curatore nell'introduzione
chiede lumi e informazioni onde
preparare in futuro un'edizione
corretta e accresciuta. Forse egli
dovrebbe affidarsi alle
associazioni professionali del
nostro paese per aggiornare un
lavoro talmente
onnicomprensivo.
Questa prima guida alle carriere
di autori della fotografia,
scenografi, costumisti e
montatori, è modellata
sull'esempio ormai consolidato
della Film Directors Guide — un
utilissimo annuario dei registi di
tutto il mondo, edito dalla stessa
casa. Pur fornendo di ciascun
cineasta la filmografia
aggiornata, la curatrice non si è
preoccupata di ritrovare i titoli
originali, nei rari casi in cui
compaia un autore non
americano, come ad esempio
Giuseppe Ruzzolini o Vittorio
Storaro, né tantomeno gli
indirizzi, o i nomi degli agenti
rispettivi. Auguriamoci che le
prossime edizioni di questa
guida contengano maggiori dati
utili per chi la consulta così
come per chi vi viene incluso.
Segnaliamo inoltre che lo stesso
editore ha pubblicato nella
stessa collana anche altre due
guide analoghe: quella agli
sceneggiatori e quella al
produttori cinematografici.
Nestor Almendros, "NESTOR
ALMENDROS DIRETTORE
DELLA FOTOGRAFIA", Istituto
Cinematografico dell'Aquila (La
Lanterna Magica, Via San
Martino 3, 67100 L'Aquila, Italia)
1988, 352 p., numerose
illustrazioni a colori e in bianco
e nero.
In occasione degli ultimi incontri
internazionali dell'Aquila,
l'Istituto fondato da Gabriele
Lucci ha permesso a Nestor
Almendros di sviluppare e
ampliare le sue memorie — già
note agli appassionati
nell'edizione inglese e in quella
francese. Il volume gigante che
ne è scaturito è uno dei più
affascinanti, e meglio stampati,
tra quelli editi in Italia da molti
anni a questa parte. Aperta da
una prefazione dell'amico devoto
Francois Truffaut — che compara
le luci di Almendros con quelle
di Billy Bitzer, il collaboratore di
D.W. Griffith —, l'autobiografia
parte da alcune considerazioni
generali sulla professione del
direttore della fotografia, che
potrebbero (come altri capitoli
del libro) fungere da lezioni
esemplari. Con uno spirito
umanistico e un sottile humour,
Almendros ripercorre gli anni
giovanili trascorsi al Centro
Sperimentale di Cinematografia
di Roma. Poi rievoca il periodo
fervido di promesse e di
delusioni della rivoluzione
cubana, quindi passa a
descrivere come conobbe e
lavorò con i profeti della
nouvelle-vague parigina, Eric
Rohmer, Truffaut, Jean
Eustache. Le illustrazioni,
riprodotte mirabilmente in
colori spesso assai fedeli a quelli
del film al quale si riferiscono,
by the same Company. Even though Ms. Bales has supplied an up-to-date
jilmography of each cineaste, she hasn't bothered to give original titles,
m the rare cases that a foreign Cinematographer appears like Giuseppe
Ruzzolini or Vittorio Storaro, neither does she supply addresses or agent's
names. Let's hope that future editions of this guide provide more useful
information for those who consult it, which will also benefit the people
included in it. The above Publishers have also brought out two related
guides, on Scriptwriters and Film Producers.
NESTOR ALMENDROS DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY" by Nestor
Almendros. Published by the Istituto Cinematografico dell'Aquila (La
Lanterna Magica, Via San Martino 3, L'Aquila 67100 Italy) 1988. 352
Pages, with numerous illustrations in colour and black & white.
On the occasion of the last International Cinema meeting held in
- Aquila in Italy, the Cinematographic Institute founded by Gabriele
Lucci, published the above volume, thus giving Nestor Almendros the
chance to add to his memoirs — which his fans have already been able to
read in the English and French editions. The "coffee table" volume that
resulted, is one of the most fascinating and superbly printed books that
has been published in Italy for some years. The autobiography opens with
an introduction by Francois Truffaut, a devoted friend of Almendros —
who compares his talent for lighting to that of D.W. Griffith's collaborator,
Billy Bitzer — and then, continues with some general considerations
about the Director of Photography's profession which, like a number of
other chapters in the book, would make very good lessons.
Next, Almendros recalls, with a lot of warmth, and a nice sense of
permettono di osservare come si
sviluppa il discorso figurativo
dell'autore. Passato
temporaneamente negli Stati
Uniti, egli vi collabora con autori
del tutto eterodossi, come Monte
Hellmann, Jack Nicholson e
Terence Malik — vincendo l'Oscar
per la migliore fotografia nel
1978 per Days of Heaven - I
giorni del cielo. L'amorosa
attenzione verso il paesaggio,
l'eccellente utilizzo delle luci
naturali, si approfondiscono
ancora nella sua collaborazione
con Randal Kleiser e Robert
Benton. La passione per il bianco
e nero trova un apice in
Vivement dimanche!
(Finalmente domenica!),
l'ultima opera diretta da
Truffaut. Almendros non
trascura di parlare delle sue
esperienze nel campo del film
pubblicitario, e fornisce inoltre
un piccolo, succosissimo trattato
sulla fotogenia dei divi e delle
dive. Negli ultimi anni egli si è
dedicato al documentarismo
politico, dirigendo due
reportages sulle degenerazioni
del regime castrista. Il volume si
conclude con tante foto
collettive delle troupe, scattate
sui diversi set, con una
dettagliata filmografia, con un
prezioso glossario dei termini
tecnici, e con un indice dei nomi
e dei film citati. Una lettura
indispensabile e indimenticabile.
humour, his 'formative" years at the "Centro Sperimentale di
Cinematografia" in Rome. He remembers the period of the Cuban
revolution, with all its promises and disappointments. And then goes on
to recount how he came to meet, and work with Truffaut, Eric Rohmer
and Jean Eustace, the leaders of the Noùvelle Vagite in Paris. The
reproduction of the photographs in the book is excellent and, in most
cases, they are extremely faithful to the original colour tones of the films
from which they have been taken, thus permitting one to study the
evolution of Almendros'figurative expression.
Having temporarily made his home in the USA, Almendros has
collaborated with people as different as Monte Hellmann, Jack Nicholson
and Terence Malick — winning an Oscar for "Days of Heaven" in 1978.
His great feeling for, and attention to, the landscape, and his excellent
use of natural lighting, have been refined even further by his
collaboration with Randal Kleiser and Robert Benton. His enthusiasm
and talent for black & white photography reaches its height in "Vivement
Dimanche", the last film directed by Truffaut.
This great Director of Photography also recounts his experiences in
filming T.V. commercials, and includes a juicy little chapter on film
stars and how photogenic they really are!
During the last few years, Almendros has dedicated his talents to the
political documentary, directing two "reportages" on the deterioration of
the Castro regime. The last part of the autobiography contains a great
many group photos taken with the crews on different sets, a detailed
filmography, an invaluable glossary of technical terms, and an index of
the names and films mentioried. It is essential reading for anyone
interested in Cinema, and absolutely unforgettable!
