Anche l’appartamento di Stella si configura come luogo irreale 44 ,
che mette alla prova l’identità dei personaggi. L’angusto locale “did not
look like home; but it looked like something – possibly a story” (HD,
p. 47). È un luogo di esilio, oppure di prigionia:
The room lacked one more thing: apprehension of time. Inside
it the senses were cut off from hour and season; nothing spoke
but the clock. The day had gone from the moment Stella had
drawn down the fitted blinds and drawn across them the
deadening curtains: now nothing took its place. Every crack
was stopped; not a mote of darkness could enter – the room,
sealed up in its artificial light, remained exaggerated and
cerebral. (HD, p. 56)
Ecco dunque la “psychic London” di cui Bowen parla nella postfazione a
The Demon Lover. Ma, più di ogni altra cosa, la voce narrante sottolinea il
carattere letterario, dunque non realistico, di questa casa – “possibly a
story” – e dei personaggi, il cui “homecoming should have been one mo-
re chapter added to an august book” (HD, p. 55). Questa contaminazione
tra fiction e realtà culmina con la domanda di Bowen medesima
sull’affidabilità della propria memoria nel saggio “Out of a Book” (MT,
pp. 48-53): “Am I sure this is not a figure out of a book?” (MT, p. 53).
