Un’opera d’arte del valore di Antigone non può essere ridotta a strumen-
to di propaganda, anche se pacifista. Così l’archetipo struttura, secondo
Gerhard Joseph, The Years non meno che Three Guineas, il romanzo non
meno che lo scritto politico:
the feminist critique of Three Guineas is at least a subtext: it is
the Pargiter women who dream, who are the vessels of the
intense passion associated with the line from the Antigone,
while the men sink into the power structures they dominate –
the university, the law, the military – and congeal into the
fearful attitudes with which they bury alive both themselves
and a patriarchal society’s women. 41
Il personaggio di Antigone è, in Three Guineas, anche un esempio da se-
guire per distinguere le leggi dalla Legge 42 . “Things repeat themselves it
seems. Pictures and voices are the same today as they were 2,000 years
ago” 43 , ma anche le differenze devono essere tenute in considerazione.
L’analisi di Woolf apre certamente nuovi spazi di riflessione sulle inter-
pretazioni che non tengono conto delle motivazioni che Sofocle attribui-
