Segundo de Chomón
(1871-1929) fu uno degli
inventori dei trucchi
cinematografici, in concorrenza
con Méliès. Moltissimi dei suoi
circa 500 film sono andati
perduti, ma lo studioso Juan
Gabriel Tharrats li ricorda uno
per uno, in ordine cronologico,
descrivendo di ciascuno le
caratteristiche tematiche e le
tecniche espressive. Tra il 1901 e
il 1905, Segundo de Chomón,
discendente di una nobile
famiglia spagnola, creò a
Barcellona per la Pathé una
serie di film favolistici colorati a
mano e basati su improvvise
metamorfosi dei personaggi.
Negli anni successivi passò a
Parigi e vi realizzò pellicole
fantasmagoriche, con
animazioni, sovrapposizioni e
altri effetti. Dopo un ritorno in
Spagna, De Chomón lavorò a
Torino per la Itala Film, tra il
1912 e il 1919, e collaborò tra
l'altro alle comiche di Cretinetti
(André Deed), e alle ingegnose
maquettes per Cabiria.
Nell'ultimo decennio della sua
vita viaggiò ancora tra Francia,
Italia e Spagna, richiestissimo
come inventore di trucchi (fu
anche sul set di Napoléon di
Abel Gance). Inserita nell'epoca
one of them in this book, in chronological order, describing the main
themes and the techniques with which they were expressed. Between 1901
and 1905, Segundo De Chomón created, for Pathé in Barcelona, a series of
films that recounted fairytales, which were hand-coloured, and the main
feature of which was the sudden metamorphosis of the characters. He
subsequently went to work in Paris, where he created truly
phantasmagoric films, using special effects, animation and
superimosing images. After returning to Spain for a while, he worked for
Itala Film in Turin between 1912 and 1919, where he collaborated on the
"Cretinetti" comedies (André Deed) and other projects, and worked on
the ingenious maquettes for "Cabiria". Chomón spent the last ten years of
his life travelling between Spain, France and Italy, where he was in great
demand as an inventor of special effects (he also worked on Abel Gance's
"Napoleon"). As one of the pioneers of an era when filmmaking was a
real adventure, Segundo De Chomón's life story would make a
fascinating film.. However, Juan Gabriel Tharrats beat everyone to it in
1979, making a full-length film, part-documentary, part-fiction, entitled:
"Cinematografo 1900 - Homenaje a Segundo de Chomón".
"DIRECTORS OF PHOTOGRAPHY, PRODUCTION DESIGNERS AND SET
DESIGNERS IN THE ITALIAN CINEMA", compiled by Eberhard Spiess.
The International Federation of Film Archives has been compiling, for a
number of years now, afilmography of world cinema in several volumes,
divided up into countries and categories. This second tome, compiled by
avventurosa del cinema delle
origini, la vicenda di Segundo de
Chomón si presterebbe per
un'avvincente biografia filmica...
Ma ci aveva già pensato nel 1979
lo stesso Juan Gabriel Tharrats,
dirigendo il lungometraggio di
montaggio e di finzione
La Federazione Internazionale
degli Archivi Filmici sta
coordinando da alcuni anni la
pubblicazione in più volumi della
filmografia universale, suddivisa
per categorie e per paesi. In
questo settimo tomo lo storico
tedesco Eberhard Spiess riporta
1214 filmografie di altrettanti
autori della fotografia, scenografi
e costumisti italiani, dalle origini
al 1986. L'impresa è
estremamente ambiziosa, e si
basa perlopiù su riviste e
pubblicazioni d'epoca. Di ogni
cineasta elencato in ordine
alfabetico vengono indicati i film
nell'ordine cronologico, con
accanto, tra parentesi, il nome
del regista di ciascun titolo.
Mancano le date di nascita,
mancano le distinzioni tra le
funzioni di aiuto operatore,
operatore, assistente. L'ordine
alfabetico non viene rispettato
troppo rigorosamente, per cui ad
esempio Giuseppe Rotunno
viene prima di Mario Romano.
Molti titoli risultano storpiati o
incompleti. Ma si tratta di una
sistemazione provvisoria, e il
Eberhard Spiess, the German Cinema historian, includes the
filmographies of no less than 1214 Italian photographic authors,
production designers and costume designers, going right back to the
beginning of Cinema and up until 1986. It is an extremely ambitious
undertaking, and most of the information has been taken from
magazines and other publications from previous eras. The name of each
cineaste is listed in alphabetical order, and the films in chronological
order, with the name of the director beside each one. However, no birth
dates etc. are given, and no distinction is made between the functions of
a cameraman, focus puller, and second assistant cameraman. The
alphabetical order is sometimes a bit haphazard with, for example,
Giuseppe Rotunno being listed before Mario Romano. And many of the
titles are inaccurate or incomplete. However, it is only a temporary
listing and, in the introduction, Eberhard Speiss welcomes any
information or comment that will enlighten him, and enable him to
compile a more correct and comprehensive final edition. Perhaps he
should approach our professional cinema associations for help with such
an all-comprehending task.
