What are we expecting
from Ice Europe 2011?

All converting operators’ attention is now focused on the forthcoming ICE Europe 2001,
the largest and most important conversion industry trade fair, which will be held from
the 8th to the 10th of November in the new Munich Trade Fair Centre venue. The organisers
have released the following statistical information, which is literally reported below:
an exhibition area of 9,800 sqm. with 380 exhibitors coming from 22 foreign countries
(over 40% of companies come from countries other than Germany), a 16% increase
compared to the previous edition, which is made up by first time exhibitors. Some of the top participating
countries are Italy, Holland, France, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the US. This ICE Europe
2011 edition, like other industry events, is regarded as an indicator by the converting professionals, who
are all keen to find new solutions focused on energy efficiency, raw material usage reduction, sustainable
production and biodegradable material processing. Currently, industrial processes are heavily affected
by the shortage of raw materials and by higher energy costs; converting operators are all eager to
find solutions in the trade fair which might allow them to tackle the problems they are facing in this current
global recession. From the profile of the companies exhibiting at the ICE Europe 2011, it transpires
that they are clearly focused on using flexible and conversion materials such as paper, films, foils, nonwovens.
Exhibitors will display their latest equipment: drying, cutting, finishing and flexo printing machines
and equipment. Visitors will be able to take a peek at a wide range of new and improved technologies
and solutions for processing and converting flexible materials.
We wish a successful event to all exhibitors, professionals and visitors and, last but not least, the trade
fair organisers.

ICE Europe 2011, la più grande e importante manifestazione internazionale per l'industria
della trasformazione, che si svolgerà dall'8 al 10 novembre prossimo nella
nuova sede del Munich Trade Fair Centre. Gli organizzatori hanno snocciolato alcuni
dati che riprendiamo pari pari: una superficie espositiva di 9.800 mq. con 380

al di fuori dalla Germania), e con un incremento del 16% rispetto alla precedente edizione, si tratta di
aziende che vi partecipano per la prima volta. Le presenze più significative provengono dall'Italia,Olanda,
Francia, Svizzera, Gran Bretagna e dagli USA. Anche questa edizione di ICE Europe 2011, come le
altre manifestazioni del settore, è vista come un termometro dai professionisti del converting, che chiedono
a gran voce di trovare nuove soluzioni che si concentrino sull'efficienza energetica, sulla riduzione
delle materie prime, sulla produzione sostenibile e sulla lavorazione di materiali biodegradabili. Attualmente
i processi di lavorazione sono molto influenzati dalla scarsità delle materie prime e dai crescenti
costi energetici; gli operatori del converting sono ansiosi di scoprire le soluzioni migliori presenti in fiera,
che consentino loro di far fronte alle problematiche di questo periodo di crisi mondiale. Il profilo, delineatosi
dalle aziende espositrici di ICE Europe 2011, lascia intravedere una chiara focalizzazione su materiali
flessibili e di trasformazione come la carta, i film, i laminati, i materiali non tessuti. Le aziende espositrici
presenteranno le loro ultime creature: macchine e attrezzature per l'essiccazione, il taglio la finitura
e la stampa flessografica. I visitatori potranno ammirare un'ampia gamma di nuove e migliorate tecnologie
e soluzioni per la lavorazione trasformazione di materiali flessibili.
Non ci resta che augurare a tutti gli espositori, i professionisti i visitatori e non ultimi gli organizzatori un
buon lavoro e una buona riuscita.

quick turnaround times in variable data printing
on different substrates and formats. The
quality of the contacts was consistently high

