Contribuì a questo una nuova
arte che per puro caso mi si
presentò: la fotografia! Avevo
allora 15 anni. Capitò al mio
paese un fotografo ambulante.
Curioso anche in questo caso
di ficcarvi il naso feci del tutto
per accattivarmi la simpatia
del fotografo e subito divenni il
suo servitorello, così mi
chiamava. Rammento allorché
per la prima volta vidi
riprodurre nel vetro
cinematographic apparatus. In the area of cameras alone, he invented
the following:
1899 A movie camera for amateurs.
1910 He perfected the Cinesigraph, which he had invented in 1898 and
patented in 1899, which had then been mass produced, and
patented the new model (Cinesigraph = recording of movement,
from the Greek Kinesis = movement, and grapho = I write).
1991 He patented, a panoramic movie camera the with a lens that
swivelled horizontally, and in which 70 m/m film was used (it
anticipated Todd AO).
1929 He took out a patent — N. 826.134 — in July of this year, on another
panoramic movie camera that functioned with horizontal slippage
of standard 35 m/m film, and also recorded the 24X45 cm
photogram horizontally. The positive was printed vertically and
the photogram reduced to 13X24 cms (it anticipated Vistavision).

The Alberini Kinematograph consists of a wooden box which houses all
the necessary mechanisms to wind the film forward and operate the
shutter.
The film unwinds from top to bottom, on a mobile classis mounted inside
che box, passing in front of a square exposure aperture, (fig. 4.H)
The film moves forward by passing from one cylinder to another. The two
cylinders are held together by a taut spring.
The shutter consists of a shield which is raised and lowered in front of the
exposure aperture, like a guillottine; the shield has a narrow opening in
it, which either remains open or is closed by a valve.

Appresi facilmente le diverse
manipolazioni occorrenti per
ottenere una fotografia, tanto
che il mio padrone fu sorpreso
e si compiaceva dei risultati
del suo allievo. Venne il giorno
del distacco che mi lasciò
molto avvilito. Dopo pochi
giorni venni a sapere che un
vecchio prete aveva una
macchina fotografica! Non fui
tranquillo fin tanto che lo
convinsi di vendermela,
sostenendo nel contempo non
lieve fatica per indurre mio
padre a farne la spesa in lire
12! Era una di quelle
macchine antiche a cassetta,
per fotografare al collodio
umido, e che presentemente
conservo. Quante fotografie io
facessi in poco tempo non
saprei dire: certo che debbono
essere state un buon
quantitativo!».
Più avanti, nel succitato articolo,
Alberini spiegò invece come
cominciò ad interessarsi della
cinematografia:
« Un giorno, passeggiando a
Firenze sotto i portici di Piazza
Vittorio Emanuele la mia
attenzione fu attratta da un
piccolo avviso esposto nella
vetrina di un negozio. L'avviso
diceva: "Grande novità —
Kinetoscopio Edison —
Fotografia animata, ecc. ".
Entrato vidi subito che si
trattava di un automatico in
quanto che funzionava con la
introduzione di una moneta in
apposita apertura.
Dall'apparenza estetica di un
elegante mobile e direi quasi
di un piccolo pianoforte,
introdussi la moneta e
portando gli occhi in apposito
oculare l'esclamazione di
meraviglia mi uscì spontanea
dalla bocca. Le spire voluttuose
dei veli di una ballerina, i
cadenzati e vigorosi colpi del
fabbro sul ferro rovente, i tenui
movimenti del barbiere, tutto
un insieme di incomprensibili
visioni che mi fecero l'effetto di
un sogno fantastico! L'uomo
che stava di guardia non volle
spiegarsi a rispondere ad
alcune mie domande ed andò
sulle furie quando gli chiesi di
poter vedere l'interno del
magico istrumento. Non
importa, svelerò io il segreto,
pensavo fra me. Infatti poco
dopo mi venne in mente una
cosa molto semplice: non
sarebbe forse meraviglioso
poter far vedere quella
fotografia animata a centinaia
di persone col mezzo della
proiezione luminosa sul tipo
della vecchia lanterna
magica?Da quel giorno — anno
1894 — incominciai la mia vita
cinematografica. In
quell'epoca non esisteva la
pellicola speciale come quella
che si usa oggi per il
cinematografo, però già
esisteva la pellicola fotografica
per uso esclusivo delle
macchine fotografiche tipo
Kodak. Spiegai facilmente
come poteva formarsi il
movimento delle figure
fotografiche. Una serie di
rapidissime istantanee doveva
dare per risultante l'analisi di
un movimento, mentre nella
successiva visione, diretta od
in proiezione, doveva scaturire

box. The system has a solid axle, and a cylinder with an attached cam.
With every half turn of the axle, the cylinder moves a certain quantity of
film forward, while the film remains stationary during the second
half-turn; during the complete turn of the cylinder, the cam raises and
. lowers the shutter.
Thus, the number of exposures equals the number of times the following
combination of alternate movements is effected:
1 ) Winding forward of the film and raising of the shutter with valve
closed,•
2) Lowering of the shutter with valve open, while film remains
stationary.
The Alberini Kinetograph effects 1,000 exposures per minute, which
corresponds to 16.6 or, practically speaking, 16 photograms per second
In order to obtain a patent, it was required, by Law, that various
documents accompanied the application, including the relevant designs
and a description of the apparatus (fig. 4 & 5 a, b, c).
The documents reproduced here are the indisputable proof of when the
first Italian movie camera was invented.
This invention, and the many others that followed, make Filoteo Alberini
the first real pioneer of cinematograph ic technique in Italy.
