AIC continua tutt'oggi perché, da quel primo lavoro come assistente a tutti gli altri che seguirono come operatore, ho sempre preso parte ai filmati di quel regista. Sto parlando di Folco Quilici. Tutti coloro che lo conoscono e hanno seguito la sua straordinaria carriera, sanno che genere di viaggi fà e in quali parti della terra. Dopo quel primo lavoro in Africa, dove per la prima volta nella vita, mi trovai a pochi metri da branchi di leoni, di elefanti o altri animali feroci, ed entrai in contatto con tribù molto primitive. Cominciai a capire usi e costumi di questa gente, imparai l'importanza del patriarcato esistente nelle tribù e vidi la differenza di trattamento delle persone anziane, confrontata a quanto succede nei nostri paesi "civilizzati". In Africa essere anziani significa saggezza e rispetto, la vecchiaia è una condizione di privilegio. Nei villaggi è demandato al vecchio saggio il compito di trasmettere ai giovani tutte le esperienze di vita accumulate e tramandate nei secoli. Come cacciare, come accendere un fuoco, guarire una malattia e fare tutto ciò che è utile per la sopravvivenza in una situazione di vita estremamente difficile. Nell'ex Congo Belga dove capitammo nel bel mezzo della rivoluzione civile, dovemmo lasciare il paese in tutta fretta perché in quel periodo storico essere bianchi (e per di più con una cinepresa in mano) non era per così dire molto salutare. Nel Mali ci trovammo ad assistere all'esecuzione di un condannato a morte che aveva ways of the natives. La notte si andava a letto vestiti per due motivi: prima, per evitare le punture delle zanzare oltremodo fameliche e poi perché ad ogni ora circa dovevamo bagnare i nostri indumenti che, prima di asciugarsi nuovamente garantivano un'oretta di sonno col lieve refrigerio dell'umidità. Quilici per sua natura non ha mai amato e non ama filmare cose che sono alla portata di tutti (come dice lui, turistiche). Così per i suoi film ci siamo spinti e ci spingiamo sempre più verso posti inaccessibili, possibilmente sconosciuti o poco visitati dalla maggioranza. Ciò significa il più delle volte posti poco comodi e pericolosi. Fu proprio per riuscire in questo suo intento che, dopo il primo viaggio e in previsione di altri Quilici riuscì a mettere insieme una troupe di sei o sette elementi, molto ben affiatati, che rimasero sempre gli stessi per moltissimi anni di lavoro. Dopo l'Africa, seguirono una serie di otto puntate di un'ora sulla storia dell'India; poi un'altra sulla storia dell'Islam. Quello dell'India fu un lavoro straordinario, sia per la bellezza dei luoghi, che per la scoperta di una civiltà e di una elevatezza spirituale uniche al mondo. Filmammo episodi di vita quotidiana usi, costumi, luoghi sacri, templi, cerimonie religiose che oggi, con i cambiamenti politici e sociali che si sono verificati in circa vent'anni, sarebbe impossibile rifilmare. Per tornare alla pericolosità dei viaggi, fù in quell'occasione che, durante un'escursione nell'interno del paese e trovandoci in uno stato di totale mancanza di viveri, mangiai una scatoletta di carne comprata in un mercatino locale (forse una rimanenza di qualche spedizione Quilici, because of his nature, has never liked filming things that are within everyone's reach (stufffor the tourists, he says). We covered hundreds of kilometres, sailing up the rivers of Amazonas or New Guinea, pushing further and further inland, in the hope that we would find a tribe err two that hadn't been "civilized" by the white man. We flew on every type of aircraft imaginable, large, small, helicopters, gliders, montgolfiers; we sailed on submarines, bathyscaphes and motor launches of every size and variety. And just to make it even more fun, every so often we would land in the middle of a war! Not an easy life, from the point of view of everything one has to go through, but one that is always varied, and filled with beauty, marvellous happenings and unrepeatable experiences. I've filmed hundreds of dawns and sunsets the world over (the ones in Africa remain the most breathtaking), and landscapes, all incredibly different one from another. What is more important is that as the days went by, I developed Quilici's taste for the beautiful image, the great shot — and Quilici is a true master of the art! Insomma, una vita decisamente poco comoda vista dal lato dei disagi, ma anche molto varia e piena di cose belle, avvenimenti meravigliosi, e sensazioni irrepetibili. Ho filmato centinaia di albe e tramonti in tutto il mondo, (quelle Africane restano le più belle) paeasaggi incredibilmente vari. E quel che più conta, aver, giorno dopo giorno, appreso da quel maestro che è Quilici, il gusto per la bella immagine e la bella inquadratura. La tempestività nel rubare un primo piano o una situazione particolare, o il cogliere l'ora esatta per una "luce magica". Cercar di fare d'ogni inquadratura un quadro a sè stante, ma adeguato al contesto complessivo della storia. Negli intervalli tra un viaggio e l'altro, ho intercalato le riprese del documentario puro con quelle di circa una ventina di film a soggetto. Ho potuto così constatare che in effetti girare un film è molto più riposante e tranquillo di fare un viaggio con Quilici. Forse con il passare degli anni e dopo aver visto tutto o quasi tutto, si è tentati a scegliere la più comoda seconda strada. Invece succede che, Quilici ti chiama e ti parla di un qualsiasi nuovo progetto di viaggio, risvegliando in te quella passione immensa che, anche se assopita è sempre viva e al richiamo della quale non si riesce a resistere. A ragione si parla del mal d'Africa. Anche se nel mio caso direi piuttosto "mal d'avventura", perché filmare è stata e continua ad essere per me una straordinaria e incredibile "Avventura per professione". But then Quilici will call you up, and tell you about whatever new project he has in mind, waking up the old enthusiasm which, even though it is sleeping in you somewhere, cannot resist the call of the wild People are right when they speak about a longing for Africa, although in my case I would say it was mare of a longing for adventure, because filming has always been, and continues to be for me, an extraordinary and quite incredible "professional"adventure.
