the disinherited, the orphans, widows and refugees find fraternal love,
solìdarlty and support; and in which everyone is "eager to maintain
the unity of thè Spirit in the bond of peace". 7
Yes, dear Brothers, I look forward to being with you and your people,
in order to render homage to those who first brought you the Gospel
message and implanted thè Church among you. I earnestly desire to
celebrate together with you our unity under the sign of evangelization.
Ali this is directed to the glory of the Triune God, to whom each of us,
on that occasion, will be able tö address our prayer of exultation and
joy : "I will give you praise in the vast assembly ; in the mighty throng
I will praise you". 8
With God's help we shall praise him together —in
Nigeria ! And may the Möther of Jesus help it to be so.

Au moment où vous venez remettre les lettres qui vous accréditent
comme Ambassadeur de Tunisie près le Saint-Siège, vous avez tenu
à m'adresser quelques mots empreints d'une grande courtoisie et qui
définissent avec bonheur le sens de la haute mission que vous a confiée
Son Excellence Monsieur Habib Bourguiba, Président de la République
tunisienne.
Avec satisfaction je retrouve dans vos paroles l'expression du souci
constant du Président Bourguiba et du peuple tunisien de rechercher le
chemin du dialogue et de la compréhension. Parti-pris difficile, mais
combien exaltant! Votre pays, en raison de sa configuration géogra­
phique, n'a-t-il pas toujours été un creuset permettant aux valeurs ve­
nues du Moyen-Orient, comme aussi bien d'Europe, d'être assimilées par
le génie du peuple tunisien, pour les transmettre ensuite au Maghreb tout
entier? C'est bien là un, trait dominant de la civilisation tunisienne, et
qui constitue un gage précieux non seulement pour son avenir, mais