Atlantic Zeiser demonstrated at Labelexpo
the versatility of drop-on-demand (DoD) inkjet
printing technology in security printing and
commercial label printing on different label
materials and formats.
On an integrated complete solution, Digiline
Web 300, the company highlighted the technology’s
versatility by using a high-speed
Delta 105i greyscale printer, a Gamma 70 P
four-colour inkjet printer and a Vericam camera-based
verification system.
The solutions on show offer outstanding cost
efficiency, machine availability and security,
and will focus on the ability to switch quickly
between print jobs. This enables users to
exploit new business opportunities in a host
of industry applications.
The digital printing solutions are also ideal for
late-stage customisation – coding and marking
at the latest possible stage in the workflow.
Atlantic Zeiser system solutions include
inkjet printing modules, Uv inks developed
in-house, air and water-cooled Uv Led curing
units, and solutions for product verification.
Practical examples at Labelexpo 2011
Securely printing, coding and marking labels
and packaging is a complex process that
must take into account a range of stringent
requirements.
Atlantic Zeiser will use Labelexpo to demonstrate
specific applications, showing visitors
how to code tax labels and excise stamps
with common, individual barcodes and plaintext
information at speeds of up to 150
m/min, always on the same transport unit.
The challenge is to print the absorbent special
paper for tax labels at maximum speed
and to outstanding image quality, so the variable
data is easy to read for machines for
goods identification.
Atlantic Zeiser illustrated how to print from
roll to roll using the greyscale printer Delta
105i in the Digiline Web 300 complete solution.
The camera-based verification system,
Vericam, which is integrated in the system,
demonstrated how to check the quality of
printed data in real time, guaranteeing zerodefects
in the end product.
The second sample application is also a
practical one.
Atlantic Zeiser individually printed, marked
and coded from the roll industrial labels from
its partner, 3M, using the Delta 105i printing
module. The 3M labels are made from a liquid-repellent
special plastic used in the
chemical industry.
The third application involved four-colour digital
printing.
A Gamma 70 P, a full-colour printing module
for Cmyk inkjet printing, is installed in the
Digiline Web 300. Atlantic Zeiser used the
solution to print industrial labels for another
self-adhesive 3M high-performance film.
Both Delta and Gamma use Uv inks from Atlantic
Zeiser.
Visitors to Labelexpo saw the printers in action,
together with the complementary
Smartcure curing units.
Long-term partnership with 3M
The partnership with 3M, the industry's leading
manufacturer of high-performance label
materials, was another highlight of Labelexpo.
3M’s high-quality range of labels is the
perfect way for Atlantic Zeiser to complete
its product portfolio for UV inkjet label printing.
The trade fair saw Atlantic Zeiser showcase
3M’s new range of labels and use live
demonstrations to highlight the versatility of
these materials, which have been specially
developed for digital Uv inkjet printing.

Stampa roll-to-roll: Atlantic Zeiser ha dimostrato
la stampante a scala di grigi
Delta105i implementata nella soluzione completa
DIGILINE Web 300, che integra un sistema
di verifica con telecamera per garantire
una produzione priva di difetti.
Una seconda applicazione roll-to-roll è sta-
ta dimostrata da 3M, che utilizza il modulo di
stampa Delta105i per la stampa delle proprie
etichette 3M in plastica.
Una terza applicazione ha previsto la stampa
digitale inkjet a quattro colori. Un modulo
Gamma 70 P, per stampa Cmyk inkjet, era
installato sulla Digiline Web 300, per la stampa
industriale di etichette, utilizzando un supporto
autoadesivo 3M in film ad alte
prestazioni.

Labelexpo Europe 2011 has been really
satisfying for Omet, a lot of crowds visited
its booth and watched at all demonstrations
of the 3 presses on display. Interest
of visitors has been very high for all Omet news:
“We had great expectations from this year’s Labelexpo

press, the new offset group with sleeves in the
XFlex range, a breakthrough matrix removal unit

The XFlex X4, a totally new press with print
cylinders, belonging to the XFlex range, is inheriting
from its elder sister X6 an even shorter
web path, low wastage levels and simplicity

label converters since Labelexpo 2007.
The true revolution resides in the fact that this
cost-efficient press, perfect for beginners or
low budget converters, has twin servo-motors
on each print unit and integrates the pre- and
register system Vision-1.

Xeikon launches white paper on digital
brand protection printing at Labelexpo
Europe 2011. The 36-page
white paper offers a comprehensive overview
of the anti-counterfeiting techniques that can
be combined with digital printing technology
to combat the ever-increasing rise in
counterfeit goods across the globe.
Hundreds of brand protection and security
technologies are available on the market today,
yet only a few printers and converters
are really making any use of them. The aim
of the new white paper is to educate the
market on the many security capabilities that
are now available through digital printing, and
to show the need for all players in the packaging
supply chain to work together to build
an integrated brand protection solution.

