AIC
come categoria. Sono riusciti a
crearsi un potente organismo
sindacale che li tutela in maniera
capillare ed autorevole e che
stabilisce persino difese d'ufficio,
minimi sindacali, diritti sui
passaggi televisivi e sui
merchandising. Insomma tutte
quelle garanzie che ormai sono
patrimonio di qualsiasi
lavoratore nel mondò e che
invece, per gli sceneggiatori
italiani, ignorati dai
rappresentanti politici e dai
sindacati della nostra industria,
sembrano conquiste utopiche ed
impensabili. (Gito fra tutte lo
scandaloso intrallazzo di stampo
mafioso sui molteplici passaggi
televisivi di un film che
rimpingua sotanto i produttori,
le emittenti ed i pubblicitari e
che non solo si svolge
indipendentemente dalla volontà
degli autori, ma anche a loro
danno, perché non ne ricavano
alcun compenso) Oltre queste
basilari forme di tutela non ho
altri entusiasmi nei confronti del
cinema americano, anzi.
Dobbiamo stare molto attenti a
questo traguardo. Finora non
have to be very, very careful. So far, due to the slender possibilities of our
own market, we haven't been able to match the high budgets of our
American rivals, but, intstead, have been obliged to ape the concepts and
language of their films, thus positioning ourselves — as far as commercial
cinema is concerned — as low-cos substitutes for American films. In 1992,
our potential market will be bigger than the American market, and we
will finally be in position to compete. We are a continent which has
different cultures to draw on, languages, points of reference and
opportunities. We have our own particular identity, and we need no
longer feel obliged to imitate other people's cinema. The public should
have the possibility of seeing European films which are both aware and
true to themselves. We will finally be able to analyse our own problems,
explore our own situations, propose our own themes, and create our own
narrative rhythms. The challenge is to express ourselves as we really are,
and the only way to meet it is to do just thai
q. You have no fear than, that a United Europe, which will inevitably
result in the homologization of the different cultures, will impoverish
Italian culture?
a. No, I don't thing it's possible. We have succeeded in creating a certain
identity for ourselves in the world, reaching the highest levels in both the
artistic and technological fields, and this enables us to assume a
well-defined role in Europe. We have done great things in the past, and I
don't think I am being presumptuous when I say that we have what it
takes to become the maestros of European Cinema. Fortunately, we have
left films in dialect and stupid comedies behind us, and we can now up
the quality and move towards a way of expressing ourselves in the
Cinema (some authors and directors have already begun to do this) in a
way which could be our winning card: communicating totally, but in a
potendo coprire, data l'esiguità
del nostro mercato, i costi di un
film secondo i modelli
americani, siamo stati costretti a
scimmiottare il cinema USA se
non nei.budgets almeno nei
linguaggi e nelle ideologie,
ponendoci così — parlo sempre a
livello di cinema industriale —
come succedanei a basso costo
dei loro prodotti. Con il 1992
avremo un potenziale mercato
più grande del loro e potremo
finalmente ritenerci competitivi.
Noi abbiamo culture, linguaggi,
punti di riferimento, occasioni
differenti: siamo un continente
con una precisa, comune
identità, e nessuno potrà più
obbligarci a fare il cinema degli
altri.
Il pubblico dovrebbe poter
vedere la cinematografia
europea nella sua
consapevolezza e nella sua verità.
Potremo finalmente rivendicare i
nostri ritmi narrativi, le nostre
problematiche, le nostre
situazioni e i nostri temi. Questa
è la grande sfida: la possibilità di
vincerla è in questa
personalizzazione,
d. Lei non ha timore che invece
ci sia uno svilimento delle
caratteristiche all'interno del
patrimonio culturale a causa di
questa unità europea che creerà
inevitabilmente una
omologazione delle culture?
r. Non credo che ciò possa
avvenire. Come italiani abbiamo
alcune caratteristiche di identità
che ci sono state riconosciute
nel mondo: siamo ai più alti
livelli artistici e tecnici ed
abbiamo quindi la possibilità di
svolgere, nell'ambito dell'Europa,
un ruolo con caratteristiche ben
determinate. Abbiamo, infatti,
precedenti illustrissimi e, senza
peccare di presunzione,
possiamo diventare i maestri del
cinema europeo.
Fortunatamente siamo già usciti
dalla banale standardizzazione
del cinema dialettale o di pura
evasione e potremo felicemente
avviarci (alcuni autori e registi lo
hanno già dimostrato) verso
quella che potrebbe essere la
nostra carta vincente:
personalità nella comunicazione
totale senza dimenticare la
nostra identità culturale e le
nostre radici. Fare cioè delle
storie italiane ed europee che
siano però nelle tematiche, nei
sentimenti e nell'affabulazione,
universali.
d. Alla fine di quest'intervista mi
sembra doveroso chiederle
anche che relazione c'è tra
sceneggiatore e fotografia, o
meglio tra le sceneggiatura e
l'immagine fotografica di un
film?
r. Abbiamo parlato finora dello
scrivere cinema, risponderò
allora con un paragone
editoriale. Rispetto allo scrittore
il direttore della fotografia è il
tipografo. È colui che compone a
mano le singole lettere, che
sceglie il supporto e l'intensità
della pressione da imprimere sui
caratteri. È insomma l'artigiano,
straordinario e magnifico, che
rende la mia creazione un
oggetto: è colui che scrive con la
luce ciò che io ho immaginato.
personal way, without forgetting either our cultural identity or our roots.
In other words, making films that have Italian or European stories, but
express themes and feelings on a universal level, in a universal manner.
q. Before we end the interview, I think I should ask you what the
relationship is between the scriptwriter and the photography, or rather
between the script and the cinematographic image?
a. As we been talking about writing for the cinema all along, I will make
a comparison that concerns printing. Compared to the scriptwriter, I see
the Director of Photography as a compositor. He is the person who
composes the single "letters" and decides upon the intensity with which
the "characters " are to be printed. In other words, he is that extraordinary
and wonderful craftsman, who realizes what I have created, as a film: he
"writes " what I have imagined, with the light.
