Die Tiroler Landesfürstin Margarete (1318-
1369) gehört zu den bekanntesten Frauengestalten
der Tiroler Geschichte, wozu ihr in
seiner Bedeutung nicht restlos geklärter Beiname
„Maultasch“ und ihr von einer späteren
Geschichtsschreibung negativ verzerrtes Bild
viel beigetragen haben.
Als lasterhaftes Weib und
untreue Ehefrau wurde sie
beschrieben, als absurd hässliche
Frau bildlich dargestellt.
dissoluta e sposa infedele raffigurandola come
regnante medievale, sposa, madre e vedova.
l’imperatore, provocando
con tale atto, in grave
contrasto con tutte le
convenzioni del tempo,
uno scandalo di portata
„internazionale“. Pesanti
furono gli effetti causati
dalla conseguente scomunica
che per ben 17
anni gravò su di lei e sul
Tirolo.
Se per molteplici motivi
il bando politico subìto
incide fortemente sulla
vita di Margareta, la sua
personalità non può tuttavia
essere ridotta soltanto
a tale aspetto.

Margareth, Countess of Tyrol,
lived from 1318 to 1369 and is
one of the most prominent female
fi gures in the history of the region.
The origin of her unfortunate
byname “Maultasch” or “pocket
mouth” has never been satisfactorily
explained although a number
of later unfl attering pictures of her
do little to improve her image.
She has been described in various
distorted ways, as an extremely
unattractive, vicious, wicked woman
and unfaithful wife and yet, the
reason for these defamations is
much disputed. Was she really
so ugly as to deserve the byname “pocket
mouth” and was she really so devious and
cunning as some of her critics would have
us believe? Her true biography describes her
otherwise and shows us a medieval countess,
wife, mother and widow. Her life however
was anything but “normal” and a cruel destiny
awaited her. At the early age of twelve and
as sole heiress to the county of Tyrol with its
many enviable dominions, she found herself
married to a Bohemian crown prince in order
to safeguard the future of a prestigious dynasty.
After years of unhappy married life, she
separated from her fi rst husband and married
Ludwig, the emperor’s son. Her defi ance of
convention led to an international scandal.
The church in Rome refused to recognise
the legitimacy of this second marriage and
Margareth was summarily excommunicated,
something which brought great suffering to
the whole region of Tyrol for the following
seventeen years.
The politically motivated ban
weighed heavily on her life, but
this should not be the focal
point in judging her personality.
Her children all died at an early
age and her beloved Tyrol was
affl icted by various dire calamities
including the Black Death,
a number of earthquakes and a
plague of locusts to name just
a few. Her second husband and
their son and heir, Meinhard,
also died unexpectedly; thus
she was forced to hand over her
domain to her closest relatives,
the powerful Habsburg dynasty.
This decision set the course for the future
development of Tyrol.