Next evolution of counterfeit products present
real threat to society as a whole
Globalization has fueled the market for pirated
copies of branded goods ranging from
designer clothes and handbags, to watches
and sport shoes. Global lost revenues
through counterfeiting are said to be close
to $1.5 billion a year, or about 7-8% of world
trade. While this is of major impact on the
bottom line - and on brand value - the next
evolution of fake products that is coming on
the market presents a much greater threat:
fake medicine, fake vehicle spare parts and
fake pesticides.
Literally hundreds of people die, suffer health
problems or are injured each
year through ineffective or faulty
counterfeited goods such as
medicines, electrical products,
and household chemicals and
cosmetics that are harmful to
the skin and body.

lethal if they fail at high speed.

In the past, the primary role of
packaging has been to protect
and - when combined with
printing - to communicate the
brand message. Today, packaging
and printing can also be

The Xeikon Brand Protection
white paper offers an overview
of the latest anti-counterfeiting
techniques - both overt (visible)
and covert (hidden) - which can
be applied using Xeikon’s digital

1200dpi resolution (4 bit per

spot) delivered by the Xeikon presses enables
the printing of microtext, guilloches and
cryptoglyph patterns. Many of the latest security
substrates which are made with fluorescent

potential issues during the early stages of

reducing waste down the track. Studio Visualizer,
a powerful, virtual prototyping tool
allows to share hyper realistic ideas and designs
with clients early in the process to gain

Store Visualizer allows users to envision
hyper realistic store shelves simulations,

in Studio and Visualizer. This new tool adds

A raft of new features in EskoArtwork's prepress
editors are also be presented. ArtPro
10.1 comes with significantly faster and
higher quality trapping for easy preparation
of print-ready packaging artwork production
files. DeskPack 10.1 detects errors as
early as possible, reducing the cost to a
minimum and enabling prepress operators
to produce higher quality jobs in a shorter
time. PackEdge 10.1 uses quality control

as an online medium to share 3D
mockups with their clients, make changes
to the artwork immediately and gain approval
quickly and efficiently.
At the heart of the Digital Print Workshops
EskoArtwork has been an enthusiastic driver
of the Digital Print Workshops since its
first edition during Labelexpo Chicago last
year. The ultimate challenge continues at this
year’s edition in Brussels with three competing
digital printing technologies (Xeikon
dry toner, HP liquid toner and EFI inkjet) lined
up alongside each other to run the same label

Amcor Flexibles in Ledbury have invested
in a Star Proof and Epson Stylus
Pro WT7900 solution to bring high
quality proofing in-house.
The system which was installed in early 2011
produces colour accurate halftone proof
samples for both customer and internal print
requirements. The integration which was carried
out by Graphic Republik, accurately
replicates on the proof how the final printed
piece will look. When used in conjunction
with Star Proof, the Epson Stylus Pro
WT7900 is capable of producing the highest
quality halftone proofs from the same
ripped data that is used to make the final
press plate. Using the WT7900’s White ink
and ClearProof film combination, Star Proof
is calibrated to produce a halftone proof of
the press condition whilst utilizing data from
colour and ink sequence through to ink hue,
white opacity and dot gain. Commenting on

EskoArtwork has revolutionized the
flexographic printing industry with

years ago. HD Flexo has brought to flexographic
printing a quality level that could
previously only be achieved with offset or
rotogravure printing processes.
HD Flexo today has evolved to be the new

HD Flexo: the new standard
HD Flexo combines 4000 dpi HD optics
with unique screening technologies to take
advantage of sharper and more accurate
imaging.
The result is outstanding print quality with
a straightforward plate production process,
with the high-resolution optics delivering
more accurate, sharper imaging of text and
line art, sharper images, smoother tints
and a greater color gamut.
The aim of HD Flexo is to increase flexo
printing quality and be a viable alternative
to offset and gravure printing. In the past,
gravure achieved smoother images, a
wider tonal range and a higher color density
when compared with flexo.
With HD Flexo, the screen rulings in flexo
can be increased, while at the same time
reducing the size of the smallest printable
dot.
Users of HD Flexo have also confirmed that
they are able to reproduce the full tonal
range of offset. In addition, they attest that
it is possible to achieve greater run lengths
and fewer washing cycles.

