Avventura per
professione
Quanto sto per scrivere è
soprattutto dedicato ai giovani
che, amanti dell'avventura,
intendono intraprendere la
professione del cineoperatore.
Ci sono molti modi di affrontare
il proprio lavoro, c'è chi lo fà in
maniera pacata e ragionata,
scegliendo un lavoro d'ufficio o
altro pur sempre sedentario, e
chi invece, per scelta o per caso,
si trova ad affrontarlo in
maniera per così dire più o
meno movimentata. C'è infine
chi lo fà vivendo una continua
avventura.
10 ritengo di appartenere a
quest'ultima categoria di
persone.
Tutto cominciò circa venticinque
anni fa, quando un giovane e
affermato regista, che aveva già
girato diversi film di successo,
mi prese come assistente
operatore (il direttore della
fotografia era il caro amico Aldo
Nascimben) per filmare una
serie di documentari sull'Africa
per conto della RAI.
11 lavoro si preannunciava assai
duro e pericoloso, come lui
stesso ci tenne a precisare prima
della partenza, e come in effetti
si dimostrò essere durante i tre
mesi di lavorazione girando in
lungo e in largo tutta l'Africa.
Come dicevo, la mia avventura
cominciò venticinque anni fa e
What I'm about to write is dedicated, above all, to young people who love
adventure, and intend to become Directors of Photography.
There are many ways of approaching one's work. Some people go about it
in a calm, reasoned manner, opting for an office job, or something
similar, while others, by choice or by chance, find themselves doing
something fairly active. Then, there are people who choose to live a
continual adventure.
I believe that I belong to this last category.
It all started about 25 years ago, when a young director who had already
made a name for himself with several successful films, hired me as
assistant cameraman (our dear friend Aldo Nascimben was the Director
of Photography) on a series of documentaries he was going to shoot in
Africa for the RAI.
The assignment promised to be both tough and dangerous, which he
himself pointed out to us before we set off. And the three months of
shooting, which took us the entire length and breadth of Africa, proved to
be just that.
As I said, this adventure of mine began 25 years ago, and is still
continuing, because since that that first job as assistant cameraman and
on all the others that followed as Director of Photography, I have always
worked with that same Director.
His name is Folco Quilici Everyone who knows him, and has followed his
extraordinary career, is fully aware of the kind of journeys he
undertakes, and in which parts of the globe.
On that first job in Africa, I found myself standing a few feet away from
prides of lions, herds of elephants and other ferocious animals, which was
a totally new experience for me! I also entered into contact with some of
the extremely primitive tribes, and began to understand the customs and
