continua tutt'oggi perché, da
quel primo lavoro come
assistente a tutti gli altri che
seguirono come operatore, ho
sempre preso parte ai filmati di
quel regista.
Sto parlando di Folco Quilici.
Tutti coloro che lo conoscono e
hanno seguito la sua
straordinaria carriera, sanno che
genere di viaggi fà e in quali parti
della terra. Dopo quel primo
lavoro in Africa, dove per la
prima volta nella vita, mi trovai a
pochi metri da branchi di leoni,
di elefanti o altri animali feroci,
ed entrai in contatto con tribù
molto primitive. Cominciai a
capire usi e costumi di questa
gente, imparai l'importanza del
patriarcato esistente nelle tribù e
vidi la differenza di trattamento
delle persone anziane,
confrontata a quanto succede
nei nostri paesi "civilizzati".
In Africa essere anziani significa
saggezza e rispetto, la vecchiaia è
una condizione di privilegio.
Nei villaggi è demandato al
vecchio saggio il compito di
trasmettere ai giovani tutte le
esperienze di vita accumulate e
tramandate nei secoli.
Come cacciare, come accendere
un fuoco, guarire una malattia e
fare tutto ciò che è utile per la
sopravvivenza in una situazione
di vita estremamente difficile.
Nell'ex Congo Belga dove
capitammo nel bel mezzo della
rivoluzione civile, dovemmo
lasciare il paese in tutta fretta
perché in quel periodo storico
essere bianchi (e per di più con
una cinepresa in mano) non era
per così dire molto salutare.
Nel Mali ci trovammo ad
assistere all'esecuzione di un
condannato a morte che aveva
ways of the natives. I became aware of the importance of the patriarchy
in their tribal society, and saw how differently they treated their old folks
from the way so-called "civilized"societies treat theirs.
In Africa, old people are considered wise and deserving of respect and,
therefore, receive privileged treatment. In fact, it is the wise old man of
the village who is assigned the task of passing his knowledge on to the
young natives, as it has been for centuries, teaching them how to survive:
how to hunt, how to light a fire, how to cure sickness, and all the other
things they need to know to enable them to stay alive in an environment
where survival is extremely difficult
For example, when we were filming in the former Belgian Congo, we
found ourselves in the middle of an uprising and had to get out of there
fast, as during that particular period in history being white (especially if
you were toting a movie camera) was not particularly healthy!
In Mali, we found ourselves witnessing the execution of a man who had
violated a number of women and condemned by Koranic Law, had been
tied to a wooden stake and left out in the burning sun to die.
And in Mali, in the hot season, the temperature reaches 60° C, and
higher! With the sun beating down on you at that temperature, you'd
literally be burned to a cinder in no time!
In fact, I remember that we started filming at the first light of dawn and
continued till about 9.00 cum., after which we had to take refuge in our
"hotel"—a large hut — until sunset, when we would emerge once again to
shoot a few more images. However, we would keep all our clothes on when
we went to bed at night, for two reasons: firstly, to avoid being bitten by
the mosquitoes which were like miniature vampires and secondly, so
that we could make our clothes wet about once every hour, in order that
we might enjoy a little "refreshing" sleep before they dried out again!

Coranico, era stato legato ad un
palo sotto il sole e lì lasciato fino
alla morte. Il Mali è un paese
dove nella stagione calda la
temperatura al sole raggiunge
punte di sessanta gradi. Sotto la
sferza, di quella temperatura,
senza una protezione, si resiste
ben poco. Ricordo che per il
clima filmavamo dalle prime luci
dell'alba fin verso le nove di
mattina: poi dovevamo rimanere
al riparo nella nostra capanna
"hotel" fino al tramonto e solo
allora uscire per filmare ancora
qualche immagine.
La notte si andava a letto vestiti
per due motivi: prima, per
evitare le punture delle zanzare
oltremodo fameliche e poi
perché ad ogni ora circa
dovevamo bagnare i nostri
indumenti che, prima di
asciugarsi nuovamente
garantivano un'oretta di sonno
col lieve refrigerio dell'umidità.
Quilici per sua natura non ha
mai amato e non ama filmare
cose che sono alla portata di
tutti (come dice lui, turistiche).
Così per i suoi film ci siamo
spinti e ci spingiamo sempre più
verso posti inaccessibili,
possibilmente sconosciuti o poco
visitati dalla maggioranza.
Ciò significa il più delle volte
posti poco comodi e pericolosi.
Fu proprio per riuscire in questo
suo intento che, dopo il primo
viaggio e in previsione di altri
Quilici riuscì a mettere insieme
una troupe di sei o sette
elementi, molto ben affiatati, che
rimasero sempre gli stessi per
moltissimi anni di lavoro.
Dopo l'Africa, seguirono una
serie di otto puntate di un'ora
sulla storia dell'India; poi
un'altra sulla storia dell'Islam.
Quello dell'India fu un lavoro
straordinario, sia per la bellezza
dei luoghi, che per la scoperta di
una civiltà e di una elevatezza
spirituale uniche al mondo.
Filmammo episodi di vita
quotidiana usi, costumi, luoghi
sacri, templi, cerimonie religiose
che oggi, con i cambiamenti
politici e sociali che si sono
verificati in circa vent'anni,
sarebbe impossibile rifilmare.
Per tornare alla pericolosità dei
viaggi, fù in quell'occasione che,
durante un'escursione
nell'interno del paese e
trovandoci in uno stato di totale
mancanza di viveri, mangiai una
scatoletta di carne comprata in
un mercatino locale (forse una
rimanenza di qualche spedizione
Quilici, because of his nature, has never liked filming things that are
within everyone's reach (stufffor the tourists, he says). Therefore, to film
his documentaries, we have always gone to the most remote and
inaccessible places, preferably unknown or, at least, rarely frequented by
the majority, which means, for the most part, places that are primitive
and dangerous.
It was precisely to enable him to succeed in his intent that, after the first
trip, Quilici assembled a crew of about six or seven people, all of whom
worked very well together, to go on the subsequent trips, and we have
been filming as a team now, for a considerable number of years.
After our African experience, we filmed an eight-part series on the history
of India; then, another on the history of Islam.
The series in India was a magnificent experience, mainly due to the
breathtakingly beautiful locations, and the culture and spirituality of the
Indian her people that has to be unique in the world
We filmed their customs and ways, episodes of daily life, holy places,
temples and religious ceremonies that, with the social and political
changes that have occurred over the last twenty years or so, would be
impossible to film today.
To return to the danger inherent in these trips, it was while we were
journeying into the heart of India, and found ourselves without food, that
late a tin of canned meat, (probably left behind by some Himalayan
expedition) that I had managed to find in a local market
The results were disastrous: in a few hours, I was in bed with cholera and
running a high fever. Luckily, I had only contracted a mild form of the
disease, as I had been vaccinated before leaving and was, therefore,
immunised to some extent Nevertheless, I was confined to bed for about