A key market driver behind the development
was the demand from printers and
converters to improve the shadow performance
of their prints.
The Microcell screening technology which
is an integral part of HD Flexo improves ink
transfer and performance of the plate in
shadow and solid areas.
“It is not only about the dots,” says Juergen
Andresen, EskoArtwork vice president,
Flexo Business. “Printing is about the
whole tonal range and over the past two
years there has been a lot of interest in getting
high performance in shadow areas
where there’s high color saturation, especially
when using solvent based inks. Another

We live in a changing world of package
printing, where traditional
methods of production are being
challenged by new and exciting technology
that offers a variety of benefits to the printer
and converter.
Nowhere is this more obvious than in the
market for labels and flexible packaging – up
to now, two distinct markets with their own
production methods, but now coming together
thanks to the opportunities offered by
emerging technology.
The move is towards mid web technology.
For label printers, the move from narrow web
is simple, and immediately opens market opportunities
with new products. But those
same opportunities exist for wide web flexo,
CI flexo, gravure, and sheetfed offset press
users too.
The mid web inline technology is exciting and
appealing to convertors as it allows to
achieve the following challenges with much
ease!
- Process short and medium length work
more cost effectively
- Handle PS labels, unsupported films upto
12 microns, and carton board upto 700
microns with equal ease
- Lower pre press cost as compared to wide
web flexo and gravure
- Ability to combine flexo, offset, gravure,
digital and screen all in one pass
- Complex inline finishing processes, such
as lamination, cold foil, holograms insertion
- Extremely fast turnaround capability that
improves margins and beats the competition
in time-to-market
On the Omet VaryFlex, both set up and
changeover times are faster, which means
lower costs and less downtime. Plate costs
are lower because they are smaller, and with
its combination of print processes, the Omet
VaryFlex offers a far higher degree of flexibility
on shorter runs.
By comparison, on a typical CI flexo press,
set up and changeover times are slower and
more costly because of the physical size of
the press. This result is higher plate costs
because they are wider, and the lack of comparative
flexibility means CI flexo is best suited
for long run work. A clear win for Omet!
This scenario repeats itself when we compare
an Omet VaryFlex press with a typical
rotogravure machine. All of the advantages
of the Omet VaryFlex mentioned above remain
the same.
In contrast, the gravure press is slower to set
up and changeover, which affects costs, it
requires expensive cylinders instead of
cheaper plates, it offers less flexibility in terms
of colour sequence and configuration, and
is highly dependent on service providers, especially
engravers. Another win for Omet!
If we look at the ink situation, a similar pattern
emerges between UV and Solvent use.
The case for UV inks is strong. There are no
harmful VOC emission problems, making
them environmentally ‘green’ and easy to
store. They do not require an incineration
system. They are easy to
clean on-press, which reduces
time and cost, and
prolongs the life of plates
and anilox rolls. They do
not dry during machine
stoppages and consistently
print a much finer dot for
better print quality. In combination
with lamination,
they offer new opportunities
in the market for food packaging.
Although initially appearing
more expensive to
buy than SB inks, UV inks
are more cost effective
overall.

unit allows converters to bond two different

films into one. In the case of PET and BOPP,
which are less heat sensitive and more stable,
the adhesive can be applied with a flexo
unit, whereas with LDPE, which is heat sensitive,
a gravure unit is needed for the adhesive
application.
The Omet inline UV laminating unit for M-PET
and holograms allows converters to laminate
PET film or metallised foils onto virgin board
before printing, enhancing the colours and
giving the overall appearance more sparkle
with the metal reflections or holograms.
Cold seal, for so long a process of the wide
web industry, has gained a new lease of life
with Omet.
The ability to specify a press configuration
that combines flexo with gravure opens opportunities

where in the case of ice cream or chocolate
products, which are heat sensitive, a layer of
adhesive can be applied to the reverse side
of the film and reactivated downstream during
the packaging process. This technique
is only possible in one pass if produced on
an inline combination press, like the Omet

other special finishing in one pass.

