagine, senza
preoccuparci di cosa è intorno a
noi.
Lo stile diviene fine a se stesso se
non ci si preoccupa
minimamente di quanto sta
succedendo nel mondo che ci
circonda. Il nostro lavoro deve
essere impostato su quanto sta
succedendo nel mondo, ad
esempio, l'apertura delle
frontiere che, è una realtà che ci
viene incontro e che influenzerà
in futuro, il nostro modo di
lavorare.
Per questo mi sorprende che noi
continuiamo a disinteressarci
dei problemi più generali, su
quanto succede in campo sociale
e politico, sulle trasformazioni
che ci sovrastano.
Ciò che non capisco sono gli
obiettivi che vogliamo
raggiungere come Associazione.
Parliamo sempre di problemi
che sfociano spesso in questioni
sindacali (senza peraltro
risolverle) e non su direttive di
fondo. Non sono d'accordo con
tale orientamento
dell'Associazione.
Penso ci si debba sì incontrare a
trattare dell'immagine. Ma
dell'immagine riferita al nostro
lavoro e capace di rappresentare
il mondo in cui viviamo.
Non vorrei essere tacciato di
presunzione affermando di
sentirmi in questo momento più
prossimo a Pasolini, che
affermava dover l'immagine
rappresentare lo sviluppo della
nostra società che non è certo
linda e disinfettata come uno
spot pubblicitario. Si parla a
vanvera di "stile", Ma cosa
significa lo stile? Nel mio caso, se
debbo fare un film, leggo il
copione, lo rileggo, cerco di
assimilarlo, e quindi azzardo una
fotografia che credo congeniale
alla storia. Ne parlo con l'autore,
espleto il mio lavoro, senza
divismi o presunzioni particolari.
A volte con successo, a volte
meno. Questo per me è il mio
lavoro. In sostanza vorrei capire
cosa si pretende dalle
discussioni della nostra
Associazione. Dove si vuole
arrivare.
Ad esempio, qualche anno fa,
non ricordo esattamente
quando, avevamo discusso la
necessità di far aprire a Cinecittà
un reparto ben organizzato per
gli effetti speciali, ed avevamo
segnalato un nostro
rappresentante a seguire e
indirizzare il programma.
Sembra Cinecittà non abbia
accettato tale proposta. Vorrei
fossero chiariti i motivi di tale
I must say I think the way we go about being Directors of Photography
leaves a lot to be desired. We discuss style, the film author, the author of
the image, but without bothering about what's going on around us.
Style becomes an end in itself, if one gives no thought to what's going on
in the world.
Qur work must relate to what's happening in the world. European
frontiers coming down, for example, which even if it leaves us indifferent,
m something that is about to become a reality and will influence our way
of working in the future. For this reason, it surprises me that we continue
to take no interest in the more general problems, in what is happening
socially and politically, and in impending changes.
What I would like to understand is where we're going as an Association.
We're always discussing problems, that often transform themselves into
union issues (without however resolving them), but neglect to establish
our basic aims as an Association.
I don't agree with the direction the Association is taking in this respect,
certainly think we should meet to discuss the image. But the image in
Precise relationship to our work and, above all, an image capable of
communicating the world in which we live.
' 'ion't wish to be thought presumptuous, but at this particular time I
must admit Ifeel closer to Pasolini who maintained that it was the
trnage's task to portray the evolution of our society, which is certainly not
the perfectly ordered and pristine world depicted in the T.V. commercials.
e talk about style, for style's sake. But what does style really mean?
Asfar as I'm concerned, if I have to do a film, I start by reading the script.
After which, Ire-read it, try to assimilate its meaning, and then work out
a concept for the photography that I believe suitable for the story. I discuss
! t ^th the film author, after which I carry out my work, without believing
rifiuto, perché non fu gradito
tale nome.
Tanto più che: 1° malgrado tutto,
gli effetti speciali a Cinecittà non
si possono fare, quantunque io
non mi sia mai cimentato in un
simile lavoro. 2° È stato allestito
un front-projection che, non
sembra funzionare, un
blue-screen che non si sa se
debba essere usato con l'aiuto di
inglesi o americani (sembra
adesso verranno anche i
giapponesi, dato che siamo
ormai terra di conquista).
Vorrei, ripeto, conoscere
l'atteggiamento in proposito di
Cinecittà, e quale è in generale
nei nostri confronti.
Ecco uno dei problemi che
vorrei fossero trattati, ed altri,
che si affrontano e poi si
lasciano a metà.
FRANCO
DI GIACOMO
"The jeweller's shop"
myself to be the director, or having any other particular pretension. Sometimes
the photography works really well, sometimes less so.
Asfar as I am concerned, this is what my work consists of. In short, I'd
like to know what we're trying to achieve with all our discussions? Where
are we heading as an Association? For example, a few years ago — I don't
remember exactly when — we discussed the necessity of setting up a
well-organized special effects department at Cinecittà, and we also
elected a representative to take charge of the project and follow it up.
It would seem that Cinecittà didn't accept our proposal I would like to
know exactly why, and why our representative wasn't welcomed.
All the more because: 1) In spite of the above, it is not possible to create
special effects at Cinecittà, although I personally have never had to
create them. 2) A front-projection has been set up that doesn't seem to
function, and a blue screen that will possibly have to be used with the
help of the English or Americans (it seems that the Japanese will also be
coming, as Italy has opened its doors to all and sundry).
I repeat, I would like to know what Cinecittà s position is regarding the
above and, more particularly, what their attitude is to our Association in
general.
This is one of the problems I would like to hear discussed at our meetings,
and all the others that we start to examine, and then give up on half-way
through.
