profondità raggiungeva 126 mt.
mentre la minima 16 mt. La
caratteristica delle pareti era
quella di essere piene di neve,
che, scivolando verso il basso, si
sommava ad altra neve che
seguiva lo stesso percorso.
L'unione delle due masse nevose
dava luogo alla formazione di
valanghe ("ventischiero") che si
spingevano verso il mare.
Le pessime condizioni
atmosferiche favorivano là
turbolenza del mare che
raggiunse forza sette. L'auspicio
di tutti i naviganti era quello di
raggiungere al più presto lo
stretto del Drake dove il mare è
costantemente calmo.
L'insenatura "Jentegaia" impose
al Covadonga una sosta per
sbarcare un passeggero,
proprietario di una grande
"estancia" (fattoria) ove
stanziavano settemila pecore. Il
comandante del Covadonga con
parte dei suoi ufficiali e la troupe
documentaristica scesero così a
terra per consumare la cena
offerta dal proprietario della
fattoria.
Dopo cena si riprese la
navigazione. Il mare era sempre
agitato e il Covadonga fu
costretto a riparare alla baia
"Orange" per trascorrervi la
notte.
La baia vista dall'esterno,
suggeriva l'immagine del cratere
di un vulcano. Questo anello di
roccia è circondato dal mare,
l'ingresso è permesso grazie ad
una interruzione dell'anello.
All'interno si trova la baia di
Orange dove il mare è calmo
come l'acqua di un lago. Il
paesaggio che si spazia
dall'interno è sinistro e poco
rassicurante: allora la luce
lunare investiva due enormi
capannoni deserti, e i raggi
lunari facevano brillare i pochi
vetri sani di enormi fmestroni
posti in alto agli edifici.
Tutt'intorno era silenzio. Dopo
novant'anni di inattività i due
capannoni, che servivano per la
lavorazione della balena,
giacevano nella loro dignità,
consapevoli di un passato
operoso.
Il mattino seguente fu
annunciato dal baccano dei
"gaviotti" (una specie di uccelli
simili ai gabbiani) ghiotti di
carne di balena, ma allora
ridimensionati e pronti a
ghermire qualsiasi rifiuto
venisse gettato in mare da bordo
del Covadonga.
Ripresa la navigazione, un
mercantile incrociò la rotta del
cacciatorpediniere, diretto
all'Isola Navarrino.
Approfittando della favorevole
coincidenza si trasbordò con
una scialuppa l'ospite del
Covadonga diretto all'isola. Si
riprese dunque il cammino
mentre le sirene delle due
imbarcazioni suonavano in
segno di saluto. Così il
Covadonga abbreviò il suo
off. He was the owner of a large "estancia" (estate) with 7,000headof
sheep. He very cordially invited the Captain, a number of his officers and
the documentary crew to dine with him, and we all went ashore to enjoy
his hospitality.
We set sail again after dinner, but the sea was still very rough and the
"Covadonga" was forced to take shelter in the Bay of Orange for the night
Seen from the open sea, the Bay looked like a large crater lake. The walls
of the "crater" were surrounded by the sea, and there was just one gap
through which a ship could pass. Inside, the waters of the Bay were
always as calm as a millpond. The landscape, seen from inside, was
sinister, and a little eerie: the moon shone full on two enormous deserted
sheds, its rays striking the few large windows, high up on the building,
that remained intact, and making them glitter like giant diamonds.
There was an unearthly silence all around The sheds, that had once been
whaling factories had been in disuse for about ninety years, but they still
stood there proudly in the moonlight, knowing they had done their fair
share of work.
The next morning, we were awoken by the screaming cries of the
"gaviotti" (a bird similar to the seagull), which were gluttons for
whalemeat, but had now had to adapt to circumstances and, therefore,
greedily snatched up any piece of edible refuse the "Covadonga" might
throw into the sea
When we set sail again, we met up with a cargo vessel heading for the
Island of Navarrino. As chance would have it, one of our passengers was
going to that Island, and so he was transferred to the cargo ship in a
cutter. This way, the "Covadonga"gained a day. When the two ships
continued on their voyage, they sounded their sirens in salute.
The crew of the "Covadonga" was always on duty. As well as their normal
itinerario di un giorno.
L'equipaggio del Covadonga era
sempre in servizio durante la
navigazione. Tra i compiti da
svolgere c'era anche quello delle
esercitazioni per un presunto
incendio, per la simulazione di
un uomo in mare, per
l'addestramento al puntamento e
tiro dei cannoni e delle
mitragliere antiaeree. Quando il
personale imbarcato legge, scrive
o rassetta gli indumenti
personali si può considerare in
"libera uscita".
Tra i compiti che doveva svolgere
la nave da guerra cilena, c'era
anche quello del prelievo,
all'isola "Diego Ramirez", di un
marinaio affetto da sinusite. In
quest'isola vivevano tre marinai
col compito di comunicare a
tutte le navi su quella rotta le
condizioni atmosferiche, non
trascurando nel contempo
l'efficienza e la funzionalità del
faro loro assegnato.
Proseguendo nella crociera gli
iceberg si presentavano sempre
più numerosi. Il mare in
burrasca e la nebbia
consigliavano agli uomini sul
ponte di comando ad una
maggiore attenzione, anche se il
duties, they practised fire drill, simulated a man overboard and carried
out manoeuvres with the cannons and antiaircraft guns. When they
read, wrote letters or tidied their clothes, they considered themselves "on
leave"!
The Chilean warship also had to take a sailor suffering from sinusitis, off
the Island of "Diego Ramirez". Three sailors were stationed on this island,
and it was their responsibility to communicate the weather conditions to
all ships in the area, and also keep the lighthouse in perfect •working
order.
As we continued on our voyage, the icebergs became more and more
numerous and, combined with the stormy seas and fog, this kept the men
on the command deck in a state of constant alert, even though the radar
tranquilized them somewhat.
The antarctic swallows darted across i brilliant blue sky, and the
penguins swam round and round the destroyer in joyous circles,
welcoming us to the "Arthur Prat" Base. In the distance, one could only
glimpse parts of the coast, as the rest was covered by the perennial
glaciers. The air was crystalline, and the entire landscape tinged with
blue. As we surveyed it, we really did feel as if we were on another planet
A "pattugliero" (a special type of tugboat) came out to welcome us, and
fired a number of salvos in salute when it came alongside the
"Covadonga".
The "Covadonga" dropped anchor next to the "Rancagua", a petrol
tanker. The engines, '.ike those of all the other ships, were kept running to
a minimum, so that we would be able to move out if the sea froze over.
The Captain of the "Rancagua" invited the Captain of the "Covadonga",
the Italian documentary crew and the officers from both ships, to dinner,
and we found ourselves sitting down to a wonderful banquet The dinner
