modo come il regista mi ha
"iniziato" a quel particolare film.
La storia infatti è importante, e
tutte le volte che la fotografia mi
è riuscita bene sempre lo è stato
perché costruita nel rapporto
regista-storia. Cosa significa una
"bella" fotografia però, se non
capisci la gente?
Tutti pensano che la fotografia
sia un fatto tecnico: 2... 2,8... 4,5...
6,3... o 8... Non è questo che fa la
bella fotografia...
E più importante il rapporto tra
direttore di fotografia e tra
regista e la gente.
Devo confessare che in vita mia
non ho trovato grande
comprensione in questo senso,
né troppa sensibilità in coloro
che mi circondavano! Se un
regista ti parla di una storia
importante "per la fotografia"...
d'accordo! Ma nel caso delle
fotografia come fai a prescindere
dall'ambiente? Mi sembra un
assurdo!
Arrivati a un certo livello,
qualsiasi operatore conosce la
tecnica: la tecnica, come la
matematica non è mai troppo
difficile. Ma il problema è saper
entrare nella storia attraverso la
gente. Assimilare i contenuti.
L'attuale fervore di nozioni, di
intrighi, di furberia, sono
patrimonio di tutti, mentre
questa specie di istinto che io
penso sia quasi un fatto
inconscio in molti direttori di
fotografia anche se
culturalmente modesti (come
avviene per molti pittori e
perfino molti registi) è alla base
di ogni successo.
Se non riesci a vivere appieno il
momento in cui non potrai mai
fare una bella fotografia.
Non potrei giustificare altrimenti
la fotografia di alcuni bei film
way. It was a really human scene to watch, but unfortunately, we couldn't
film it, because it wasn't in the script!
To sum up, I would like to say that if one has a minimum of sensitivity,
the photography one creates must relate to the moment in history that the
world is actually living. What's the point in creating merely "beautiful"
photography? I've never been able to understand exactly what this
means, anyway!
My photography, however modest it might be, is always a result of how the
director has started me off on the film. And every time the photography
has turned out well, it is because the concept for it was evolved from the
story, which is important in itself, and the Director's interpretation of it
What significance can "beautiful" photography have, if one doesn't have
any understanding of people? Everyone thinks that photography is
merely a technical skill 2... 2.8... 4.5... 6.3... or 8... But figures alone don't
make good photography.
What is more important is the relationship that the Director of
Photography and the Director, have with people. I have to confess that I
haven't always been understood as regards this, not even by my
colleagues! If the Director tells you the photography's important to the
story, O.K.! But how can that same photography be separate from its
setting? It would be absurd!
When he arrives at a certain point in his profession, a Director of
Photography obviously has sufficient technical knowledge. Technical
problems, like their mathematical equivalents, are never too difficult to
solve. The real problem is to enter the feeling of the story, through people.
To assimilate the contents. Our world, with its current ferment of ideas,
intrigue and manipulation is therefor everyone to analyse; but, I believe
the almost unconscious instinct which many Directors of Photography
accordo musicale. Ma se non
esiste questa sintonia con quel
preciso momento, momento
storico, momento particolare
durante il quale vivi,... non esiste
successo.
E dipende anche dal tuo tenore
di vita, da come mangi, bevi...
se mangi bene e vivi bene, o al
contrario, se questo ti manca... e
mangi male, soffri di una grande
miseria. La normalità genera
cose normali, piatte!
L'altro giorno ho visto in TV quel
grande film che è "Shining"
fotografato da John Alcott.
ignoro se Alcott sia stato un
uomo di cultura o meno, ma
certo era un operatore che aveva
ben assimilato quello che doveva
fare. Direi che la sua è una
fotografia "assimilata", mentre
spesso questa capacità è assente
anche in alcuni registi cui sfugge
il vero significato di questa
parola.
possess, even if of modest culture (like many painters, and even
Directors) is the secret of successful photography. If you are not able to
live the moment, identify with it, you will never produce really good
photography.
One could not justify the superb photography in certain films, if this
particular sensitivy did not exist in the Director of Photography, even
though it might not be evident in his personality, either because he's
unaware that he has it, or tries to hide it
Truly great films are created when the people working cm them are
totally in tune with them. The older I get, the more convinced I become
that people who create photography must be in "harmony", like tho notes
of a musical chord And if you are not in harmony with the particular
moment, the moment in history which you are living... you cannot create
successful photography.
It also depends on your standard of living. What you eat and drink...
Whether you eat and drink well, or if you can't do this for some reason.,
and you eat badly, live a miserable life... An ordinary existence produces
ordinary, flat things!
The other day, I saw that great film: "THE SHINING" photographed by
John Alcott, on T.V. I don't know if John Alcott was a man of culture or not,
but one could see that he had "assimilated" all that was necessary to
create the photography! In fact, I would say that his photography was
"assimilated"; whereas, some Directors often don't have this capacity,
don't understand the true meaning of the word
