Era l'inizio del colore, Tonino
Delli Colli si era già cimentato
con il negativo Ferraniacolor (10
ASA) a girare "Totò a colori". La
Sud Film di Amoroso aveva
prodotto il film "Siamo ricchi e
poveri" e la Excelsa Film "Noi
cannibali".
La Phoenix-Film (Presidente il
Prof. Gallo e l'organizzatore
generale Dr. Gallinari) si
accingeva a mettere in
lavorazione una serie di
documentari da girarsi in Cile.
Veniva scritturata per
l'occasione una troupe composta
da Arturo Gemmiti, regista,
Salvatore Occhipinti, direttore
della fotografia, Claudio Ragona,
operatore alla macchina. Il
contratto aveva decorrenza dal
16 dicembre 1953. Un articolo
del contratto stabiliva:
"Voi dichiarate di essere a
conoscenza che la maggior parte
delle riprese dovrà essere
effettuata in zona dell'Antartide
e comunque in zone primitive e
in condizioni disagiate".
La costellazione dell'Orsa era
chiamata dagli antichi greci
Arktos, e da tale costellazione
prese nome il polo Nord,
Arktikos. Di conseguenza
l'estrema regione australe venne
chiamata Antarktikos.
L'Antartide è il continente più
freddo e più secco della terra, e
là sono stati ritrovati frammenti
di Nakliti (meteoriti provenienti
da Marte un miliardo di anni fa):
La Terra è seppellita sotto una
coltre di ghiaccio dello spessore
It was the beginning of the colour era- Tonino Delli Colli had already
experimented with Ferrianacolor (10 ASA) and used it to shoot "Totò a
colon". Amoroso's Sud Film had produced "Siamo ricchi e poveri", and
Excelsa Film "Noi cannibali".
Phoenix Film (President, Prof. Gallo; General Manager, Dr. Gallinari)
was fast about to start shooting a documentary series in Chile. The crew
they signed up was composed by: Arturo Gemmiti, Director; Salvatore
Occhipinti, Director of Photography; and, myself, Claudio Ragona,
Cameraman. Our contract started on December 16th, 1953, and one of the
articles stipulated:
'You hereby declare you are fully aware that the greater part of the
filming has to be effected in the Antarctic and, therefore, in primitive
areas and under difficult conditions".
The "Bear" constellation was known by the ancient Greeks as "Arktos",
and the North Pole, taking its name from this, "Arkatikos". Consequently,
the South Pole was called Antarkatikos".
Antarctica is the driest, coldest continent on the Earth, and it is also
there that fragments of Nakliti (meteoroids which came fron Mars over a
billion years ago) have been found The land is buried under a layer of
ice which rests cm a substratum of rock and is an average of 2 kms. thick,
while in some places it is actually 4775 mts. thick! The average annual
temperature is - 50 °C. 91% od the world's glaciers are located at the South
Pole. These figures give afar more real picture of the landscape than that
which one might imagine and, in fact, it resembles another planet
We took off from Ciampino airport, on a DC4, powered by four propeller
engines, but without a pressurized passenger cabin; so it flew no higher
than an altitude of3,000 mts, with an average cruising speed of330 k.p.h
Stopovers were scheduled every six hours, the first one at Lisbon, then at
