loro viaggio di trasformazione, di
modificazione, di
decomposizione, tanto da
decolorarsi sempre più, tanto da
scomparire sempre più.
Sino a quel momento, sapevo più
o meno coscientemente che le
pellicole positive dei nostri film,
tramite i tanti passaggi davanti
alla luce della lampada di
proiezione, si decoloravano nel
tempo, ma mai avrei potuto
pensare che il negativo originale,
la matrice dei nostri desideri,
sogni, piaceri e dolori, potesse
pian piano scomparire.
Lo pensavo ben protetto, avvolto
in buste conservatrici, entro
scatole ben sigillate, poste in
bell'ordine sui robusti scaffali
dell'archivio del Cinema, nel
magazzino che conserva tutta la
memoria cinematografica.
E come me, credo, quasi tutti gli
operatori del settore (produttori,
registi, co-autori, distributori,
critici etc.) ignoravano e forse
ancora molti di loro ignorano
che tutto il materiale a colori
foto-cinematografico è
deperibile, inesorabilmente
votato a dissolversi tra le maglie
del tempo.
Non importa a che temperatura,
a che grado di umidità, a che
stato di isolamento sia esso
conservato, il "fading" è un
processo inarrestabile, possiamo
solamente rallentarlo seguendo
alla lettera tutte quelle norme ed
istruzioni che vengono da
sempre consigliate dalle case di
fabbricazione dei materiali
sensibili.
Purtroppo, questi tipi di consigli
tecnici, per ignoranza, profitto,
speculazione, indifferenza, non
vengono quasi mai veramente
seguiti. I produttori di tutti i film
nazionali, da sempre hanno
abbandonato i negativi originali
di tutti i film prodotti, nei
magazzini degli stabilimenti di
sviluppo e stampa, senza mai
provvedere ad un minimo di
rimborso per la conservazione in
un ambiente adibito a questo
scopo.
Anche in questo momento che
scrivo, l'immagine a colori di
tutti i film prodotti sino ad oggi,
continua il suo percorso di
alterazione, perdendo il suo
originale equilibrio cromatico, la
sua originale densità tonale,
l'originale possibilità stessa di
chiamarsi immagine, per
sempre.
C'era un tempo, in cui le nostre
fantasie erano filmate in bianco
e nero, ed i composti di argento
registravano luci ed ombre in
modo permanente, non soggetti
a questo tipo di alterazioni
fisico-chimiche che vanno a
trasformare lo stato molecolare
dei coloranti che formano
l'immagine a colori stessa.
Si passò in seguito a registrare le
prime immagini a colori con il
processo Technicolor, a
selezione tricroma, in cui si
sensibilizzavano tre immagini in
bianco e nero che portavano le
informazioni cromatiche di ogni
colore primario e che venivano
in seguito stampate con un
processo ad imbibizione
cromatica che ne garantiva la
stabilità nel tempo e che ne
permetteva la riproducibilità
ogni qualvolta nuova matrici
venivano imbibite di nuovi colori.
Le moderne tecnologie, che ci
hanno portato maggior
semplicità operativa, maggior
leggerezza nelle attrezzature
tecniche, maggior velocità di
are continuing to fade unrelentingly, are losing their original chromatic
balance, their original tonal density, and the possibility of calling
themselves Images for ever.
There was a time when the images we created with our fantasy were
filmed in Black & White, a process in which silver compounds recorded
the light and shadow permanently, and they were not subject to the above
type of physicochemical changes that alter the molecular structure of the
colorants which form the actual colour image.
We then moved on to recording the first colour images, using the
Technicolor process, with tricolour selection, in which three Black &
White images which stored the chromatic data of each primary colour,
were sensitized, and then subsequently printed, using a colour tinting
process that guaranteed the stability of the colour, and permitted its
exact reproduction, every time new matrixes were tinted with new
colours.
Even though modern technology has given us equipment that is much
lighter and easier to operate, made production much faster and made
recording-developing-printing much more rapid and far less costly, it
has, however, deprived us of the possibility of conserving the image in
time: conserving our history, our culture and the Memory of our Cinema
The disastrous act of destroying all the matrixes using the old
Technicolor colour-tinting process, and the consequent failure to protect
the Original Negative by making Black & White duplicates of the three
primary colours, has created a void in world Cinema which is completely
unfillable, irreparable, and makes the regeneration of many, many Films
impossible.
It is a little like erasing the part of a country's history that has been
recounted with cinematographic images, for ever.
produzione, maggior risparmio
di tempi e di costi nel registrare -
sviluppare - stampare le nostre
immagini, ci hanno tolto però la
conservazione nel tempo: della
nostra storia, della nostra
cultura, della nostra memoria
cinematografica.
Il grande disastro causato dalla
distruzione di tutte le matrici ad
imbibizione cromatica del
vecchio sistema Technicolor, e
della conseguente rinuncia alla
protezione del negativo originale
tramite dei duplicati in bianco e
nero dei tre colori primari, ha
formato un vuoto incolmabile ed
irrimediabile in tutta la
Cinematografia mondiale, ha
distrutto la possiblità
rigenerativa di tanti e tanti film.
Un po' come passare un colpo di
spugna su una parte della storia
di un paese raccontata dalle
immagini cinematografiche, e
cancellarlo per sempre.
Tutti i produttori che hanno
firmato la condanna a morte di
tanta storia del Cinema: quella
famosa lettera di alcuni anni fa
che autorizzava l'andata al
macero delle matrici dei loro
Film, credendo, più o meno in
buona fede, di avere comunque
il negativo originale ben
conservato, non sapevano, non
sanno ed alcuni non vorranno
mai sapere il danno subito e
procurato, non solo culturale,
non solo storico, ma
particolarmente per loro stessi,
industriale ed economico.
Nessun tecnico del settore
purtroppo, denunciò loro in
tempo utile e con i termini
drammatici del caso, la verità
sullo stato provvisorio e
temporaneo dei negativi originali
a colori e della doverosità di una
All the producers who condemned such a large part of our Cinema
history to death by signing that famous letter of some years ago,
authorizing the matrixes of their Films to be destroyed, believing, more or
less in good faith, that they had an Original Negative in good condition,
did not know, do not know, and some will never want to know, the
damage they caused, not only to our cinema from a cultural and
historical point of view, but particularly to themselves, from an economic
and business point of view.
Unfortunately, the technicians involved failed to denounced these
producers in time; neither did they inform us just how serious the
situation was; nor tell us that the Original Colour Negative was subject to
fading and it was, therefore, our duty to transcribe its chromatic data
onto material that would record it permanently.
Afterwards, many companies began to understand how serious the
problem was when they went to collect the Original Colour Negatives of
those Cinematographic works that could be sold in re-issue
internationally, for showing both in the cinemas and on television; and
also when, to exploit the cinematographic product to an even greater
extent, video cassettes began to be sold directly to the public, permitting
them to build individual libraries, and allowing cinema buffs to acquire
a greater knowledge of the cinematography of other eras and other
countries.
When High Definition Television comes into use in the near future, one
can safely predict further growth in the above sector, thus permitting
greater exploitation of all the Cinematographic Images already created,
and to be created in the future.
It is only in the last few days, while I have been writing this article, that I
am finally rid of a greai anxiety, and lean breathe a deep sigh of relief,
