Mesi fa, sentendo parlare alcuni
giovani colleghi di elettronica e
altre invenzioni fantastiche, sono
rimasto sinceramente stupito
della loro competenza.
D'altronde è giusto così. Bisogna
vivere con i tempi, e i tempi ci
portano a fare più film
tecnicamente fantastici, grandi
colossi per lo più americani, film
che sbancano i botteghini. Penso
che per i giovani sia giusto
adeguarsi se si vuole
sopravvivere in questo mondo
dove la tecnica avanza e
schiaccia quelle che erano le
componenti dei nostri (vecchi)
film: poesia, amore, visione di
una realtà passata e dimenticata.

A few months ago, I heard some young colleagues discussing electronics
and other fantastic inventions, and I was sincerely amazed at how
well-informed they were. On the other hand, it's right that they should be.
One has to move with the times, and in these times, more and more films
are being made that are technically fantastic, incredibly spectacular,
mostly American and inevitably break all box-office records.
I think youngsters have to know how to adapt if they are going to survive
in a world where technology advances unrelentingly, sweeping aside the
vital ingredients of our past films: poetry and passion, a vision of a past
reality which has been forgotten
When I think of the magical times of René Clair, Rossellini, Visconti and
Frank Capra, I am filled with nostalgia and sadness. Who knows if films
will ever be made like "Ladri di biciclette", "La strada", "Sciuscià" and
all the many others? Who knows if the great masters of the Italian
Cinema of the past like Brizzi, Terzano, Arata and Montuori will look
nostalgia, ho pensato a quei
magici tempi: i tempi di René
Clair, di Rossellini, di Visconti e
di Frank Capra.
Chissà se si potranno più vedere
film come "Ladri di biciclette",
"La strada", "Sciuscià" e tanti
altri. Chissà se i nostri vecchi
grandi maestri di cinema, come
Brizzi, Terzano, Arata e
Montuori, sarebbero orgogliosi
di questi giovani colleghi che
sanno tutto sulle nuove tecniche
o se da lassù, con un sorrisetto
ironico, li compiangono, visto
che loro, solo loro, inventarono
il cinema vero. Quello che li
portava da pionieri a lavorare
divertendosi, inventando tutto
quello che era da inventare,
perché dopo di loro non si è più
inventato niente.
Il vecchio, caro romantico
cinema è sempre vivo e ne fanno
testo alcuni giovani registi
dell'ultima leva. E questo è
consolante.
Lasciamo alla televisione e ai
lodevoli produttori Americani,
Italiani, Francesi ecc... la Luna,
Marte, Mercurio, l'elettronica e
altre invenzioni. Ma lasciamo il
vecchio, caro, romantico cinema,
che ha tanto da insegnare e
niente da imparare, ai giovani di
buona volontà, che lo ameranno
come lo abbiamo amato e lo
amiamo ancora, noi, giovanotti
antichi forse un po' troppo
romantici.

pride, or whether they will smile a little ironically, pitying them, as they
themselves were the only ones who created real Cinema? They were the
pioneers of Cinema that they enjoyed creating, inventing everything
there was to invent — as no one invented anything after them. The dearly,
beloved and romantic Cinema is still alive, and the films of some of the
new young directors are proof of this. This is certainly a consolation.
Let's leave the Moon, Mars, Mercury, electronics and other inventions to
television and all those commendable producers, whether they be
American, Italian, French etc. But let's leave the dearly beloved, and'
romantic Cinema, which has nothing to learn yet can teach so much, to
the youngsters who want to create that same kind of Cinema, who will
love it as we have done, and still do. We "youngsters" who still abide by
old-fashioned values, and who are perhaps a little too romantic for these
modern times.
