Il CERCHIO
"Io Peter Pan"
cinema italiano
non ha modelli
Facendo delle passeggiate,
durante alcune lunghe attese,
viaggiando, mi capita spesso di
riflettere sul mio lavoro, sul
cinema. In quelle occasioni mi
vengono in mente molte idee che
mi piacerebbe confrontare con
altri, con i miei colleghi.
Un pensiero ricorrente riguarda
il rapporto tra il cinema italiano
e quello americano. Penso
sarebbe giusto ricominciare a
pensare il nostro cinema in
maniera autonoma, senza
riferirci sempre al cinema
hollywoodiano che per
moltissimi motivi è inimitabile.
A mio avviso è sbagliato cercare
di organizzare la nostra
produzione sul modello
americano. Noi, io penso,
avremmo bisogno di elaborare
un nostro sistema originale di
organizzare la produzione dei
nostri film, per consentire agli
autori di realizzare i propri
soggetti nel migliore dei modi, e
consentire loro di sviluppare
anche una ricerca di un nuovo
linguaggio cinematografico che
utilizzi meglio le potenzialità di
questo mezzo. Il cinema che
facciamo noi oggi sembra un
cinema letterario dove la
sceneggiatura ha un peso
enorme, dove non si sfruttano
tutte le potenzialità espressive
del cinematografo. Sul set ci si
limita a filmare tutto ciò che è
While going for a walk, on long waits during shooting, or when I'm
travelling, I often find myself thinking about my work, or the Cinema
On these occasions, a lot of ideas come to me that I'd like to discuss with
other Cinema people, with my colleagues.
I continually think about the relationship between the Italian and
American Cinema. And I believe it's time we started seeing our Cinema
in a more independent light, without feeling obliged to use the films that
Hollywood produces as models which, for a number of reasons, cannot
really be imitated.
In my opinion, it's a mistake to try and organize our productions on
American lines. I think we need to organize them differently, and work
out a new system that would allow film authors to realize their stories in
the best possible way, and permit them to create a new cinematographic
language which would exploit the Cinema's potential more effectively.
The Cinema created in Italy, today, seems to be more "literary" than
anything, in that undue importance is given to the script, resulting in
the expressive potential of the Cinema not being developed to the full We
limit ourselves to filming exactly what is written, the way it's written. In
other words, we film "theatre", with fabulous scenery and magical
lighting. This thought has hounded me for years, and it is this that has
pushed me to work on low-budget — sometimes very low-budget —films.
What interests and stimulates me most about these productions, is the
possibility of trying to find alternative ways of organizing a film crew
and evolving new shooting methods. Also, the possibility of establishing to
what extent modern techniques can help us keep costs down, not so that
we might earn more, but to enable us to use our time more creatively. If
we keep costs down, it also means that we can mount productions that
don't need the backing of big financial groups, which often impose
scritto e come è scritto.
Facciamo insomma, con degli
scenari bellissimi, luci magiche,
del teatro filmato. Quest'idea mi
insegue da molti anni, ed è la
molla che mi spinge ad accettare
di collaborare alla realizzazione
di film a basso e bassissimo
costo. Ciò che mi interessa e mi
stimola maggiormente in questo
tipo di produzioni è verificare se
vi sono modi alternativi di
organizzare una troupe, modi
diversi dal modello industriale e
commerciale di girare un film.
Verificare fino a che punto le
moderne tecniche possono
aiutarci a contenere i costi, non
per aumentare i guadagni, ma
per consentirci di utilizzare il
tempo in maniera creativa.
Contenere i costi può significare
anche avviare una produzione
che non ha bisogno dei
finanziamenti dei grandi gruppi
che spesso finiscono per
imporre tempi e modi di
produzione.
Devo ammettere, tuttavia, che
fino ad oggi anche i film a
bassissimo costo che ho
realizzato, alcuni dei quali sono,
secondo me, dei buoni film, sono
stati girati nella maniera più
tradizionale e classica del
cinema commerciale; solo con
meno mezzi e tante difficoltà in
più.
E chiaro che per portare
veramente avanti un progetto di
rinnovamento, per operare dei
cambiamenti nel modo di
produrre è necessario che tutti i
settori che concorrono alla
realizzazione di un film,
produttori, artisti, tecnici e
maestranze, si confrontino per
trovare delle soluzioni originali.
Il nostro cinema deve
ristrutturarsi, secondo me, se
vuole contrastare la concorrenza
delle innumerevoli nuove forme
di spettacolo e divertimento che
sono nate e si sono sviluppate
negli ultimi anni; vedi televisione,
calcio, spettacoli sportivi,
concerti, discoteche, viaggi
organizzati ecc. In più bisogna
aggiungere il cinema americano
che con le sue megaproduzioni
ci sottrae una gran quantità di
pubblico.
Non vedo però, da nessuno,
alcun tentativo di analizzare il
nostro modo di produrre film
per eventualmente poter operare
quei cambiamenti che
potrebbero rivitalizzare il nostro
cinema.
Sento sempre più spesso, invece,
questo riferirsi e ispirarsi a
modelli americani, dimenticando
che il cinema italiano conosciuto
nel mondo non assomiglia
assolutamente a quel modello.
deadlines and actual production methods.
In spite of this, I have to admit that even the low-budget films I've
collaborated on up until now — some of which I consider to be good films —
were shot using typical commercial shooting methods, except that we had
less equipment and encountered a greater number of difficulties.
It is obvious that in order to change current production methods and
establish new ones, the various categories that collaborate on the
realization of a film — producers, the different artists, technicians and
skilled workers — must meet and discuss the problems involved.
According to me, the Italian Cinema has to be restructured if it is going
to able to sustain the competition from the many forms of entertainment
etc., that have been brightening up our lives for the last few decades; ie.
television, football, sporting events in general, concerts, discotheques,
organized travel etc. Not to mention the American Cinema with its
spectacular films that lure away a big slice of our market
However, I have not yet seen anyone attempting to analyse our
production methods, in order to eventually be able to revitalize our
Cinema. More and more often, I hear people speaking of the American
Cinema as an ideal model and source of inspiration. They seem to have
forgotten that the Italian Cinema is famous worldwide, and is about as
similar to its American counterpart as the Italian cuisine is to junk food!
