In the Heat of the Day i fantasmi del passato sono i morti che non rinun-
ciano ad abitare il presente, che si insinuano tra le macerie:
Most of all the dead, from mortuaries, from under cataracts of
rubble, made their anonymous presence – not as today’s dead
but as yesterday’s living – felt through London. Uncounted,
they continued to move in shoals through the city day,
pervading everything to be seen or heard or felt with their tornoff
senses, drawing on this tomorrow they had expected – for
death cannot be so sudden as all that. (HD, p. 91)
Ma mentre si assottiglia il muro che separa i vivi dai morti si riduce il
confine tra i viventi 45 . Per qualche tempo le barriere di classe sembrano
meno rigide, a fronte di una comune esperienza femminile di solidarietà
e di lavoro condiviso “We women are all in the same boat”, dice Louie a
Stella (HD, p. 237) 46 .
Ma questo non è che un passo nella maturazione femminile.
L’emancipazione più sofferta riguarda il superamento coraggioso del
confine tra privato e pubblico, particolarmente vincolante nella vita delle
donne. Durante i primi anni di guerra Stella si era rifugiata in una sfera
esclusivamente privata con il suo amante: “The lovers had for two years