side of the aluminium or paper substrate

Viviamo in un mondo in continuo cambiamento,
dove i metodi produttivi per
la stampa di imballaggio sono sottoposti
alle sfide delle nuove tecnologie che offrono
una varietà di benefici allo stampatore e
al converter.
Non c'è settore dove questa situazione si mostri
in maniera più evidente come nel mercato
delle etichette e del packaging flessibile - finora
due mercati di settori distinti con i loro metodi
produttivi, ma che oggi si uniscono grazie
alle opportunità offerte dalle emergenti tecnologie.
Il cambiamento è indirizzato verso la stampa
su mid-web. Per gli stampatori di etichette il
passaggio dal nastro stretto al mid-web è semplice
e apre immediatamente delle opportunità
di mercato con nuovi prodotti. Ma quelle
stesse opportunità esistono anche per gli utilizzatori
di macchine flessografiche a banda
larga, flexo a tamburo centrale, rotocalco e offset
con alimentazione a fogli.
La stampa in linea su mid-web è di forte impatto
e attrae un vasto numero di converter
per le seguenti caratteristiche:
- la sua capacità di realizzare lavori con tirature
brevi e medie a costi più ridotti

e batte la concorrenza nei tempi di proposta
al mercato
Paragoniamo per esempio la produzione in linea
con la stampa a tamburo centrale flexo
usando una Omet VaryFlex.
Sulla Varyflex sia i tempi di messa a punto che
di cambio lavoro sono più rapidi, il che significa
costi più bassi e tempi di fermo macchina
inferiori. I costi per i cliché si riducono perché
sono più piccoli di dimensione e, con la
combinazione dei processi di stampa, la Vary-
Flex offre un grado di flessibilità molto più elevato
su tirature più brevi.
Dal confronto emerge che su una macchina
flexo a tamburo centrale i tempi di setup e di
cambio lavoro sono più lenti e più costosi. Inoltre
vi sono costi più elevati per i cliché perché
sono più grandi, e la mancanza di flessibilità
dal punto di vista della combinazione con altri
processi di stampa, pertanto la Omet Vary-
Flex risulta molto più competitive per le piccole
tirature. Una chiara vittoria per Omet!
Questo scenario si ripete quando paragoniamo
la nostra VaryFlex con una macchina tipica
a rotocalco. Tutti i vantaggi della VaryFlex
sopra citati restano gli stessi. Per contro, la
macchina rotocalco è più lenta nella messa a
punto e nei cambi lavoro, cosa che influisce
sui costi; richiede cilindri costosi invece di cliché
più economici; offre meno flessibilità in termini
di sequenza dei colori e configurazione
ed è altamente dipendente dai fornitori di servizi,
soprattutto gli incisori.
Se guardiamo la situazione degli inchiostri,
emerge un modello simile tra l'uso degli UV e
del solvente.
Il caso degli inchiostri UV è forte. Non ci sono
problemi di emissioni dannose di VOC e
questo li rende ecologicamente "verdi" e facili
da immagazzinare. Non richiedono sistemi di
incenerimento. Sono facili da pulire in macchina,
riducendo così tempi e costi e prolungando
la durata dei cliché e dei cilindri anilox.
Non asciugano durante i fermi macchina e
stampano con consistenza punti molto più fini
con una migliore qualità di stampa. Abbinati
alla laminazione offrono nuove opportunità
sul mercato del packaging per alimenti.
Sebbene all'inizio sembrino più costosi da acquistare
rispetto agli inchiostri a solvente, gli
inchiostri UV sono globalmente meno cari.
Diano infine un'occhiata alla tecnologia del
converting e della finitura. Qui è dove si può
vedere davvero il vantaggio della Omet Vary-

a global agreement to market
a series of print adapters and
adapters for CDI imaging manufactured by
Inometa, as part of the DuPont Cyrel round
flexographic printing workflow.
The Inometa compressible adapters are specially
designed to optimize the performance
of both Cyrel round Thin sleeves and Cyrel
Fast round Thin sleeves, and provide excellent
register accuracy, low dot gain and outstanding
print quality from
run to run. Made of precision
fiberglass, they are
engineered to be sturdy
and smooth running with
minimal run-out; ideal for
today’s high performance,
high speed presses. The
adapters have a rubber
stop and bayonet locking
system for superior handling

