As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing". 11 Yet again, in virtue of what is the richest element in the spirit of your Founder, I beg you to reflect on the deepest meaning of the "Contemplation for Obtaining Love", by which the apostolic man lives in the awareness of the reality that "ali gifts and benefits come from abo ve. My moderate ability comes from the Supreme Omnipotence on high, as do my sensé of justice, kindliness, charity, mercy and so on, like sunbeams from the sun or streams from their source...". 12 Such is the spirit of the true apostle who lives his mission in total de- pendence on God and in union with him. For this reason, in apostolic religious life, of which St. Ignatius under God's impulse was one of the great Founders, there should be no séparation between the interior life and the apostolate. These are the two essential and constitutive éléments of this life : they are inseparable, and they mutually influence and compenetrate each other. 11. Together with solidity of virtue, your Constitutions insist on a solidity and soundness of doctrine, such as is essential for an ef- ficacious apostolate. Consequently "The Jesuits were universally con- sidered to be a support for the doctrine and discipline of the whole Church. Bishops, priests and lay people used to look upon the Society as an authentic nourishment for the interior life". 13 The same should remain true in the future by means of that loyal fìdelity to the Magisterium of the Church, and in particular of the Roman Pontiff, to which you are in duty bound. 12. In fact, a special bond binds your Society to the Roman Pontiff, the Yicar of Christ on earth. II 563 in history, attached capital importance to this bond of love and service to the Roman Pontiff, so much so that they wished this "special vow" to be a characteristic élément of the Society. Whilst describing their own interior disposition, and what they expected of those who would later be admitted to the Professed Body of the Society, they wrote those words which are, and must remain engraved in the heart of every Jesuit worthy of the name : "For the sake of our greater dévotion in obédience to the Apostolic See, of greater abnégation of our own wills, and of surer direction from the Holy Spirit, in addition to that ordinary bond of the three vows, we are obliged by a special vow to carry out whatever the présent and future Roman Pontiffs may order which pertains to the progress of souls and the propagation of the faith; and to go without hésitation or excuse, as far as in us lies". 14 It is evident that here we are touching upon the essence of the Ignatian charism, and upon what lies at the very heart of your Order. And it is to this that you must always remain faithful. The Roman Pontiff to whom you are linked by this special vow is, in the words of the Second Vatican Council, "the Supreme Pastor of the Church". 15 As such he has a particular ministry of service to exercise for the good of the universal Church, and in which he will- ingly accepts your loving, devoted and time-tested collaboration. But the same Roman Pontiff also accepts the collaboration that you offer him in his role as head of the Episcopal College, 16 united with his brother Bishops in a collégial ministry of discernment and harmony, which, in virtue of a distincti ve charism, coordinates in docility to the Holy Spirit the other roles of ecclesial service. 17 For this reason you are likewise linked to the members of the College of Bishops by a bond that calis you to be united with them in pastoral charity and in close practical collaboration.
