Documentare
l'Europa
In Italia, come cavallette
impazzite, da più parti arrivano
proposte e controproposte;
alcune stabili, altre transitorie.
Siamo assillati dalla scadenza
europea. E la fretta, si sa, è
cattiva consigliera: di molti sogni
fa un mucchio confuso, di
troppe realtà un terreno
abbandonato. Ad esempio,
nessuno si azzarda a difendere
un "genere" cinematografico che
dovrebbe invece, essere una
delle bandiere più prestigiose del
nostro Paese: il "documentario
d'arte". Mi si dirà che le arti
figurative ormai stanno bene
dove il consumismo televisivo le
ha ghettizzate, ossia negli spazi
di tardissima serata, tra l'una e le
due di notte. In Italia, dopo
l'esordio magistrale di Luciano
Emmer, il cosiddetto
documentario d'arte è stato
avvilito, e più di una volta messo
al bando. Perché nessuno ha
saputo scorgere, o intuire, su
questa linea una vocazione
italiana. Sarebbe tutto da
reinventare questo settore,
divulgando nel mondo, quasi
capillarmente, i vari aspetti del
nostro patrimonio artistico,
come da anni si adopera con
grande successo nel settore del
documentario scientifico la
B.B.C. Spesso mi chiedo: "questo
disinteresse non sarà, in ultima
analisi, alimentato anche da noi
Direttori della fotografia,
considerando questo settore
quasi un ripiego o un'opera
minore?". Come si sa, niente è
minore se espresso con un
linguaggio adeguato, pregnante,
e teso a ridare lungo un discorso
critico la verità poetica di questo
o quell'artista. Davanti a
un'opera d'arte, l'intervento del
Direttore della fotografia diventa
quello di un prezioso,
indispensabile "traduttore
simultaneo" tra l'autore
dell'opera e il regista. La
traduzione è la luce. Perché il
Direttore della fotografia deve
introdurre tra le luci già
predisposte dall'autore — luci
pergamene nuove. Sicché la
natura dell'opera è rispettata,
anche se la calligrafia — la luce —
è diversa di volta in volta, e
proprio per naturale coerenza
verso questo o quel mondo
poetico. È una avventura
affascinante, ricca di suggestioni,
propensa ai suggerimenti, questa
discesa al centro di un'opera
d'arte, e stimolante in ogni suo
aspetto. Inoltre, provvista com'è
Proposals are coming at us from all sides in Italy, at the moment, some of
which are taken up, others which are discarded. We're all feeling the
pressure of the European deadline. However, as the proverb says: "More
haste, less speed". And too much haste can reduce dreams to a confused
heap, turn a number of real possibilities into fruitless ventures. For
example, no one is taking the time right now, to defend a
cinematographic "genre" which should, by rights, be one of Italy's most
prestigious showcases: the "Art Documentary". It will be said that "The
Arts" are perfectly all right where television's consumer programming
has relegated them; ie., to being shown at 1.00 or 2.00 a.m. in the
morning. After Luciano Emmer's masterly debut, the "Art Documentary"
has been treated with very little respect in Italy, and sometimes actually
banned! Simply because no one has been able to see it as a possible
Italian vocation!
A whole new approach could be applied in this area, and our great
artistic heritage communicated the world over with the same intense
coverage enjoyed by the B.B.C, 's scientific documentaries, which are such
a tremendous success. I often ask myself: "In the last analysis, aren't we
Directors of Photography partly to blame for the above situation, by our
considering the Art Documentary either as merely an expedient, or a
minor work?" However, no work is "minor", if it is expressed with the
right language, one that is rich and full, and aimed at communicating
the poetic truth of various artists through a profound critical analysis of
their work. When filming a work of art, the Director of Photography
becomes a valuable and indispensible "simultaneous translator" who
communicates the artist to the director. The light is the translation.
Because the Director of Photography creates a bridge of light which links
the various "lights" already created by the artist — lights of the soul, the
di innumerevoli trabocchetti,
permette anche un largo
margine di sperimentazione.
Perché allora trascurare questo
settore, perché non
sensibilizzare a suo favore la
produzione nazionale proprio in
vista della scadenza europea?
Rispetto agli altri paesi del
Vecchio Mondo il nostro
patrimonio artistico è lasciato in
balìa di opposti pareri, e la sua
immagine ne soffre. Un rilancio
del documentario d'arte italiano
— in una prospettiva europea e
internazionale — è auspicabile
perché anch'esso è cinema.
Università"
shades of light in perspective, "psychological" lights — and reveals the
most significant aspects of the artist's style.
It is not, however, a question of reinterpreting a canvas or piece of
sculpture, but transcribing it, like amanuenses transcribed ancient texts
onto new parchment.
In this way, the essential nature of the work of art is respected, even if the
"writing" — the light — differs each time, in order to communicate each
poetic world to the full. This journey to the heart of a work of art is a
fascinating adventure, which exposes one to many different influences,
inspires and is stimulating in every possible way. Besides this, it is also
full of pitfalls, and so one has to experiment constantly to avoid them.
So, why ignore the Art Documentary? Why don't we remind Italian
producers that it exists as the European deadline approaches? Our
artistic heritage, unlike that of all the other countries that are part of the
"Old World ", finds itself at the m^rcy of conflicting opinions and,
naturally, its image suffers. The Italian Art Documentary should be
re-launched on both a national and international level because it, too, is
Cinema.
