AIC
creduto per ottenere un
particolare risultato e una certa
qualità, non deve in seguito
costringere questo
professionista a fare una
battaglia per difendere la qualità
stessa! Non tanto all'atto della
creazione, ma durante il viaggio
che le immagini compiono
attraverso le macchine di
sviluppo e stampa, i proiettori,
ecc., fino al trasferimento
elettronico, dove ancora è
necessario il nostro controllo.
Per esempio, mentre mi trovavo
in uno studio televisivo ho
sentito una musica familiare,
attirato dalla quale sono entrato
in uno stanzino dove si stava
trascrivendo in un blu
intensissimo col telecinema un
film, da me girato qualche anno
prima con Fellini. Ed ho
scoperto che stavano lavorando
su di una copia bianco e nero e
l'avevano portata al blu intenso
per ottenere un maggior
contrasto e un miglior passaggio
all'elettronico bianco e nero.
Come per il bianco e nero, lo
stesso stavano facendo per il
colore. Se il caso non voleva che
io fossi là e avessi telefonato
subito alla Direzione della RAI e
a Fellini che mi aiutò a bloccare
tutto in attesa di una copia a
colori, il lavoro sarebbe stato
inviato in onda in quelle
condizioni.
Io affermo che non hanno
nessun diritto ad operare in tal
modo. Non deve essere
necessaria la stima verso di me o
di Fellini, né l'intervento di
Fellini stesso! Se avessimo il
diritto di essere interpellati e si
richiedesse il nostro giudizio
sull'uso del nostro lavoro, non
potrebbero scaturire che
innegabili vantaggi soprattutto
per produttori e distributori.
Finora non abbiamo ottenuto
questi diritti a causa soprattutto
dell'ignoranza, poiché
l'ignoranza provoca sempre
sospetti e dubbi per qualsiasi
tipo di iniziativa.
Credo oggi questa mentalità
dovrebbe essere superata, sia in
campo finanziario che in quello
politico. Anni fa siamo stati
ricevuti da una commissione (o
sottocommissione, non so di
preciso) parlamentare a
Montecitorio. "Quanti siete?" ci
fu chiesto. Noi abbiamo risposto
esagerando: "Tre/quattrocento!"
"Siete troppo pochi per
smuovere l'interesse politico!
Sono troppo pochi voti!"
Penso che oggi, anche a livello di
sottocommissioni, il nostro
Parlamento questa mentalità
dovrebbe averla superata. Perché
la qualità difesa dalla volontà
anche di pochi vuol dire rispetto
verso molti. Vuol dire una
ricchezza che non è denaro:
anche perché non costa niente,
si può dire, ma è solo questione
di volontà. Perché raggiungere
nel cinema una migliore
proiezione non comporta
maggiore spesa. E solo un modo
di concepire il lavoro in senso
professionale e che non grava
molto finanziariamente. Ho visto
molti tentativi in tal senso con
rimodernamenti di tutto, le sedie
e anche la proiezione: ma vi sono
ancora tante sale dove nella
proiezione la luce che arriva
sullo schermo è inferiore al
quoziente necessario a far
godere del film nelle condizioni
normali. "Il barone di
Munchhausen" ad esempio, si
può ascoltare alT'Empire", e
have been broadcast in that condition. I insist that they have no right to
carry out operations of this kind. It should not have been necessary to
exploit the esteem with which Fellini and myself are regarded in order to
stop that transcription, neither should Fellini have had to intervene
Personally! If we had the right to be called in and were consulted as to
how our work was to be exploited, it could only be extremely
advantageous, especially to producers and distributors.
Up until now, we have been prevented from obtaining the above rights by
tgnorance, and it is ignorance which clouds any new undertaking with
doubt and suspicion.
However, I think that ignorance is a thing of the past today, both in the
field. of finance and politics. Some years ago, a group of us were received
by a government commission (or sub-commission, I'm not exactly sure)
at "Montecitorio".
How many are you?" we were asked. "Three or four hundred!" we replied,
bumping up the numbers. "Too few to stimulate political interest! Too few
votes!" I think that ignorance is also a thing of the past asfar as
government subcommissions are concerned. Because quality, defended
by the few, means respect towards many. It means a richness which has
nothing to do with money: also because it doesn't cost anything, so to
sPeak, but is achieved with willpower. For example, improving the
Projection of a film in the cinema involves very little expense. It just
means adopting a professional attitude towards one's work, which doesn't
cost anybody a great deal of money. I've seen a lot of effort being made in
this direction, with cinemas being completely modernized, new
seating and more sophisticated projectors being installed: however, there
are still very many cinemas where the degree of luminosity on the screen
during the projection of a film is below the required standard, and the
vedere al "Gregory". Non si
possono avere entrambe le cose
in uno solo di questi
cinematografi.
Quanto ai progetti di creare
circuiti con proiezioni di tipo
elettronico, penso che il cinema
vada rispettato per quello che è,
e come è vada accettato. E se
oggi non è accettato più perché
ha
fatto il suo tempo, questo non
sta a me dirlo!
Il cinema è fondamentalmente
fotografia perché nasce con la
ripresa su materiale sensibile
operata dal "cameraman", come
10 chiamavano allora. C'era solo
11 problema di "far vedere", di
riprodurre l'immagine reale.
Prendiamone ad esempio una
delle più famose: la locomotiva di
Lumière che dava di per sé
stessa emozione e interesse.
Si è quindi sentita la necessità di
creare il racconto, di scriverlo
prima, non riproducendo un
avvenimento così com'era, ma
inventando le immagini in
ragione del racconto, con la
sceneggiatura. Da ciò si è
prospettata la necessità di fare il
cinema, oltre che con un
direttore di fotografia, anche con
un regista.
Certo l'elettronica ha un suo
mondo, un suo sistema
decisamente diverso da quello
cinematografico.
Ma se non si nota la differenza
tra cinema e mezzo elettronico,
significa che non si conosce il
cinema!
film cannot, therefore, be enjoyed as it should be. For example, "The
Baron of Munchausen" is best seen at the "Gregory" in Rome, and heard
at the "Empire"! It is impossible to have both things in either of these
cinemas.
Asfar as projects to create cinema circuits in which films urill be
projected electronically are concerned, I believe that the Cinema should
be respected for what it is, and accepted as such
And if the Cinema is no longer accepted today because it has lived its
time, this is not for me to say!
Cinema is essentially photography, because it is created by the recording
of images on light sensitive material, effected by a "cameraman " — as the
director of photography was once called.
In those days, it was merely a question of reproducing a real image, of
"showing" it to people. Let's take, for example, one of the most famous
images: Lumière's locomotive, which stimulated both interest and
emotion far what it was.
The need was then felt to go beyond showing an event as it was, to invent
a story, writing it beforehand and inventing the appropriate images in a
script. This made it necessary to have a director, as well as a director of
photography, to create the film
Certainly, electronics is a world of its own, a system completely different
to that used to create cinema
And if one can't perceive the difference between Cinema and electronics,
it means that one doesn't really know what cinema is!
