il giovane Brecht scrive che morire non è mai bello e più tardi dirà che la
morte è stupida 115 :
The saying that is sweet and proper to die for one’s fatherland
can be seen only as crass propaganda. It is always difficult to
give up one’s life whether in bed or on the field of battle,
particularly when, as so often, it is young men who die, young
men in the flower of their years. Only those whose own heads
are completely hollow could carry barefaced trickery so far as
to speak of a gentle jump through the doors of darkness. And
even they would speak that way only as long as they felt
nowhere near their own last hour on earth. But, if the grim
reaper were to approach them, then they would put their
shields on their backs and slink away like the emperor’s fat fool
at the Battle of Philippi, the fat fool who first dreamed up this
saying. 116
Il rapporto che Antigone immagina debba sussistere tra individuo e polis
non prevede dunque l’obbedienza acritica al potere, ma una ricerca atti-
va della libertà. Che non è solo individuale, tanto che la polis, rappresen-
tata dal coro di vecchi finisce con lo schierarsi apertamente dalla parte di
Antigone, riconoscendo in lei l’eredità dei riti antichi: “La sorella aveva
