sente connotato come estraneo. Il “cold intimate look he had found new
in women since his return” provoca, con il disordine della casa (“fun-
ctional anarchy”, CS, p. 610), disorientamento fisico nell’uomo. E la
domanda “Who would think that this was the same world?” (CS, p. 611)
assume una valenza universale. La metamorfosi non riguarda solo Lon-
dra, ma il mondo, che la guerra ha trasformato in territorio immaginario
e spettrale.
Questa perdita di realtà è un’emozione profonda nel racconto
“Mysterious Kôr”. Londra vi appare “a ghostly unbroken reflection”
(CS, p. 728), confondendosi con l’immagine di Kôr: entrambe sono città
immateriali, “like the moon’s capital”, abbandonate. La differenza è che
Kôr non ha una collocazione geografica (“Kôr’s not really anywhere”,
CS, p. 730), non ha storia (“with no history”, CS, p. 729), non ha mai avu-
to abitanti. Non ha la necessità di misurare il tempo: “in Kôr there is no
sort of other time” (CS, p. 731). Fuori del tempo, è una città mitica e solo
in quanto tale può durare:
This war shows we’ve by no means come to the end. If you can
blow whole places out of existence, you can blow whole places
into it. I don’t see why not. They say we can’t say what’s come
out since the bombing started. By the time we’ve come to the
end, Kôr may be the one city left: the abiding city. (ibid.)
La guerra distrugge, la guerra ricrea: distrugge la città reale, Londra, e
crea Kôr, risorsa dell’immaginazione.
