Il sistema <strong>PCM</strong> fa sì che molte sorgenti di informazione,<br />
analogiche o digitali, possano essere concentrate in pochi<br />
canali digitali o multiplate in un unico flusso di bit, per la<br />
trasmissione tra DCE (Data Communication Equipment).<br />
Le trasmissioni tra DCE possono consistere di impulsi di tensione o di<br />
corrente su linee di trasmissione o, per lunghe distanze, gli impulsi <strong>PCM</strong><br />
posssono modulare una portante analogica ( con tecniche ASK, FSK, PSK,<br />
