AIC
1970, aveva già perduto
irrimediabilmente circa il 20%
delle sue tonalità cromatiche.
Credo dovrebbe essere buona
cura di ogni società
cinematografica conservare il
proprio patrimonio, il proprio
bene: economico, culturale,
storico, sociale. Si provvede
oggigiorno a restaurare in tutto
il mondo opere
cinematografiche, utilizzando
quando possibile nuove
tecnologie di conservazione, si
provvede oggigiorno a duplicare
immediatamente un progetto da
voler preservare dallo stesso
momento della sua conclusione.
E normale oggigiorno, per una
seria società, nazionale od
internazionale, investire una
percentuale del profitto nel
cercare di mantenere in vita il
proprio massimo bene: il
negativo originale di un film,
tramite sue duplicazioni su
materiali di lunga preservazione.
Per il film "Il conformista", mi è
stato così possibile effettuare
una trascrizione elettronica
digitale su nastro, che ne
permetterà la eterna
conservazione in video, ed una
trascrizione su pellicole in
poliestere denominate Silver
Master di separazione: tre
pellicole in bianco e nero che
porteranno, in metallo nero e
per questo inalterabili nel tempo,
le informazioni cromatiche dei
tre colori primari, che
permetteranno la ricostruzione
di un duplicato dell'immagine a
colori ogni qual volta si renda
necessario. L'unica possibilità
odierna di prevenire seriamente
la scomparsa delle nostre
immagini a colori, in attesa di un
futuribile sistema digitale, ad
immagazzinamento numerico,
per una ricostruzione ottica
dell'immagine.
La storia de "Il conformista",
spero possa divenire un esempio
che l'Archivio della
Cinematografia di Stato possa
seguire, ritrascrivendo
permanentemente tutti i film a
colori ritenuti da dover
preservare in futuro, per la
nostra cultura, per la stessa
storia cinematografica del nostro
paese.
Un esempio che tutti i produttori
dovrebbero poter seguire,
prevedendo la conservazione dei
loro capitali: il negativo di tutti i
film prodotti e da produrre,
trascritti su materiali inalterabili.
Un esempio che il Ministero dei
Beni Culturali dovrebbe poter
promuovere, a difesa della
nostra cultura nazionale. Un
esempio che il Ministero del
Turismo e dello Spettacolo
dovrebbe poter utilizzare,
inserendo nella nuova legge di
regolamentazione
cinematografica, "come obbligo"
per la partecipazione ai Premi di
Qualità o meglio ancora alla
programmazione obbligatoria in
Italia: il dovere di trascrizione del
negativo originale a colori su
silver master separation, da
consegnarsi insieme ad una
"copia campione" del film,
vistata dal regista e dall'autore
della fotografia, presso la
Cineteca Nazionale per la
conservazione in luoghi a
temperatura ed umidità
controllati.
Se fatto tempestivamente, molto
si può recuperare, sono ormai
tra i 30 ed i 40 anni che le nostre
storie vengono filmate su
materiali a colori, alterabili nel
greatest asset: the Original Negative, by duplicating it on materials that
will conserve it permanently.
For the film "Il conformista", I was able to effect an Electronic Digital
transcription onto tape, that will permit its permanent conservation on
video, and a second transcription onto Silver Master Separation polyester
films: three Black & White films which store in black metal and, therefore,
in an unalterable and permanent state, the chromatic information
regarding the three primary colours, thus permitting a duplicate of the
colour images to be re-constructed whenever necessary. This is the only
valid possibility we have, today, of preventing our colour images from
fading into nothing; at least, until a digital system is invented, which
mil store the relevant information numerically, from which the optical
image can be re-constructed
I hope the story of "Il conformista " might become an example for the
National Cinema Archives to follow, by requesting the necessary
government financing which will permit the transcription of all Colour
Films deemed worthy of preserving for our culture and cinema history,
onto materials which loill conserve them permanently.
It is also an example that all producers should be able to follow, thus
ensuring the permanent conservation of their capital: the Negatives of all
the Films already produced, and to be produced in the future.
An example that the Ministry of Culture should be able to take up, in
defence of our culture. And an example that the "Ministero del Turismo e
dello Spettacolo" should be able to benefit from, by inserting a clause into
the regulations of the new Cinematographic Law, making it compulsory
when competing for quality awards or, better still, when the compulsory
programming of a film is effected in Italy, to: Transcribe the Original
Colour Negative onto Silver Master Separation and deliver it, together
tempo, ad un tipo di
invecchiamento che giorno dopo
giorno porta le nostre immagini
sulla soglia dello svanimento
completo.
Già l'Accademia Leonardo e la
Associazione Italiana Autori
della Fotografia si sono fatte
promotrici di iniziative atte a
raccogliere firme per perorare
questa fondamentale causa
presso il Ministero del Turismo e
dello Spettacolo.
Questa volta con coscienza,
questa volta con consapevolezza,
potremmo essere ancora in
tempo a riparare a tanto passato;
siamo comunque certamente
ancora in tempo a "riparare" al
nostro avvenire, a prevedere che
i nostri film del presente e del
futuro siano ideati, realizzati,
divulgati e conservati, senza
l'angoscia che possano in seguito
sparire, irrimediabilmente, senza
nessuna possibilità di rimedio;
tanto da dar modo in futuro,
anche ai nostri nipoti di avere la
possibilità di poter vedere, di
poter capire, la nostra storia, la
nostra cultura, la nostra
espressione nell'arte
cinematografica.
Sin dal tempo della stampa della
copia campione, dovremmo così
poter trascrivere tutte le
informazioni cromatiche,
storiche di quel momento,
ancora inalterate, su mezzi di
sicuro affidamento nel futuro.
Dovremmo promuovere,
sensibilizzare, convincere ogni
casa di produzione a preservare
il loro stesso investimento,
inserendo nel costo industriale
del film, all'atto della sua
realizzazione quindi, la voce: per
la conservazione dell'immagine a
colori nel tempo.
with an "Answer Print " of the film, authorized by both the Director and
Photographic Author, to the National Film Library, for storage at the
correct temperature and degree of humidity.
If something is done in time, many films can be saved. We have been
filming our stories in colour for 30 or 40 years now, with film material
that Alters with Time, and which is subject to an ageing process that
daily takes our images closer to that point where they will vanish
completely. The "AccademiaLeonardo"and the "AssociazioneItaliana
Autori della Fotografia" have already, on different occasions, collected
signatures in support of this cause, so fundamental to the cinema, for
presentation to the "Ministero del Turismo e dello Spettacolo".
Now we have the awareness, 'now we have knowledge, we are in a
position to remedy all the errors of the Past; we are certainly in a position
to avoid errors in the Future, by ensuring that the films of the Present
and Future are Conceived, Realized, Divulged and Conserved without the
fear that they might disappear for ever, without there being any
possibility of saving them; thus, people in the future, including our
grandchildren, will have the possibility of seeing, and undestanding,
how we expressed ourselves in the Cinematographic Art, and
understanding both our history and culture.
From the time the Answer Print is struck, we will therefore have the
possibility of transcribing all the chromatic and historical data of that
particular moment, still in its unaltered state, onto material that will
conserve it permanently.
We have to see to it that every Production Company is aware of the
problem, and convince them to take action to safeguard their
investments, by inserting in a film's budget, the item: for the Preservation
of the Colour Image in Time.