MaxColor, the latest development in
the MaxPro suite of Prepress applications,
has been shortlisted in
the Prepress innovation category for the Flexotech
awards 2011.The award ceremony,
which to be held at the London Hilton last
17th october is one of the most prestigious
international events and is sponsored by
leading companies in the industry.
MaxColor is an option within the MaxPro
suite of appications. It has been developed
to help reduce the amount of inks/print stations
used on press by changing/replacing
existing colours. The overall benefits include
increased image colour vibrancy, lower ink
usage and better registration (due to reduced
print stations). MaxColor offers the following
features:
1) Internal colour conversion via MaxColor
Profile - MaxColor profiles are generated from
industry standard colour libraries (e.g. Pantone)
or custom spot colours, using the LAB
values as reference. The resultant MaxColor
profile is used to convert a) Rgb/Cmyk Tiff
images or b) MaxPro files which can include
text as well as images. In the case of Max-
Pro files, the user has the choice of whether
to convert image only, text only or both.
2) Post conversion editing - Once the file has

form of a Dot Gain Curve library which can
be changed on-the-fly, without the need to
re-calibrate. This feature also accepts Star
Proof calibration chart readings allowing
users to import Star Proof calibration curves
with ink hue and dot gain information.
4) Color Library - MaxPro/MaxColor allows
users to import multiple color libraries for use
in color conversion and on-screen viewing.
Custom Spot colors such as those created
from ink draw-downs on different materials
can also be imported to assist in accurate
on-screen color rendition. A Silver Metallic
Pro option was also shortlisted in the Prepress
innovtion category. Silver Metallic Pro
is an option to MaxPro, developed to automatically
produce either White Ink separations
for printing Uv offset/flexo or gravure
on metallic foil, or for producing silver ink
separations. Once images are converted, a
Metallic View feature enables the user to
check the result while adjusting the light reflection
intensity and angle to simulate the
print ink and material combinations.

immagini attraverso le curve di separazione
colore individuali o la correzione colore
selettiva di colori combinati. Uno strumento
di controllo colore consente all’utente
di monitorare le variazioni effettuate mentre
la funzione di confronto immagine consente
una vista in tempo reale delle modifiche
in anteprima.

3) Calibrazione monitor, profilo e curva tonale
del display - MaxColor fornisce un processo
integrato di calibrazione del monitor
che è stato sviluppato per riprodurre più accuratamente
sia i colori Cmyk che la resa dei
colori spot rispetto a quanto possibile con i
profili ICC standard.
Il sistema consente di simulare a schermo gli
effetti di diverse caratteristiche di stampa, inchiostri
e supporti tramite diverse curve di
dot gain, gestite in libreria, che possono essere
applicate al volo senza la necessità di
ulteriori calibrazioni. Questa funzione accetta
le letture dei chart da Star Proof e consente
all’utente di importare le curve di calibrazione
con informazioni sul dot gain e tinta
dell’inchiostro.
4) Libreria colore - MaxPro/MaxColor consente
all’utente di importare diverse librerie
colore da utilizzare nella conversione colore
e per l’anteprima a schermo. I colori spot

personalizzati come quelli creati da tirelle o
diversi materiali possono essere altresì importati
per consentire una migliore resa colore
a schermo.
Anche l’opzione Silver Metallic Pro è stata
selezionata nella categoria delle innovazioni
per la prestampa.
Silver Metallic Pro è un’opzione di MaxPro
sviluppata per produrre automaticamente le
separazioni del bianco per la stampa su supporti
metallizzati in flexo, offset o rotocalco
oppure per realizzare la separazione per inchiostri
coprenti metallizzati.
Dopo che le immagini sono state convertite
la funzione di anteprima Metallic View consente
all’utente di controllare i risultati sullo
schermo tramite la regolazione dell’intensità
di riflessione l’angolo di illuminazione per simulare
l’effetto delle combinazioni di inchiostro
e supporto.
