alcuni provini ad attori e attrici,
comincia la parte più delicata del
film: la lavorazione.
Tale lavorazione assorbe per un
certo numero di settimane
moltissime persone della troupe
(attori, tecnici, maestranze, ecc.)
e quindi, come si può intuire,
con un enorme sforzo
finanziario da parte del
produttore. Da questa situazione
si crea il film! È necessario
quindi, soprattutto per alcuni di
noi, avere le idee molto chiare e i
nervi ben saldi: cercare di
isolarsi da quel clima che
naturalmente si crea quando
molte persone si trovano a vivere
insieme. Estraniarsi da quei
problemi che sono di varia
natura e cercare di rimanere
sereni per poter mandare avanti
il proprio discorso creativo.
Ebbene, credo proprio che
questo sia il momento più
difficile del film, superato il
quale (a questo punto credo di
poter usare il termine) "noi
autori della fotografia" abbiamo
quasi finito il nostro lavoro.
Rimane soltanto da seguire la
stampa finale della copia del film
che avverrà appunto dopo che il
film sarà montato, doppiato e
dopo che il musicista avrà
composto la musica.
Vorrei poter dire due parole
ancora per completare il
discorso sulla fotografia. Prima
ho detto che, finita la fase della
lavorazione sul set (ambienti
dove si snoda la storia) noi
direttori di fotografia abbiamo
finito il nostro lavoro. Infatti è
nata "la fotografia del film", col
suo stile, i suoi pregi e i suoi
difetti. Poco può essere mutato
poi, in fase di stampa, quando
ormai i giochi sono fatti. Si può
correggere la cromaticità delle
immagini per meglio equilibrarle
ed adattarle all'atmosfera della
storia. Ma quel che si è costruito
in ragione della luce non si può
più cambiare ed influenzerà
tutta la pellicola e lo stesso
contenuto del racconto.
Per questo è molto importante la
fase della ripresa. La fotografia
particular photographic style. I would have liked to have gone mare
deeply into the relationship between the Set Designer and the Director of
Photography, which is fundamental in creating the film's form, but I will
content myself with saying that we Directors of Photography often
experience difficulties in lighting certain locations and creating the
"-ppropriate atmosphere, because we don't have the possibility of placing
the lighting exactly where we would like to.
Anyway, once we are through the preparational phase during which the
locations are, in fact, chosen,; once we've read the script and discussed
cur ideas for the photography with the Director; and once we've done
various film tests with the actors and actresses, we embark on the most
tricky phase of all the shooting of the film
The shooting occupies the majority of the crew (actors, technicians,
skilled workers etc.) for a number of weeks, so you can imagine what
kind of financial commitment the Producer has to make! Naturally, there
is confusion, and it is from this confusion that the film has to be created!
ft is, therefore, essential that at least some of us have a very clear idea of
what we're doing, and very steady nerves; staying out of the conflicts that
arise when a lot of people find themselves having to live together for a
number of weeks. Keeping away from the various problems, and
remaining calm in order to be able to concentrate on the realization of
the photographic concept we have evolved for the film. Well, I honestly feel
that this is the most difficult phase in filmmaking and, when it is over,
we "photographic authors" (I think I am perfectly justified in using the
term at this point) have almost finished our work. All that remains for us
to do, is supervise the final striking of the print, which is effected after the
rnusic has been composed, and the film has been edited and dubbed
Adjust like to finish up by saying a couple more things about the
da sola è il film nelle luci e nelle
ombre. È una realtà che deve
essere sempre discreta, mai
troppo presente. È comunque la
parte vitale del film che è
espresso per immagini, immagini
che suggestionano e avvincono
lo spettatore costringedolo a
sognare un mondo (storia) al
quale vorrebbe appartenere o dal
quale starsene lontano.
photography. I said earlier that when shooting finishes on the set (the
various locations in which the story unfolds) the Director of
Photography's work is over. At that point, in fact, the photography has
been created, with its particular style, its merits and defects. Very little
can be changed during the final printing: what's done, is done! One can
correct the chromaticity of the images, to achieve a finer balance and
render them more harmonious with the feeling of the film, but no more.
One cannot change what one has created with the light, and it will not
only affect the entire film, but also ivhat it expresses.
The shooting phase, therefore, is extremely important The photography is
the film expressed in light and shadow. It must always be subtle, never
too intrusive. It is, however, the vital essence of the film, communicated
with images, images which influence and fascinate the cinemagoers,
permitting them to identify with a world (the story) which they can
either fantasise being part of or reject
