"Santa Sangre" quanti potrebbero provarla?"
Nasce così il soggetto. Poi, un
giorno accade di raccontarlo ad
un produttore, ad un regista
amico, ad un attore. Se interessa,
qualcuno di loro mi chiede di
dettagliarlo e specificarlo negli
ambienti e nei personaggi.
Questo è il trattamento, che
nella maggior parte dei casi è già
"verbal" score of a film, in which the narrative rhythms and characters
have already been established, together with the particular quality of the
images, the nuances of dialogue and the sounds, all of which go to make
up the finished film. I would compare the scriptwriter to a musical
composer, the director to an orchestral conductor, the actors to the various
soloists or singers, and the technicians to the members of the orchestra. It
has sometimes happened that whoever has conducted my "music", has in
no way respected the rhythms, nuances, light and shade that I have
created Or that the story has been stripped of its political or social
content, and has either had merely a "mechanical"function, or become
something to play with. What I experienced then was a sense of helpless
frustration as, right or wrong, I believe myself to be author of a script
which it is the director's job to interpret and respect, and not rework as he
pleases. Let me be more precise: we have to clear up, once and for all, the
misunderstanding (typically Italian, as it was born during the great
period of neorealism) that all directors are authors. In reality, those few
directors who actually write their films can claim to be authors. All the
others are simply "realizers", but they believe that because they are
directors, this automatically makes them the authprs and, instead of
interpreting the script, they change it indiscriminately, using it as a
narrative pretext for a chimerical film without substance, for which they
take complete credit, and consider to be their eocclusive property.
q. You claim that the scriptwriter is the author of a film; but what about
when the script is taken to be a basic outline, a mere guide to the film's
realization?
a. I'm sorry, but that really makes me smile! It totally confirms that
unfortunate habit I've just mentioned What you're saying can happen
with the first draft of a script for a certain type of film created by a great
la storia vera e propria. Quando
questa storia riesce a diventare
film, allora partono i contratti e
cominciano le cadenze e gli
schemi della sceneggiatura:
privilegiare certe scene,
innescare e movimentare certe
situazioni che porteranno al
possibile finale; insomma
cadenzare il senso della storia
nella sua valenza di archetipo e
di verosimiglianza,
d. Le è mai capitato di entrare in
una sala cinematografica e di
trovarsi di fronte ad un suo film
completamente diverso da come
lei lo aveva immaginato? Che
emozione ha provato e che cosa
era accaduto, quale è insomma il
rapporto tra sceneggiatore e
regista?
r. Ritengo che lo scrittore di
cinema sia l'autore di quello
spartito di parole che fa un film;
la sua scrittura, nel copione,
contiene già i ritmi narrativi, i
personaggi, le caratteristiche
delle immagini, i dettagli dei
dialoghi e dei suoni che
compongono l'opera finita.
Vorrei paragonare lo
sceneggiatore al compositore di
un brano musicale di cui il
regista sarà il direttore
d'orchestra, gli attori i vari
interpreti o i solisti e i tecnici gli
orchestrali. Qualche volta è
accaduto che colui che ha
eseguito la mia "musica" lo ha
fatto secondo ritmi, cadenze e
colori completamente diversi da
quelli che io avevo immaginato.
Oppure la storia è stata
scarnificata dalle valenze sociali
o politiche che vi avevo immesso
ed ha funzionato soltanto come
"macchinetta" o puro gioco
narrativo. Quello che ho provato
è stata una disperata sensazione
d'impotenza perché, a torto o a
ragione, mi ritengo l'autore di
un'opera che il regista dovrebbe
rispettare ed interpretare, non
rielaborare a suo piacimento. Mi
spiego meglio: si dovrebbe
eliminare una volta per tutte il
famoso equivoco (tipicamente
italiano perché ci viene dalla
grande stagione dei
neorealismo) per cui
qualunque regista è autore. In
realtà ci sono soltanto alcuni
registi che sono degli autori
perché scrivono la sceneggiatura
dei loro film e poi c'è una serie
di semplici realizzatori che,
arrogandosi una sorta di diritto
di qualifica (sono regista
quindi automaticamente
autore), imperversano
indiscriminatamente sulla
sceneggiatura non per
interpretarla, ma per farne un
pretesto narrativo di un
fantomatico e chimerico film di
loro esclusivo merito e proprietà,
d. Lei rivendica la concezione di
scrittore per il cinema come
autore; cosa ne pensa allora del
fatto che la sceneggiatura spesso
viene letta come una grande
intenzione, come un'indicazione
per la realizzazione di un film?
r. Mi permetta di sorridere a
questa sua affermazione che è la
prova lampante del malcostume
che ho appena esposto. Quanto
lei dice può accadere con la
prima stesura della
sceneggiatura di determinati film
di grandi registi e autori, ma,
nella quotidiana realtà di
un'industria culturale quale
appunto è il cinema, considerare
la sceneggiatura come
indicazione o grande intenzione
è un'utopia da intellettuali di
cineforum. Non solo perché oggi
director or author, but to consider that the script functions as a basic
outline or guide, in a cultural industry like the cinema, is about as
unrealistic as the Utopian dreams expressed by intellectuals at a cinema
forum! Not only because a script is the basis for international
agreements, financing, budgets and contracts, but also because, in most
cases, the director is either chosen, or accepts the film, on the basis of the
pre-existing script.
q. This being the case, would you say that the Italian scriptwriter has
complete creative freedom on a project?
a. Inside every producer there is a scriptwriter waiting to get out, so as
soon as one of them buys a script, he immediately starts rewriting it,
practically becoming the author. Almost every director who realizes a
film, automatically presumes to be the author and wants to restructure it
The truth is, one has to try and preserve the film's identity, while
attempting to meet the demands of the producer who is constantly
preoccupied with cost and marketing problems, and the director who is
torn between a desire to please the critics and the public. Ideally, the
scriptwriter should be able to satisfy both In reality, he is limited to
creating the story the way the producer and director have perceived it
This also happens because, for some time now, the majority of producers
haven't risked their own money in films, but have merely acted as
brokers who, at most, risk T. V. rights, the advance payments they succeed
in obtaining from their Foreign Sales Managers, and the few lira they are
able to squeeze out of the Italian distributor. In effect, today's producer is
an intermediary and, as such, no longer has the power either to choose, or
impose his wishes. He is basically a spokesman for his three tyrannical
clients (television network, foreign and Italian distributor) who demand
a certain type of product, which is the most stereotyped and most suitable
